FOREWORD
•
he Center for Philippine Studies is one of the nine area studies centers at the
Asian and Pacific Studies (SHAPS) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. It is the
institution in the United States offering Philippine studies degree programs comple-
and outreach activities. It encourages undergraduate and graduate students to •
studies as an area of concentration or a minor field while earning their degrees in the
I sciences or various professional schools.
Part of the mission of the Center is to promote research, especially among graduate students at
UHM, related to the Philippines, including Filipinos overseas. As an initial attempt to develop a catalogue
of the masters theses and dissertations that has been done at the University of Hawai'i over the past 70
years, the staff of the Center has undertaken this current project. Most of the theses and dissertations
•
are available in the Hawaiian section of the Hamilton Library at UHM. Microfiche copies are also
available at the circulation section of Hamilton Library.
This initial catalogue contains 304 entries, consisting of 154 masters theses and 150 PhD disserta-
tions. Approximately 38 percent of the studies (i.e., 115) were done by Filipino students. All in all, they
can be categorized into 43 subject areas ranging from agricultural and resource economics to biomedi-
cal sciences, from communication to zoology. The UH departments that have produced the most theses
and dissertations on topics related to the Philippines and overseas Filipinos include political science
(31 ), anthropology (30), psychology (27) and sociology (25).
According to our catalogue, the earliest graduate study dealing with Filipinos in Hawai'i was done by
Marjorie E. Babcock, a future UH professor. In 1927, her master's theses in psychology was entitled
"Some applications of clinical psychology in Hawai'i." The most recent graduate works as this catalogue
•
goes to print were done in 1997 by six students: Marco A. Bautista's master's theses in Agricultural and
Resource Economics entitled "An economic analysis of rice production in the Philippines (1970-1994)";
Rod Labrador's "Constructing and deconstructing 'Kaigorotan': examining attempts to formulate, articulate,
legitimate panethnicity in the Cordillera" for his master's theses in Asian Studies; Enrique Francia's master's
theses in English entitled "Rizal as anting-anting: subversion and indigenization in Philippine folk religion
narratives"; Macrina Abenoja's PhD dissertation "Immigration patterns, locale orientation, and life
•
satisfaction among elderly Filipinos on O'ahu"; Francisco A. Magno's PhD dissertation on "Crafting
conservation: social capital, and tenurial security in northern Philippines"; and Mary Margaret Gunn's PhD
dissertation entitled "The development of social networks; subsistence production and exchange between
the sixth and sixteenth centuries A.D. in the Tanjay region, Negros Oriental, the Philippines."
The scholars in this catalogue who would later join the academic, educational, governmental, and
•
policy-making ranks is also quite impressive. More than a dozen of the theses and dissertations
included in this collection have been published as books or as articles in academic journals.
As this is an initial attempt to provide a guide of the theses and dissertations produced at the
University of Hawai'i, we have not had the opportunity to annotate the entries listed. It is our hope that
this catalogue will encourage more students to undertake research on the Philippines and Filipinos
overseas. At the very least, it should make students of the Philippines and Filipinos more aware of
•
studies that have been done at the University of Hawai'i and, therefore, promote wider use of these
research materials.
We are grateful to the staff of the Center for Philippine Studies, especially Marissa Garcia and Amelia
Bello, both of whom are also writing their PhD dissertations on the Philippines, for doing the arduous
task of locating and compiling this guide. We are indebted to Clemen Montero for providing staff
•
support and Alice Mak, Philippine specialist, Asia Collection, Hamilton Library, for her suggestions.

i at Manoa in all fields of study that Include the Philippines and Filipinos as a subject of
omjpilers have attempted to make this an Inclusive list, so studies that contain any mention of
or Filipinos have been included. Coverage begins with the first thesis on the Philippines
927 and ends w~h December 1997.
This list cumulates entries from The Philippine and Filipinos in Hawai'i: A List of Disseltations and Master's
Theses Completed at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1934-1982, compiled by Shiro Saito for the
Philippine Studies Program in 1982; and selected c~ations from Asian Studies in Hawai'i, by Laurianne Chun,
published by the UHM School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies and Social Process in Hawai'i in 1997;
and from the dissertation and thesis lists compiled by the Hawaiian Collection, Hami~on Library, University
of Hawai'i at Manoa.
The citations are arranged by the department to which the dissertation or thesis was submitted. For
departments that have changed their names, both the original and the new names are included. An author
index follows the listing.
Each entry includes the author's name, title, degree, year of completion, pagination, and UHM Library call
number. Some departments state the specialty in which the degree was awarded; this information is also
included. Citations for degrees awarded in December 1997 may contain the abbreviation NA (not available).
These citations were not cataloged at the time of publication so information is incomplete. The UHM on-line
catalog should be consulted for current information.
All dissertations and theses are in the Hawaiian Collection, Hami~on Library, UHM. They are all available in
paper copy. Some are also available in microform copy.
Inquiries regarding borrowing dissertations and theses should be addressed to External Services Program,
Hamilton Library, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2550 The Mall, Honolulu, HI 96822 or directed by tele-
