Mrs. Jackson Tribute Interview
By: Breana O’ Brien, Jailene R. --Senior Editor, Sarah Ahmed

Newspaper club member Breana O'Brien spent several days interviewing the staff
at LLA about Mrs.Jackson. Mrs. Jackson was a reading teacher here who passed away
unexpectedly in the Schoharie limo crash on October 6th, 2018. O’ Brien interviewed:
Ms. Valainte, Mrs. Sleasman, Ms. Lasher, and Mrs. Weidman; teachers who knew her
well, and asked the following questions:

How well did you know Mrs. Jackson?

What was your favorite quality about her?
What did she like to talk about with you?
How can we honor her?

Here is a look inside some of the responses…

Ms. Valiante: “ I knew Mrs. Jackson very well. I met her last year and we ate lunch
together every day. She was always talking about her kids and her family. Something
we should do to honor her is to make Mrs. Jackson reading corner filled with her favorite
books”.

Mrs. Sleasman: “ I knew Mrs. Jackson pretty well; from teaching together at Lynch, our
classrooms were close together, sometimes I would stop by just to say “hi”. We talked
about our girls and were always sharing stories about them; we have daughters that
were born one day apart. Right now my daughter loves to read a book given to me by
Mrs. Jackson and I think there are many thoughtful ways to honor her. I love the bench,
but I think a Mrs. Jackson reading corner would be amazing”.

Ms. Lasher: “ I worked with Mrs. Jackson for over five years. She always had a beautiful
smile and knew a lot about computers too. We always talked about our students and
their ability to read and often about our children too- she was an excellent mom. To
honor her, we could do the bench or even a day full of reading to dedicate her.”

Mrs. Weidman: “ Mrs. Jackson and I were friends inside and outside of school. We
worked next door to one another and spent some time together outside of school. She
was always talking about her students, kids, and, family. To remember her, maybe we
can have a special reading bench.”

Mrs. Jackson was an amazing person; she was kind, funny, a good listener, and an
amazing mom, wife, daughter, sister, and teacher. May she rest in peace and thank you
to the LLA staff who agreed to be interviewed.

Crafting Paper Cranes
By: Angel S.

“Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1000 origami cranes, one's wish would come true. It
has also become a symbol of hope and h ealing during challenging times. As a result, it has become
popular to fold 1000 cranes (in Japanese, called “senbazuru”).”

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Two-year-old S adako Sasaki was living in Hiroshima when
the atom bomb was dropped. Sadly, ten years later, she was diagnosed with leukemia, also known as
"atom bomb disease." ... S adako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is based on a true story.

Throughout Asia, the crane is a symbol of happiness and eternal youth. In Japan, the crane is one
of the mystical or holy creatures (others include the dragon and the tortoise) and symbolizes good
fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years.

Humor
By: Anthony Serrano

Why is humor important in our life? Current research has indicated that humor, specifically
laughter, counteracts the devastations of stress on the body and immune system. So, it’s obvious
to me that a sense of humor would ease the stress of new situations. If you're feeling stressed
out, this article is for you. These are my top 6 favorite jokes of all time:

1. What is dangerous?
-Sneezing while having diarrhea!

2. What’s the worst thing about being lonely?

-Playing Frisbee.

3. Why did the physics teacher break up with the biology teacher?
-There was no chemistry

4. Today at the bank, an old lady asked me to help check her balance.
-So I pushed her over.

5. My boss told me to have a good day.. so I went home.

6. And the lord said unto John, "Come forth and you will receive eternal
life".
-John came fifth and won a toaster.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
By: Jailene Ramirez ; Senior Editor: Sarah Ahmed

Every year on Thanksgiving, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade travels down
6th avenue , 34th street and 59th street in New York City.
This parade, which debuted in the 1920’s, becomes better and better every year.
This year’s parade is going to be amazing! A -listers John Legend and Diana Ross,
and Martina Mcbride will be on the Christmas decorated float with Santa. The big
balloons featured will be Spongebob, the Dreamworks Trolls, the Hello Kitty, Felix the
Cat and more! Last year's parade, had amazing celebrities such as Flo Rida, Sabrina
Carpenter, Nicky Jam, and many more.
If you plan on attending, make sure you dress warm since the weather is
expected to be frigid! A few ways you can stay warm include: wearing many pairs of
socks, tights, layering shirts, wearing gloves and a warm coat. Bring a thermos of hot
chocolate!

Every year on thanksgiving I awake to the smell of the turkey cooking in the
oven, and rush out of bed because I know my mom is making something delicious for
breakfast! After everyone in the house is awake, we put it on the channel to watch the
parade and eat breakfast together. What do you do on Thanksgiving day?

Holiday traditions around the world
Researched by: Angel S
https://www.momondo.com/discover/article/christmas-traditions-around-the-world

Iceland- “In the 13 days leading up to Christmas,

13 tricksy troll-like characters come out to play in
Iceland. The Yule Lads (jólasveinarnir or jólasveinar
in Icelandic) visit the children across the country
over the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. For each
night of Yuletide, children place their best shoes by the
window and a different Yule Lad visits leaving gifts for
nice girls and boys and rotting potatoes for the naughty ones. Clad in traditional
Icelandic costume, these fellas are pretty mischievous. Visit Iceland this Christmas and
catch them all!”

Columbia- “Little Candles’ Day (Día de las Velitas) marks the start of the
Christmas season across Colombia. In honour of the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate
Conception, people place candles and paper lanterns in their windows, balconies and
front yards. The tradition of candles has grown, and now entire towns and cities across
the country are lit up with elaborate displays. Some of the best are found in Quimbaya,
where neighbourhoods compete to see who can create the most impressive
arrangement.”

Toronto- “In wintry, wonderful Toronto the annual

Cavalcade of Lights marks the official start to the holiday
season. The first Cavalcade took place in 1967 to show off
Toronto’s newly constructed City Hall and Nathan Phillips
Square. The Square and Christmas tree are illuminated by
more than 300,000 energy-efficient LED lights that shine from
dusk until 11 pm until the New Year. On top of that, you’ll get
to witness spectacular fireworks shows and engage in some outdoor ice skating.”

The beauty of the season
By Isabella Rivera and Cheyanne DeRose

Snow falls onto the rooftops of warmed family homes

Through the windows, lights on trees produce a soft warm glow.
A kind time for merry and jolly with holly strung up like big, proud,
bows.
Children run from house to house singing with voices of angels
Proud on top of each child's head lies a beautiful, glee filled, halo.
Happiness is a gift that keeps on giving,
Being passed from person to person throughout the season.
A time for wonder, a time for cheer,
For carolling aloud for all to hear!
