We Must Raise Minimum Wage

Just another mother from North Carolina making a minimum wage of seven dollars and

twenty-five cent an hour. She was a single mother with three kids. She was struggling to pay

bills and provide for her family. The mother had to pay for childcare, buy food, and have

transportation. This story is like many of the stories people have heard before. Minimum wage is

defined as the lowest wage permitted by the law. Currently, the minimum wage in North

Carolina is seven dollars and twenty-five cent an hour​. Minimum wage should be raised

because the cost of living has increased, it would decrease the number of people on

government assistance and the work everyone puts into the job may not amount to what

they’re earning.

The government should raise the minimum wage because of the cost of living. According

to the video, a new york mother had an income of every two weeks (Sahadi). The New York

mother (Safiyya Cotton ) was getting snap two hundred and sixteen dollars every month. she had

childcare which was one hundred and forty dollars every week. She was on housing assistance

for one hundred and twenty-five dollars every month. The Minimum wage would only climb

seventy cent a year until it reaches twelve dollars and fifty cent by 2020 (Sahadi) The longer we

wait for minimum wage to increase it would cause more debt for people cause the cost of living

increases year by year. The minimum wage pay rate is not enough for our single mothers

because they are struggling to provide for the family.

The government should raise the minimum wage because of the cost of living. Closer

inspection it seems the institute is using highest estimated values for food, childcare, healthcare,

transportation (Craver). The institute was the highest value estimated for food, childcare,
healthcare, transportation. “ The intended purpose of minimum wage is to serve as protection of

living standards” (Craver). Minimum wage is protecting their finances. The minimum wage is

trying to help protect their finances but it’s also breaking the workers and minimum wage

workers are stressing to provide for families.

The government should raise the minimum wage because of the cost of living. Minimum

wage workers earn less than they need to make ends meet (Imbert). The minimum wage workers

are not making enough to pay bills on time or support their needs in life. “Create jobs so the that

you’re making more than minimum wage” (Imbert). Apply or create your own business so you

will not receive seven dollars and twenty-five cent an hour such as hairdresser, babysitting, you

wouldn’t have to worry about making ends. Minimum wage workers could invest in a business

to make more than seven dollars and twenty-five cent an hour, they can have more money on the

side to save and support their family.

 This graph shows “Percent of people in poverty” how the numbers increased in just a

couple of years. In 2008 the percent of people in poverty was at a low percentage. In 2009 the

percentage with up 2 more. In 2010 the percentage went up more. Every year the percentage up

one or two.

The government should raise minimum pay because the work employees put into a job

don’t amount the pay. The change made low-income workers worse off not better because it

forces employers to cut back on hiring and hours to afford to pay high wages (Ingraham).

Workers are working hard to get more money but they are cutting hours. “You might think, well

this going benefit a lot of workers, and consumers are going to pay a little more but, it’s not

going to backfire”(Ingraham). Rising the prices so some employees can get the amount of money
they deserve. All the hard work the Employees put into the job is not worth it because it’s not a

big amount just little to survive.

The government should raise the minimum pay because the work employees put into a

job don’t amount the pay. The federal minimum wage provides compensated increase at a

different rate than inflation increase many workers behind in economically(Dixon). They are

putting minimum wage workers in debt. “Good business leaders want their employees to have a

decent life and want their employees to make enough money to afford to live”(Dixon).

Everybody would be able to live a good life if the minimum wage made enough money. Low

minimum wage is putting themselves in debt, everybody gets paid more than seven dollars and

twenty-five cent an hour everything would be perfect.

The government should raise minimum pay because the work employees put into a job

don’t amount the pay. The federal minimum wage has been seven dollars and twenty-five cent an

hour. For tipped workers two dollars and thirteen cents, employers are expected to make up the

difference if it doesn’t bring them to minimum pay(Pearlberg and Reyes). The amount of work

tipped workers do is not adding up for the pay. “Full-service restaurant workers saw their

average take-home pay go up to 6.4 percent”(Pearlberg and Reyes). As a result, the minimum

wage workers pay increased but still didn’t make a difference. If an employee tip combined with

the employer’s cash wage of at two dollars and thirteen cents an hour do not equal minimum

hourly wage, The employer must make the difference.

The government should raise minimum pay because it would decrease government

assistance. Raising minimum pay to ten dollars and ten cents would reduce government

expenditures on current income support by programs by 7.6 million(Jacobson). if the minimum

wage increase, it would decrease government assistance. Changing the Calculation to a minimum

wage could make a big difference(Jacobson). Making minimum wage higher would help the

people in economically and government. Increasing the minimum wage would reduce the

government assistance.

The government should raise minimum pay because it would decrease government

assistance. Raising wage for low wage workers deciles who earn up to twelve dollars and sixteen

cents per hour would ambiguously reduce net spending on public assistance(Cooper). The more

you make at a job the less help you get from government assistance. Raising the federal

minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour as 2020 would entail increasing that significantly above

the typical pattern with federal minimum wage(Cooper). By 2020 everybody would be making

fifteen an hour, that will decrease government assistance and help them economically. Raising

the pay would be best for everyone in the economically and the government, it would reduce

spending money for government assistance.

The government should raise minimum pay because it would decrease government

assistance. Raising the minimum pay to twelve dollars an hour by 2020 would reduce

means-tested public assistance(Cooper). The government could save a lot of money by raising

the minimum wage, we can reduce government assistance.”Workers in public administration

have the lowest rate utilization with only sixteen percent of workers receiving benefits”(Cooper).

Changing the minimum wage from seven dollars and twenty-five cent to twelve dollars would be

a better way for others to save money and live better because most have the lowest rate. By 2020

government assistance should reduce if the minimum wage worker goes up to twelve or fifteen

dollars an hour, would help the government and families.

 Even though some people believe the government should raise the minimum wage, others

don’t believe it. If the government raise the minimum wage it would be less help from the

government such as WIC, housing, snap. WIC helps the young parents by getting milk and fruits

for babies. Housing helps single and young parents with a high paying rent. Snap helps families

with food in the house so they can eat. What this argument fails to consider is the higher

minimum wage the less of government assistance. For an example, a minimum wage worker is

making seven dollars and twenty-five cent an hour living off of the snap, childcare, and housing

assistance. A doctor is getting paid ninety dollars an hour, with no help from the government. If

the government raise the pay it could help others live better without the government assistance.

The government should raise the minimum wage because it can help others on the cost of

living such as bill and providing for families. Helping employees get the pay they deserve.

Decreasing the number of people on on government assistance. Why is this topic important to

me? This topic is important to me because most of everybody I know is living off government

assistance and stressing to make sure the family can make through the month of making the low

paying wage. Others are not getting the pay they deserve for to be working as hard as they do

hard to be getting paid seven dollars and twenty-five cent an hour. Most of all the cost of living

is high being a single parent making a low paying job. Why should our society be concerned

about it? The society should be concerned because it could one their family members making a

low wage and trying to get survive with the little amount of pay. Our society should want

everybody to be living good.
