F
or some brides-to-be, just the mere thought of trying on gowns creates anxiety.
Concerns about her perceived imperfections, such as weight, height, or shape,
can sabotage any bride’s gown-shopping experience.
“Let’s be honest, almost every woman has at least one body feature she
doesn’t like,” says Deryn Donovan, owner of Penny Jane Bridal. “The good news--is that
many designers” have tackled this dilemma, “by offering custom sizing to actually make
the dress to bride’s specific measurements.” In other words, you don’t need supermodel
measurements to look fabulous on your wedding day.

Esther Viola Kurtz knew that most
gowns would be too baggy across her
chest. She also knew that halter-neck
styles look good on her small frame, and
she preferred an open back that showed
off her toned shoulders. Most important-
ly, her dress needed to incorporate fabric
from an heirloom 1930s wedding dress
into the final design. Ultimately, she felt
“incredibly lucky to have Morgana create
my dream dress!” It fit her body flaw-
lessly, was comfortable, and impeccably
matched Esther’s unique personal style.
“Brides I work with have problems with
the bust fitting but not the waist or vice
versa,” says Morgana. “Torso lengths and
bust-to-waist ratios can be tricky if you’re
not having something custom made.”
“Most women do not fit to an exact
size on our size chart,” states Niki Adams,
director of Bridal Accounts at Alexandra
Grecco. “This is why we offer split sizing
for all of our gowns. Brides can order a dif-
ferent size for the bodice and skirt, making
the initial fit much closer to her true size
and minimizing alterations.” Other options
include adding boning for structure and
support, raising necklines and backlines.
Know that bridal sizes run differently,
meaning the size on your gown won’t
typically match your jeans size. “And that’s
fine!” assures Niki. “The goal is to find a
gown that makes you feel beautiful. There
are numerous style options available, and
something perfect for everyone.”

18 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

On the last day of summer vacation in 2008, before returning to Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island for her senior year, Stephanie
spent some time with her two best friends from high school who worked at Roche Bros. They asked their co-worker, Alvin, to come
along, and they all went to Legacy Place in Dedham. Stephanie and Alvin didn’t interact much at first, but when they stopped to
take a picture on the big L.L. Bean boot, they began to talk and ended up hitting it off. Alvin found Stephanie on Facebook and sent
her a message, asking her for her number. They remained friends while Stephanie finished college, and they started dating in 2012.
Stephanie remembered, “I actually thought he liked my friend back in the day, but it turned out he liked me!”

“Because Butternut Farm
has such beautiful
greenery, they kept the
ceremony décor simple
with a flower archway that
matched the bouquets
and centerpieces.”

On a trip to England to visit one of Stephanie’s

cousins in 2017, the couple became engaged.
While they were on a family outing to Brighton
Pier, Stephanie’s cousin Angela said that her
daughter, Siena, had something to tell everyone,
but first, they all needed to be blindfolded. When
Angela gave them the cue to take off their blind-
folds, there was Alvin down on one knee. “I was
so shocked and happy. I honestly thought my
cousin was pregnant again and she was doing a
gender reveal of some sort,” said Stephanie. Alvin
devised the ring box out of an L.L. Bean boot—
he got a keychain and put the ring in there and
proposed with that. It was an extra sweet touch,
bringing them back to when they first met.

20 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

Alvin and Stephanie took a year and a half to plan the wedding, getting both families involved in a lot of the DIY. They looked
at a lot of venues, but when Stephanie saw Butternut Farm on The Knot website, she knew they had to check it out. Once they
visited, they realized that this venue, with its beautiful outdoor green space and ballroom, was just what they wanted. “Erin and
Hope were so great to work with—so accommodating and helpful and always willing to answer questions.” Butternut offers a vendor
inclusive package (#1ClickWeddingDone) to make the planning easier. We trusted their experience with the vendors and knew we
were getting the best.

www.bridegroommag.com 21
The color palette was Rustic Pink, and the décor had
lots of wood accents with burlap and lace. Pink has
always been Stephanie’s favorite color, and the hue
complemented the wood accents nicely. Since Alvin
and Stephanie are both foodies, they wanted to incor-
porate cuisine from both of their cultures; Alvin is from
Albania, and Stephanie’s family is Italian-American. A
small set of oil and vinegar cruets made the perfect fa-
vor for everyone. There were also bonbonieres (boxes
containing candy) with limoncello-flavored almonds.
Limoncello is a staple holiday after-dinner drink in
Stephanie’s family, so it was only fitting to include it
somehow.
For the centerpieces, they decorated mason jars
with burlap and lace around the middle and a pink rib-
bon around the top before handing the jars off to the
florist who added soft pink roses and baby’s breath.
The centerpieces alternated between the flower jars
and a glass jar full of twinkly lights.
Because Butternut Farm has such beautiful green-
ery, they kept the ceremony décor simple with a flower
archway that matched the bouquets and centerpieces.
Frugal Flowers created bouquets for the bridesmaids
with light pink roses and baby’s breath wrapped with
burlap. The bride’s bouquet was the same, but with a
touch of purple. Alvin made the wood board for the
seating chart, then they incorporated more twine and
burlap, and strung it onto the wood board.
The food was chosen to cater to a wide range of
tastes. For cocktail hour, there was a stationary antipas-
to table and Mediterranean platters to represent both
of their cultures. Dinner was a choice of maple-glazed
salmon or prime rib, and the vegetarian choice was
butternut squash raviolis. The white cake from Mon-
tilio’s was brushed with Grand Marnier and filled with
whipped strawberry creme. The cake decoration was
simple and elegant and, of course, pink, with ruffled
edges. There was a cake topper of the bride pulling
the groom—a comic touch in honor of the couple’s
shared sense of humor. They also happen to both love
s’mores, so they had Montilio’s make them s’more jars.
Around each jar it said S’more Lovin’. Stephanie was
grateful for the bakery’s flexibility, gushing, “These jars
were custom, and they had no problem doing them.
Both the cake and the jars came out great—just the
way we imagined—and it all tasted delicious as well.”
When Stephanie went looking for a dress, she want-
ed sleeves and lace, but not flower lace, and she want-
ed it to be form fitting. Jessica at Camila’s in Arlington
picked out five dresses of that description, and Stepha-
nie like all five of them, but she was able to narrow it
down to one. “I picked my dress because It suited me.
It was exactly my style with lace, straps, and a low back.”

22 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

Stephanie knew she wanted her bridesmaids to have dresses with a lace top to complement her dress, but the exact shade of pink
was difficult to match. They found what they were looking for at David’s Bridal.
The groom and his attendants went to Men’s Warehouse and got navy suits. The groomsmen wore pink ties and pocket squares
and Alvin wore a white tie with a pink pocket square.
Scott Arrington from Murray Hill Talent provided the entertainment. “He did a great job and worked with us on all of our requests.”
The couple surprised their guests by hiring Albanian dancers to start off the reception. When the DJ announced the dancers and
they came out on the dance floor, Stephanie and Alvin enjoyed seeing everyone’s surprised expressions. “It was a great way to start
off the night because it got everyone ready to dance and brought in Alvin’s culture.” And because Stephanie has an obsession with
donuts, Alvin made a donut wall with donuts from Linda’s Donuts in Belmont, MA, which, naturally, was a big hit with the guests.
Stephanie advises future brides and grooms to “enjoy the process and all of the hard work you put into it because the day
goes by fast!”

cooking, heating, and lighting. Today, couples getting married are using this magical
force to light up their weddings in fireplaces and firepits. Here are some suggestions

Michelle Leroux and Alexander Yazdi were mar-
ried on October 6, 2018, at Harrington Farm in
Princeton, MA.
Although the two went to high school together,
Michelle and Alex met again in May 2016, when
Michelle got a part-time job as a bartender at
Amici Trattoria. Alex trained Michelle on the bar
and their chemistry was immediately apparent to
everyone around them. Customers, coworkers—
even Michelle’s Mom—all knew there was a future
in store for these two. After months of denying
what everyone else already knew, the two finally
gave in to fate, went on their first date, and never
looked back. Although Michelle and Alex had ini-
tially refused to believe they were anything more
than best friends, the foundation of their strong
relationship is a friendship, and they wouldn’t
have it any other way. Since the two fell in love
during fall, and bonded over their love for all
things pumpkin spice, it seemed only fitting they
should have an autumn wedding.

www.bridegroommag.com 31
“After overcoming an overwhelming sense of joy, excitement, and a little bit of (a lot of) anxiety,” Alex begins, “I worked up the
courage to pay a visit to Michelle’s parents. We hugged, we laughed, and we cried. It’s like they knew why I was there.” Alex received
the blessing he came for, as well as a ring that had belonged to Michelle’s grandmother. Alex continues, “Now, I’d love to sit here
and tell you I orchestrated some elaborate and romantic proposal, but I’d be lying. Of course, I envisioned one, and even played it
out hundreds of times in my head. When I returned home from meeting with her parents, I saw my future wife standing in front of
the mirror getting ready for us to go out. I saw her standing there in her bathrobe, hair halfway done, and Crest White Strips freshly
applied. I saw the most beautiful girl I had ever seen in my entire life standing there before me, and that’s when instinct took over.”

32 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

Michelle ripped off the white strips off and,
with sparkling white teeth, she said “yes.” “What
I love most about Alex is how much he makes
me laugh, and the night he proposed was no
exception!”
The couple planned their wedding for about
17 months (engaged in May, married the follow-
ing October).
Their favorite memory during the planning
process was visiting the venue for the first time
and knowing immediately that it was the place
they wanted to be married. Going back for vari-
ous meetings and the food tasting event with
both sets of parents made it even more excit-
ing and real. “Plus the food is delicious,” Michelle
explained.

www.bridegroommag.com 33
Michelle and Alex chose Harrington Farm because they wanted a rustic
yet formal venue. They knew they wanted to get married outside, but it
was also important for there to be a beautiful indoor space to have the
ceremony in case of inclement weather. In addition to the patio where
the ceremony ultimately took place, Harrington Farm also has a beautiful
stone fireplace that they fell in love with, so they knew that either option
would be perfect. It didn’t hurt that they had heard wonderful things, par-
ticularly about the amazing food.
The theme was Fall in Love, since autumn is their favorite season, and
they also started dating in the fall. They expressed their shared love of
pumpkin spice everything, by incorporating pumpkins in the decor and
in the centerpieces, which were white pumpkins with floral arrangements
inside. The wedding cake was a delicious pumpkin spice semi-naked cake
from the Bean Counter. There were mini white pumpkins placed through-
out the room as well. Keeping up with the autumnal theme, guests were
offered apple cider donuts from Tougas Farm as a late-night snack—a big
hit, especially for the donut-loving flower girl and ring bearer. The signature
drink was spiked hot apple cider. Welcome bags at the hotel included
pumpkin spice granola bars, apples, and homemade apple pumpkin muf-
fins made by the mother of the groom.

Saying Thank You

What Couples Need to Know Today
by Connie Jeske Crane

It’s not surprising that, with lots of couples embracing a more casual wedding vibe,
there’s some confusion out there about traditional etiquette, including etiquette about
thank you cards.
According to wedding industry insiders, couples today have lots of questions ranging from,
“Do I need to send thank you cards?” and “Can’t I just email people?” to fuzziness about
timelines: “I can wait a year to send out my thank you notes, right?”

36 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

So in today’s digital world, how should couples convey their heartfelt thanks to their
guests? It seems like a great time to revisit etiquette for this time-honored tradition.
Here’s what we learned:

Saying Thank You Is Still Important

Even if you’ve heard anecdotal reports of
couples omitting this step, the first thing
to know is thank you cards are still a must
– at least according to leading etiquette
sources such as the Emily Post Institute.
Forgoing thank you cards is not a great
idea, agrees Joe Rogers, founder of Con-
tagious Events (www.contagiousevents.
net) in Boston. “It’s not something that
we are encouraging, and I hope I can say
that it’s not something that applies to our
clients.”
Beyond that, Rogers says he’s also
advising his clients to buck the trend to-
wards late responses. “There seems to be
a myth that has been growing in popular-
ity, that couples have a full year to send
thank you cards according to etiquette,
and that’s not the case.” The guideline
advised by Rogers (and the Emily Post
Institute) is to send your cards out within
three months of your wedding.

42 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

Steve and I met the day after I moved home from college. We were working together at a local restaurant. We quickly became
friends and started dating shortly after.
Steve proposed on our five-year anniversary of dating. We were staying overnight in Newport to celebrate, and he surprised me
by cancelling the hotel reservations I had and upgrading our accommodations to Hotel Viking. I thought he was joking at first when
we pulled into the driveway; the place was so gorgeous. He planned to propose on the roof deck, but he was afraid I would notice
the box in his pocket, so he waited until we got back to our room to change for dinner. We went to dinner after the proposal and I
was so excited that I didn’t even realize I was holding the menu upside down.

www.bridegroommag.com 43
We started planning almost immediately and
picked a date two years away. We only went to
see one venue—Bloom Meadows. At the time, it
was still in the construction phase, and we made
our decision based on blue prints and renderings.
As an exhibit designer, my clients trust my render-
ings and drawings to make decisions from, so I
figured I could do the same. We live in Central
Mass and have family and friends from Vermont
and New York. Bloom Meadows was the perfect
middle point for everyone to travel to and the
perfect venue for the vision we had of our wed-
ding. It’s charming and intimate and nestled on a
gorgeous piece of land in the Berkshires.

“Bloom Meadows is
charming and intimate
and nestled on a
gorgeous piece of land
in the Berkshires.”

Being a designer, I was hands on with a lot of

the details. I designed every piece of my invitation
suite and all the day-of signage and stationery.
I worked with the Laughing Owl Press in Kane,
Pennsylvania, to create letterpress invitations and
RSVP cards. I went with a clean black font and
white paper. We wrapped the invitations in vel-
lum and tied them with black hemp. Elevation3d,
the company I work for, was kind enough to pro-
duce custom acrylic table numbers, signage, and
a seating chart. I am Cuban and my husband is
Greek, so we gave a nod to our cultures by la-
beling certain elements in Spanish, Greek, and
English.
We chose the Hudson Cake Studio in Hudson
Valley, New York, to make the cake. With our busy
schedules, we couldn’t make it out there for a
tasting so Kerri, the owner, sent us mason jars
filled with cake samples. She was so accommo-
dating and great to work with.
Steve picked up his tuxedo a few days be-
fore the wedding, and when he went to try it
on, one sleeve was significantly longer than the
other. We’re convinced they tailored the same
sleeve twice!
www.bridegroommag.com 45
We were able to get into the venue a couple days before the wedding, so we could assemble the tablescapes and interior décor. We used vases, table
runners, and brass candlesticks to create a unique and edgy bohemian look. We did our best to use flowers and decorations that would last past the
wedding day. We incorporated the wedding favors into the the place settings and used them as place cards. The table florals were made up of air plants,
pampas grass, and ivory roses in contemporary bud vases.
I knew I wouldn’t have time to do everything myself so, for personal flowers and ceremony décor, I worked with Melissa from Poppytree Floral Designs
in West Sand Lake, New York, and Weathered Wood in Troy, New York. We went back and forth with inspiration boards and sketches to create the perfect
mix of florals and natural elements. Melissa truly brought those ideas to life. We went with a limited color palette for the event, so our bouquets were made
up of mostly natural elements like pheasant feathers, pampas grass, and cotton stems. We added a giant ivory king protea to my bouquet. These elements
carried over to the ceremony backdrop, which was a circular weathered wood structure, and the adornment for our Angel Chair—our way of remembering
family members who are no longer with us.

Ship of Dreams:
Planning Your Ultimate Honeymoon Cruise
by Cindy Papish Gerber

Why should couples consider taking a honeymoon cruise? “There are many
reasons,” offers Ted Goulet, an accredited cruise counselor with Cruise Planners in
Worcester, MA. “Cruises can be all-inclusive, and you see and do a lot that otherwise
might prove costly.” Yet the most compelling reason, is the lure of “exotic
and romantic ports of call.”

48 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

With so many itineraries, cruise lines,
and ships to choose from, landlocked
couples may be mystified about where
and when to set sail. In Goulet’s experi-
ence, the advantages of “working with a
professional to find the best fit and at the
right price” far outweighs searching for
discount cruises that won’t offer what you
want.
During their interview process with
Cruise Planners, Josh and Jess Wren ex-
pressed a wish to see different parts of
Europe—“something exciting that nei-
ther had done or gone to before,” Gou-
let recalls. Following his suggestion, they
booked an Avalon Waterways river
cruise along the Danube. This amazing
honeymoon covered all of what they
were looking for, including “a nice roman-
tic stopover to end their honeymoon in
Jess and Josh Wren
Paris.”
River cruises and boutique-style ships
“are taking the large cruise ship experi-
ence and SLOWING IT DOWN,” em-
phasizes Katie Gerhard, director of sales
for Eastern USA and Eastern Canada
Azamara Club Cruises. “The most im-
portant part of small-ship cruising is ex-
periencing destinations while connecting
on a local cultural level. We bring local en-
tertainment onboard, because we spend
more time (including overnights) in ports.
You never wait in a line; the ships pull into
city centers versus being out of town at a
shipyard. The service is intimate because
the crew knows your likes and dislikes.”
One of Gerhard’s favorite cruises goes
from “Singapore to Mumbai, through
Southeast Asia, crossing the Bay of Ben-
gal.” She recently accompanied twelve
independent honeymoon couples on a
ten-night luxury voyage from Barcelona to
Athens. “They chose this inclusive cruise

Galapagos, Malta, Tahiti, and Bali on smaller luxury ships with “fewer families onboard and younger and more
active guests.” For those interested in state-of-the-art entertainment and more dining choices, Panzer contin-
ues, “then larger ships are going to be a better fit.”
A cruise “balances the opportunity to see many different destinations,” while relaxing (or staying active)
at sea,” Panzer says. “You don’t have to worry about unpacking and packing; you know upfront exactly how
much the cruise will cost …so there are no surprises. It’s worry-free travel.”
Most importantly, the Celebrity Cruises press center advises couples “to keep the destination in mind.
Celebrity Cruises offers 300 different destinations on all seven continents. There’s a plethora of options to
choose from. The real question one should ask is, What type of adventure am I looking for? It really comes

If you’ve ever filled a basket with fresh blueberries in Maine or picked an apple

when enjoying local produce.

Boxboro Regency Hotel is not your typical New
England wedding venue. It’s a distinctly different,
warm and fun place to celebrate a momentous occa-

provides a light and breezy outdoorsy feel, even on
the coldest of winter days.

By day, the sun dramatically streams
into the area, and at night, the courtyard is
illuminated by hundreds of twinkle lights
that lend more than a bit of romance to
the room. The space seats up to 250
people for formal plated dinners or a buf-

staircase flanked by beautiful indoor wa-

a giant gazebo that does double duty as
a place for wedding ceremonies; and a
fabulous dance floor. There’s also the Pa-

the Courtyard as well.
“In the center of this unique property is
a giant atrium, an enclosure we call the
Courtyard,” said Carlee Magliozzi, the Box-
boro Regency’s wedding specialist. “When
couples and guests walk into our court-
yard, it’s truly unexpected. It’s a space that
sells itself, because it’s so different from
any other event setting around, and when
weddings are in full swing, the happy cou-

the hotel. Although it’s large in size, with
balconies up above, it’s also an intimate
space surrounded by lush plants that offer

When it comes to grooms, style makers have a pretty clear message for 2019:
Have fun! With options ranging from showstopper colors to jubilant patterns and textures,
some observers are calling this the most exciting time ever for men’s wedding fashion.

To get a better sense of the trends, we talked to Stephanie the arrival of wedding “suits that are big, bold, and beautiful,”

Muñoz is happy to report that one of her
personal style favorites is trending for
2019: the three-piece suit. “This is a way
for grooms to set themselves apart from
their groomsmen and guests. They’re
able to look dapper with their three-

they’re still looking dressed up; they still

3. Contemporary Tailoring
For the younger demographic especially, tailoring
trends continue to embrace a slimmer profile
and shorter pant hems. As Muñoz explains,
“Younger men are the ones who will wear a
semi-break in the length of their pants to show a
little bit of sock, as opposed to the classic tradi-

Younger grooms are also wearing the skinnier

ou know those amazing love stories that couples share, where they tell you how one
simple yet crucially important occurrence led to another whole series of events that
dramatically hinged on timing and luck? As the story goes on, so does the synergy,
and the stars align magically. Passion with a dash of blind faith come together to create
an inspiring fairy tale that is destined to last a lifetime. You’ve heard stories like that, right?
Well, that’s pretty much what happened when newlyweds Babe and Christina
Predella discovered Oakholm Farm, a centuries-old working blueberry, raspberry,
and pick-your-own Christmas tree farm in Brookfield, Massachusetts.

68 Winter 2019 BRIDE&GROOM

Owned and operated by the Jeppson’s,
a prominent local family, for more than
90 years, the farm had seen better days
when Babe and Christina stumbled upon
it. But through the disrepair, this young
couple saw its potential, felt its positive
energy, and with laser-like focus, they had
a crystal clear vision for what their lives
could be like, living there and hosting
weddings and special events on a newly
renovated Oakholm Farm.
You see, this love story is about a place.
A romantic spot full of authenticity, natural
beauty, and charm. It’s a place that can be
a part of your love story, too!
Oakholm Farm is considered by many
to be the gem of Brookfield, a rural com-
munity located just six miles from Stur-
bridge, Massachusetts. The farm is situ-
ated on 115 acres of picture-perfect land
with 500 square feet of beautiful lake
frontage on Lake Quaboag, where bald
eagles are often spotted. The propri-
etors have managed to use the historic
elements of the farm to present classic
vignettes and features in a stylish and
timely way, which makes for jaw-dropping
photo opportunities all over the property.
In a nod to the life the farm once knew,
there are lots of Jeppson family touches,
paying homage to the previous owners
and the happy lives they lived here.
“The farm does all the work. I don’t ever
have to sell it,” said Christina Predella, co-
owner and events coordinator. “We’ve
been given this beautiful centuries-old
canvas that reminds me of a historic Eu-

ropean farm. Our mission is to take this
land and its structures, and most impor-
tantly, keep it as a place of love respect,
fun, celebration, peace, and relaxation.
It’s a place for nourishment of the soul
and a place where families can come to-
gether to create lifelong memories.”
Christina was previously a teacher, and
in recent years, had become a success-
ful wedding coordinator for another local
farm. Her husband owns his own land-
scaping company, and his talents are ap-
parent across the property. Together with

their families, the Predellas have created
a truly unique experience here.
First-time visitors to Oakholm Farm usu-
ally gather at the Big House, as it is called.
This is not like any farmhouse you’ve seen
before; it’s an immaculate and stately six-
bedroom slate-roofed manse, tastefully
renovated inside and covered in lovely ivy
outside and surrounded by perennial gar-
dens. It’s available to brides and grooms
for their wedding weekend, and it comes
complete with a courtyard, elegantly dec-
orated rooms, and grand entertainment
spaces, perfect for getting ready for the
ceremony or continuing the celebration

after the reception.
A short stroll from the Big House takes
you by the lake, where you’ll find a guest
cottage with a pool. This spot is just right
for showers and smaller events, and it
also serves as a bridal party meet-up spot
or the perfect place for the groom and his
groomsmen to get ready for the big day.
It’s a lovely open-concept cottage with a
living room, bathroom, kitchen, and relax-
ing porch. Just behind the cottage is the
hayfield where the magic happens. This is
where the 50-x-90-foot tent goes, which
seats up to 200 guests comfortably. There
is also the option of renting an alternative
tent that allows for up to 300 guests with
a dance floor and bar.

vendors from a list of tried-and-true lo-
cal caterers, bakers, and more, and some
couples have even had their reception ca-
tered by food trucks. Did we mention that
Oakholm Farm also serves as a brewery?
In the near future, it will be open to the
public in one of the antique barns on the
property, but currently, brides and grooms
can have a brew truck pull up outside the
tent at their reception. They are currently
brewing 15 recipes of beer and ale on the
premises, and couples can select 12 va-
rieties to have on tap at their reception.
It’s truly an amazing and delicious option,
uncommon to most wedding venues.

for history, and a finger on the pulse of
today’s trends, the owners of this unique

ceptional wedding and events venue;
they’re creating an unmatched experi-

Oakholm Farm should be at the top of
your list!

i f you just got engaged and you’re nervous about trying to navigate the tricky world of wedding
planning, consider this: Maybe you don’t have to. Chrissie Sue of Events by Chrissie Sue, LLC can help
you with everything from theme conceptualization, colors, and centerpieces to coordinating all aspects
of your wedding with vendors as a day-of director. Whatever your needs, Chrissie Sue has more than a
decade of experience and a true passion for what she does. Here’s the scoop on her business:

theme conceptualization and working as a day-of director. With
this package, I initially work with clients on their overall concept
and event theme, and I am their point person on the day of
their wedding. I put together a portfolio with events for the day
including time lines and checklists, acting as liaison between
vendors so that the couple can enjoy themselves, knowing that
things are being taken care of. My goal is to reduce stress,
executing everything according to my clients’ vision. The third
package is the Day of Wedding and Event Direction, which is
perfect if clients have done all the planning themselves but
need a professional to organize and execute all their hard work.

“I develop fabulous relationships with

each of my clients, while creating
and executing lifelong unforgettable
experiences and getting to bring
their visions to life.”

q:
What makes your company stand out among other event-
planning companies?
q:
Tell me a bit about the history behind Events By Chrissie a:
The biggest difference is that you’re working with me,
Sue, LLC. Chrissie Sue! I’m uniquely passionate in all aspects of my job.
a:
I began my career in the events and hospitality industry
14 years ago and spent the last seven and a half years working
for Colwen Hotels, most recently as the Director of Catering
for the Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel and the Hilton
Garden Inn at Patriot Place in Foxborough, MA. I loved my ten-
ure there, but I’ve recently realized that I want a different work/
life balance. After being encouraged by so many, I decided to
branch out on my own to expand my portfolio. I’m now able
to continue doing what I love while maintaining the flexibility I
was searching for.

q:
What kinds of services do you offer brides and grooms?
a: I’ve developed relationships with many reputable ven-
dors, including DJs, photographers, florists, and cake bakers, in
all tiers and types, and I make sure to match each client up with
the appropriate vendor based on vision and style. I work with
people I know and trust, understanding that there’s a different
style for every customer. I also provide guidance on wedding
etiquette, overall budget, and scouting of venues.

q:
Describe the packages you offer.
a: There’s the Full Wedding and Event Planning Service,
which is intended for clients who need assistance with the en-
tire planning process from start to finish. My most common
service is Partial Wedding & Event Planning, which includes

Besides having extensive industry expe-
rience, I execute timely planning while
maintaining budgets and deadlines, ne-
gotiate with vendors while providing as-
surance that even the smallest details are
on point with each client’s theme and
concept, and advise on decisions that
bring the greatest impact to the event. If
you’re my client, I save you time, reduce
your stress, and give you an enjoyable
planning experience. Working for Colwen
Hotels, I’ve personally received many ac-
colades such as: Best of Weddings 2014
through 2018; induction into the Hall
of Fame by www.theknot.com; Couples
Choice for 2016 and 2018 by www.
weddingwire.com; and named the 2017 Anna Rozenblat Photography
Marriott International Catering Sales Excel-
lence Team of the Year for America’s East.
These prestigious awards are customer-
driven and require vendor qualification to
even be selected.

q:
What’s the benefit of an event-plan-
ning company?
a:
Clients often have multiple people
contributing themes, opinions, budget,
etc., and an event-planning company can
assist in navigating the wedding journey
and figuring out what’s most suitable for
each individual client. We help determine
the overall budget, concept, and theme,
making sure clients know how much
money they want to spend vs. what they BKB & Co. Nelly Photographer

can afford, how many guests they want to

invite vs. how many they should—things
like that.

q:
What’s the best thing about your job?
a: Being able to express my very best
self. I develop fabulous relationships with
each of my clients, while creating and ex-
ecuting lifelong unforgettable experiences
and getting to bring their visions to life.

Floral Fantasies
Ten Surprising Ideas to Make Your Wedding Bloom
by Emily Marcus

N o matter the season, flowers are a quintessential

component to every wedding. They add fresh fragrances and
splashes of color in an organic and elegant fashion. Bridal
bouquets, boutonnieres, table arrangements, and flower girls
have long been part of wedding traditions. But as individual-
ization becomes more of a focus over tradition, couples are
creatively incorporating flowers in new and exciting ways.
Consider these fresh ideas:

1. Alter Your Altar
Benjamin Newbold, creative director of Floral & Events for Winston
Flowers describes the trend of infinity altars: “They offer a unique
shape, certain to capture the attention of guests as they arrive to
your ceremony. As the focal point, they create a special setting where
wedding vows can be exchanged between a bride and groom. The
freestanding piece is typically installed outdoors, with shades of
green and white proving popular in the past. This year, however, we
expect to see much more color incorporated into these lush designs.
An added bonus to featuring this piece at your ceremony is that it
becomes an Instagram-worthy photo op during your cocktail hour!”

mollyannesphotos.com

2. Lush Up Your Locks

Wear a flower in your hair! According to Newbold, floral combs and
barrettes are replacing the floral crown trend. “A delicate floral ac-
cessory offers a touch of glamour to any bride’s look, as well as a
connection to her bouquet. If opting for a veil during the ceremony, a
floral accent makes a beautiful accessory after the veil comes off. As
more brides select updos for their big day, floral combs and barrettes
are becoming even more popular. Of course, they also look beautiful
when worn with hair down.”

mark-davidson.com

3. Sip Your Stems

Add a floral touch to your signature cocktail. Ian Swindlehurst, beverage manager of
Explorateur, notes, “Two things that jump to the front of my mind when I think about
weddings are liquor and flowers, bouquets of color and wonderful scents spread
throughout the wedding venue. Can you really have a great wedding without these
things? Why wouldn’t a couple want to fuse these elements and really tie the whole
event together?” Swindlehurst advises, “Flowers that are in season for the winter
are roses and violets. These flowers are visually beautiful, pleasantly aromatic, and
perfect for weddings, as well as being perfectly suited for cocktails. One of my all-
time favorite cocktails incorporates a floral touch by using a violet-based liqueur. The
Aviation, an awesome gin drink that is great all year round, is made of gin, Luxardo
Maraschino cherry liqueur, lemon juice, and Crème de violette. The violet liqueur
adds a stunning light blue/purple hue to the drink as well as the violet’s delicate
aromatics and flavor. No wedding guest could refuse.” Big Night Entertainment Group

4. Look up
Add a little magic with whimsical woodland ceiling treatments.
Newbold illuminates: “Cascading greenery intricately woven throughout the
ceiling of a tent looks lush in the light and dramatic at night. The whimsical
addition of hanging lanterns offers a dreamy glow reminiscent of dining
under the stars while cradled under a canopy of trees.”

5. Go Organic
Trade the cookie-cutter table arrangements for a natural look. Newbold
notes, “We’re seeing less of symmetrical centerpieces and more of linear
designs that feature organic vines, berries, and interesting asymmetrical
shapes. Things like branches, unique textures, found objects, and ceiling
accents are replacing traditional round centerpieces of the past. The final
outcome is a design that feels grown in place rather than installed.”
GKwanphoto.com

www.bridegroommag.com 83
6. Devour Your Flowers
“Edible flowers add a touch of floral flavor, color, and el-
egance in a dish,” explains Steve Zimei, executive chef at
CHOPPS American Bar and Grill. “I am a big fan of chive
blossoms. I like to add them to roasted asparagus and
serve in accompaniment with a roasted beef tenderloin
and sour cream whipped potatoes. Flowers can truly trans-
form a good dish into a great dish!”

7. Glam Up Your Garnishes

Sometimes the little visual touch makes a dish complete.
Explains Jami Barry, managing director of Vinwood Caterers,
“We use lots of floral garnishes for our hors d’oeuvre trays
from local farms—Wainer Family Farm Greenhouses/Jansal
Valley. I particularly like their mix of rose, pansy, marigold,
nasturtium, daisy, and firestix petals, as well as borage blos- Photo courtesy of Vinwood Caterers
soms. We often garnish some of our salads throughout the
season with nasturtium, marigolds, and a fabulous variety
of blossoms that we purchase from Sid Wainer.”

8. Chill Out
Freeze edible flowers and petals into ice cubes for a roman-
tic touch. Barry also suggests, “We served frozen Prosecco
(or cocktail) Pops with flowers/fruit frozen inside this sum-
mer—that is definitely an on trend summer wedding treat!”

9. Ditch the Blah Bouquet

Your bridal bouquet should be as unique as you! “Brides
are opting to carry bouquets that are unique in both style
and flower choices,” Newbold says. “We can expect to see
more texture than ever before with seasonal elements that
mimic the untamed beauty of the natural world. The design
style is loose and organic, as if the textural elements were
gathered right out of the garden.”

10. Don’t Knock It Till You Dry It

“At first thought, dried flowers are not the most romantic
addition to a wedding,” Newbold admits. “However, when
flowers dry, their shape and structure is transformed. These
structural qualities can be unique and beautiful, espe-
cially during the autumn months when textures are more
abundant. A perfect example is pampas grass, a feathery
plant that makes for a showy display when gathered into
a bunch. This is a lovely option for a rustic setting, or it
can be dressed up to feel glamorous when paired with the
right vase.”

The saying “it’s all in the details” is truer at a wed-

ding than it is in any other setting. Details are what
separate the memorable weddings from the rest.
Flowers are just one way to tweak or completely
break from tradition, delighting and surprising your
guests. From flavors to fragrances to freshness,
nature’s little beauties have serious potential for
wow factor.

Hair Hacks for the Big Day

Match the Tress to the Dress
“For strapless gowns, you have the best of both worlds with the

Go with the Flow
Amy Brackman, owner of LuxeBeautiQue Salon & Spa of
Swampscott, shares a few tips:
• Your current stylist may not be the best one to give you your
day-of tresses. Shop around.
• Set up trials at least six months in advance. If you are getting
married at an extremely popular time of year, do it one year
in advance.
• Put together a bag of products for your wedding day: pins
and dry shampoo and some styling paste. Jumping up and
down on the dance floor and being swept off your feet by
the groom can do a job on your coiffure.
• Casual is an option. Let your hair down or pull it up in a
ponytail. Some clients love being natural and going with the
flow, which leaves them free to have a great time.
