Fabulous Fireplaces—How to Update Your Fireplace
A fireplace is the heart of the home, representing warmth,
comfort, and security. ough not as essential as they used to
be—we don’t use them as a primary source for heating anymore,
for example—fireplaces are still a focal point. No matter how
lovely a room’s decor, a sooty, outdated fireplace detracts from
the overall design. With that in mind, here are some clever ways
to update your fireplace.
1. Change the surround. e immediate wall area around the
firebox is called a surround. Many brick fireplaces have a layer
of soot and discoloration built up on their surrounds from years
of use. Cleaning can be challenging because the usual methods
(power washing or sand blasting) are not suitable for indoors.
For this reason, it’s often easier to cover the discoloration with a
coat of paint or a layer of cladding. If you opt to paint, choose a
color similar to the walls if you’d prefer for your fireplace to blend
into the surroundings, or select a contrast color if you want to
make it the main focal point. Cladding is the application of one
material over another, which is a popular fireplace look. Consider
cladding the surround with materials such as ceramic stone or
metal tile. For a more contemporary look, a floor-to-ceiling stone
or tile slab is a sleek choice, creating a uniform column that will

MLK Day of Service is a federal holiday dedicated to the
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of his
legacy and passion for serving others.
Legislation signed in 1983 marked the birthday of the
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday.
In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr.
Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged
the Corporation for National and Community Service
with leading this effort. Each year, on the third Monday
in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as “a day
on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to
empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge
barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us
closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Early Childhood Learning Centers in
Redwood City Libraries
In 2010, David Genesy, then Redwood City Library Director, had
a goal of creating safe spaces for families in libraries and enlisted
the Redwood City Library Foundation for support. e Burgeon
Group, a firm dedicated to interactive learning spaces in public
libraries, was selected to design these spaces in all four Redwood
City Libraries. e group, headquartered in Arizona, uses their
imaginations to “create works of art that double as interactive toys
for kids of all ages,” designing spaces in libraries for playing,
dreaming, and learning. Experts in early childhood development,
they see libraries as a child’s first classroom, and install interactive
learning spaces only in libraries (over 400 across the U.S.) to meet
pre-literacy skills. e group has been working with Redwood City
library staffs for almost 10 years and this year completed the fourth
and final Redwood City Library early childhood learning center in
the Schaberg Library.
e Downtown center (in several phases) and Redwood Shores
center were completed first; the Baby Bay center in the Downtown
Library was finished in 2015. e Fair Oaks installation opened in
Summer 2018, followed by Schaberg in October. Staffs of each
library worked closely with Burgeon personnel to incorporate
elements of the community into the installation and to create
centers that are sturdy, safe, and interactive. e centers require little
maintenance and minimal supervision by library staff, and
interactive panels are interchangeable to facilitate repair or updating.
Photo holes in each center
encourage parents to share
experiences on social media.
Each library site installation has
different and unique interactive
elements, designed to fit the
space and culture of the library.
For example, in the Downtown,
Fair Oaks, and Schaberg library,
labels are in English and in Spanish; in the Redwood Shores
Library, labels are in English and Mandarin Chinese. e Fair
Oaks library center is shaped like a Farmers Market Truck to
promote healthy eating and active living. e Schaberg library
center, with very limited space, uses interactive transparent lenses
at windows. In the Redwood Shores library, windows were left
unobstructed to maintain wetland views. All Burgeon installations
across the country are unique.
A heartfelt thank you to RCLF
board members and volunteers
for making it possible to have an
Early Childhood Learning Center
installation at each library. e
children in our community can
have a variety of experiences by
visiting each Redwood City
Public Library location.
