Right for the Job?

An interview is a meeting between you and people from the company that you have applied to. It is a
chance for them to meet you and to find out if you are right for the job.
It is very important to prepare well for an interview. It also helps to think about the kind of questions the
interviewer may ask you. Two common questions are ‘Why do you want this job?’ and ‘Why do you think
that you will be good at it?’ Be creative, but truthful, and this will impress the interviewer. Show some
enthusiasm for the job and also try to express some interest in the company. Another favourite question
of interviewers is ‘What, in your opinion, is your greatest achievement?’ This does not have to be work-
related. Indeed, if you regard a personal or sporting success as the most important, then talk about it.
The interviewer is trying to find out about your character and personality. They may also ask you to
explain how you would deal with a specific problem at work.
Remember, if you have considered some possible answers and are quietly confident, then you will
perform at your best in an interview.

Tom: Guess what, Julia?
Julia: I don’t know Tom, what?
Tom: I’ve got a new job!
Julia: Oh congratulations! What’s the job?
Tom: I’m going to be a security guard at the bicycle factory.
Julia: Great. So, do you have to work shifts?
Tom: Yes, day shifts one month and then night shifts the next.
Julia: So, you’ll get extra money for working at night, won’t you?
Tom: That’s right. The pay’s pretty good but I think the work might be a bit boring.
Julia: I’m sure you’ll soon get used to it. And maybe, if you’re not busy, you’ll be able to read.
Tom: I hope so! You know I’m still studying for my accountancy exams, don’t you?
Julia: Well, there you are! It’s the perfect job for you, Tom.
