over The Bonneville Power Administration, in
partnership with 12 utilities, is giving people
across the Northwest a chance to compare light-
emitting diode technology to traditional lighting
why
in real-life settings. At 16 locations across the
region, participating organizations have replaced
half the traditional light bulbs with LEDs. During
October – Energy Awareness Month – people
using these business and public spaces can
compare the lights side-by-side, experience the
difference and provide feedback.
LEDs are small light sources that become
illuminated by the movement of electrons
through a semiconductor. Popular in
holiday lighting and other specialty
uses, LEDs are durable, long lasting,
and use about one-tenth the energy
of incandescent bulbs. In some of
the demonstration sites, the LEDs
are expected to reduce the existing
lighting energy consumption by 90
percent.
Starting Nov. 1, the remaining
traditional lights at the demonstration
sites will be replaced with LEDs.
Over the next year, BPA and the
participating organizations
will test and verify product
life, performance and user
satisfaction while learning how
to alleviate any installation or
market barriers that surround
this technology.

LEDs?
LED lighting technology is new and rapidly
evolving, and it offers considerable potential
for energy savings. Ongoing efficiency
improvements, new fixture designs and
innovative applications are increasing the
benefits of using this technology.
Longevity: LEDs promise up to 100,000
hours of life, 10 times the life of compact
fluorescent lamps and 66 times the life of
traditional incandescent light bulbs.
Runs Cool: LEDs remain cool,
emitting very little heat into the
surrounding environment.
Focused: LEDs provide an
excellent light source
for spaces that use
directional down
lighting, track lighting
and signage.
Versatility: A
variety of colors and
dimming options are
available.

Q Don’t LED lights make everything look blue?
A Thanks to advancements in technology,
new-generation LED lights offer light quality
similar to the light bulbs you currently use.
Q Do LED lights pose environmental
concerns?
A No. Unlike compact fluorescent bulbs, LED
lights do not contain mercury, so there aren’t
any disposal concerns. You can recycle
LEDs the same way you recycle traditional
bulbs.
Q Are LED lights dimmable?
A Yes. When shopping for LEDs, double-
check the packaging to make sure the
lamp and dimming controls are compatible.
Several of the LED demonstrations include
dimming, and the information gathered in
the demonstration may help inform future
dimming applications.
Q Are there incentives for LED lights?
A Yes. LED incentives are available in the
Pacific Northwest. Contact your electric
utility for details. As the technology
continues to improve, more options may
become available.
