Farm tours for teachers By Meg Kennedy

In our fast-paced world it’s easy to believe food magically appears on the
supermarket shelf; but in reality, it is the result of thousands of workers who
make up the backbone of Australia’s agriculture industry.
Local Balliang farmers Chris and Kate Sharkey have taken it upon themselves
to show the behind the scenes of food production, creating Boundary Fence
Farm Tours, which aims to give a hands-on experience for visitors about the
industry.
The idea for Boundary Fence came around two years ago, as co-owner
Kate Sharkey says the opportunity arose to speak with a number of Food
Technology teachers. She realised some were struggling with a change in their
course curriculum, and thus the idea for a hands-on, real-world experience
for both students and teachers was born.
“I felt on a practical level I could facilitate an opportunity for the teachers
to visit our farm, speak directly with my husband Chris and other full-time
professional food producers to help with the ‘knowledge gap’, and give
teachers more confidence around their course curriculum,” she said.
The tour includes a paddock walk to inspect a food crop, seeing farm
technology such as weather stations and solar pumps at work, as well as
viewing livestock, visiting grain silos and a stone-mill.
The tours are designed to give a balanced view, align with the course
curriculum, and no questions are off-limits.
Ms Sharkey says a gap in education, as well as a growing urbanised
population, the rise of social media and modern society’s abundance of food
has “led to the true value of our food producers to be lost.”
She also hopes that Victoria will see mandatory agricultural education
in primary schools, following the path of New South Wales’ recent
implementation in its curriculum.
“Agriculture plays such a vital role in the wider community, from growing
food and fibre to managing the environment and helping create job
opportunities,” she said.
“It’s hoped the tours will continue to be a useful resource not only for teachers,
but related industry groups whom otherwise may not have the opportunity
to visit a commercial farm, to see first-hand modern-day food production and
the challenges and opportunities that go with it.”
