LEGO Lab Name______________
A laboratory notebook is one of the most useful tools in science class and in science‐
related fields. It is a permanent, documented record of observations made during an
experiment or activity. They can used as evidence in court, during patent litigation and
as a tool to make decisions in industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Scientists,
doctors, engineers and their support staff all need to keep formal written records, and
learning how to do so in a clear and organized fashion is an important job skill. You will write many lab
procedures in this class and they will have the following in common.
• Include a materials list.
• Write clearly and to the point.
• Organize the procedure so that it is in a numbered step format
• Use titled diagrams when necessary
Designing a Procedure
In this activity, you will build a vehicle or structure using the LEGO pieces provided. Then you will write
a procedure that tells how to build the structure you designed. Another team of students is going to
follow your procedure and try to replicate the structure you built so, your procedure must be specific
and easy to follow.
1. Using 10 – 20 LEGO pieces, design your vehicle or structure. Make a colored sketch of your model
in the space below. Take a photo of the model and email it to jennifer.o’ryan@sno.wednet.edu
2. Print the name of your design on the back of the index card.
3. Write your name/s in the upper right corner.
4. On the front of the card, write a procedure for building your structure or vehicle. Be sure to refer
to the bulleted list above.
5. After you are finished, have the teacher photograph your model with the name under it.
6. Disassemble your model and put the pieces and the card in a baggie.
Questions:
Do you think the other team will be able to replicate your structure following the procedure you
wrote? ________Why or why not? _________________________________
List two things you think were “good” about your procedure?

Following a Procedure:
Building the Structure
1. Record the number on the LEGO set you are using _______________
2. Using the procedure and set of LEGO pieces given, try to assemble the structure as instructed.
(No fair asking the creators for help!)
3. When you are finished, bring it to the teacher to be photographed.
Evaluation:
1. Were you able to follow the procedure and build the structure correctly?
2. Was the procedure easy or hard to follow? ____________
3. Please explain what made the procedure easy to follow or hard to follow.
Easy to follow Parts Hard to follow parts
4. Make two suggestions on how the other team could improve their procedure.
