Class White PARAGRAPH 1: Identify the central idea

In the short story “Civil peace” by Chinua Achebe, the author writes about a man how

considers himself “lucky”, “Blessed”, “A happy-survival” from the war, with his ¾ children and

wife maria, trying to provide for his family. The central idea of the story is To provide for your

family of 4, to keep them safe from harm and danger to life-threats and off having faith and

believing in hope is being proterated to the readers . As the story goes onwards with the plots the

story shows off jonathan’s actions that he makes and what he feels throughout the story. For Commented [1]: added for central idea....
Commented [2]: more on central idea....
Example “Jonathan says to himself he is carrying the heads of 4 of his family members and one

of the heads of his dead children.” Shows he trying to provide for his family and cares for his

family. For example on page 3, “Jonathan and his sons were picking mangoes and selling for

pennies to soldiers, wives and so he can bring back to his to bake. This demonstrates the central

idea by showing that, Jonathan is providing for his family with his sons to be able to be

(survivors) of aftermath of the war in around nigeria. The author also writes, “ “Jonathan does all

this cause to provide for his family and be able to keep a promise to himself of keeping his

family safe” Pg:2. This shows the central idea because, Jonathan after coming from the war his

house was still in nigeria and his family, he was able to find a house for them to live in and not

die because of no shelter.

PARAGRAPH 2: Quote and analysis

One writing strategy Chinua Achebe uses in his story “civil” peace is characterization,

Characterization is what a person is known for throughout their actions and how they show/tell
their personality is. For example on page 2: “Nothing puzzles god” The characterization Commented [3]: please see thoughout for revisions I
made...
develops the central idea by about god, doesn’t hesitate to kill anyone (maybe mentioned evil

about it), to pass them away, to kill them because god nothing (maybe nothing like pain god

feels), which achebe is trying to tell through the story of jonathan...Which also tells me he

believes or is “religious” and could have “faith” in god because he mentioned about god, what

god does or not do in the sentence…. Another example of characterization is “Of course the Commented [4]: revisioned for quote throughout of not
believing or beliving in god =faith...
doors and windows were missing and five sheets off the roof. But what was that”. Shows the Commented [5]: another example of
characterization...
positive outlook by, jonathan of his house, his (“characterization”) develops the central idea by

shows how johnathan does everything he can do to provide for his family, and how hardworking

he is for his family to have a roof over them. About finding a house, aftermath of the war, or the Commented [6]: of what charaterization is developed

causes the hometown, has suffered. About the, jonathans happiness, shows negative in “in what

was that” “but shows the positive, how happy he is to find a house for his family. “
