A bolt from the blue By Terry Bernal

DAILY JOURNAL STAFF

Kaimei Gescuk entered her junior season of 2018

as something of an unknown on the local cross-
country circuit.
Sure, last season — her first year ever running
competitively — she finished eighth in the Central
Coast Section Division I championship race. In
returning this season by missing the first two meets
with an ankle injury, no one knew what to expect
from the girl who arrived at Carlmont as a transfer
sophomore that loathed running.
“I don’t think either of us knew where she would
end up or how far she could go,” Carlmont head
coach John Lilygren said.
Gescuk proved a bolt from the blue. For starters,
she captured the Peninsula Athletic League varsity
girls’ championship, leading the Lady Scots to a
team title Nov. 3 at Crystal Springs with a time of
18 minutes, 41 seconds. Two weeks later, on Nov.
18 at Toro Park in Salinas, she flew to a CCS
Division I championship with a time of 18:19.6.
Now, the junior sensation has been named Daily
Journal Cross-Country Runner of the Year.
And not even Gescuk saw any of this coming
entering into her junior campaign.

Kurdish official asks for US clarifications over withdrawal By Bassem Mroue

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEIRUT — Syria’s Kurds are awaiting clarifications from

the U.S. over America’s plans to pull out its troops from
Syria following comments made by a top White House aide
that appeared to counter earlier comments by President
Donald Trump, a Syrian Kurdish official said Monday.
Speaking to the Associated Press from northern Syria
Monday, Badran Ciya Kurd said the Kurds have not been
informed of any change in the U.S. position and were in the
dark about the latest comments by U.S. national security
adviser John Bolton and what they indicated.
“We have not been formally or directly notified, all what
we heard were media statements,” he said.
Bolton, on a visit to Israel Sunday, said U.S. troops will
not leave northeastern Syria until IS militants are defeated
and American-allied Kurdish fighters are protected. The
comments appeared to put the brakes on a withdrawal
abruptly announced by Trump last month and initially
expected to be completed within weeks.
While Bolton said there is now no timetable, Trump reaf-
REUTERS FILE PHOTO firmed his commitment to withdrawing U.S. troops, though
Syrian Democratic Forces and U.S. troops are seen during a patrol near Turkish border in Hasakah, Syria. the president said “I never said we’re doing it that quickly”
and added that there will not be a total pullout “until ISIS is
gone.”
Trump had said in his Dec. 19 withdrawal announcement
that U.S. forces “have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only rea-
son for being there during the Trump Presidency.”
The back and forth is troubling for the Kurds, who have
been America’s only partners on the ground in Syria in the
fight against IS. Trump’s decision last month drew wide-
spread criticism from allies, led to the resignation of U.S.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and raised fears over clearing
the way for a Turkish assault on the Kurdish fighters. Turkey
considers the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or
YPG, a terrorist group linked to an insurgency within its
own borders.
Bolton arrived in Turkey on Monday, accompanied by the
chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph
Dunford, for talks with government officials.
