B. MATERIALS & SUBMITTALS

The Contractor shall comply and fix all materials for structural steelwork from an approved
source, known to produce materials complying with this Specification, and as specified in the
Contract Documents.

Particulars relating to materials and structural steelwork fabricated in accordance with this
Specification shall be clearly indicated on the delivery note, invoice or Suppliers certificate with
each consignment and shall include:

 The name, trademark or other means of identification of manufacturer.

 The manufacturer’s mill certificate, giving chemical analysis and strength characteristics
of the steel, which can be identified to the supplied items and quality control tests sheets
for each delivery of structural steel.

 Full details of the results of material tests.

 Full details of steel types and types of nuts and bolts to be used.

 Full details of erection procedures.

 Full details of proposals for all main welds, arrangements of welded assemblies and
welding procedure.

 Approval of welders including all tests for welders.

 Full details of protection system to be used for steel work.

B.1 STEELWORK

Weldable structural steel sections shall comply with BS 7668 and hot rolled steel sections shall
comply with BS EN 10210. Cold formed structural hollow sections shall comply with BS EN
10219.

Minimum thickness of any structural steel member shall not be less than 6 mm.

Steelwork sizes shall comply with BS 4. Weldable structural steel shall comply with BS EN
10137 and BS 7668. It shall be Grade 43A and shall have a maximum carbon equivalent value
of 0.41 %.

Cold formed sections (Z purlins and grits) 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm thick shall be Aluminium / Zinc
alloy coating, 150 G/M2 total with Aluminum 55% and 45% Zinc by weight. Base metal to
ASTM A-792, Grade 50 B, 345 N/MM 2 yield. 2.5 mm thick sections shall be hot dip galvanised
to BS 729. Base metal to ASTM A-446 Grade D, 345 N/MM2 yield.

B.2 ORDINARY & HIGH STRENGTH BOLTS

Ordinary bolts and high strength bolts shall comply with BS 3692 or BS 4190 for hexagonal head
bolts, or BS 4933 for countersunk or cup head bolts. Nuts shall have a strength grade equal or
greater than the grade of the bolt (or other threaded element) with which they are used. Plain and
tapered washers shall comply with BS 3410 or BS 4320, as appropriate.

B.3 HIGH STRENGTH FRICTION GRIP BOLTS

High strength friction grip bolts, if specified, shall comply with BS 4395. Nuts shall have a
strength grade equal or greater than the grade of bolt ( or other threaded element) with which
they are used.

The use of high strength friction grip bolts shall comply with BS 4604 Part 1.

B.4 HOLDING DOWN BOLTS

Holding down bolts shall be mild steel hot dip galvanised to BS-729 and shall be adequately
anchored in the foundation by washer plates or other approved method.

B.5 FLOOR PLATES

Floor plates shall be non-skid mild steel plates with raised pattern (not diamond), shall be
minimum of 10 mm thick and shall be adequately supported.

B.6 OPEN STEEL FLOORING

Open steel flooring and stair treads shall comply with BS 4592 and shall be of the square grid
type.

B.7 FASTENERS FOR BAR GRATING

Fasteners for bar grating shall be safety clips. All items shall be hot dip galvanised.

Bar gratings shall be fastened to supporting members at each corner and at centre of grating
panels at intermediate supports. Additional fasteners shall be used as necessary to fasten grating
at locations, where due to misalignment there is a gap of more than 3 mm between support and
grating.

Field cut hole in bar grating and/or floor plating shall be bended with a toe-plate.

C. TESTING

The welding examination, inspection and testing are responsibility of the Contractor unless
otherwise provided in the Contract Documents.

C.1 WELDING INSPECTION PERSONNEL

Welding Inspection Personnel shall, as a minimum, hold one of the following qualifications, or
equivalent:

 CSWIP Phase 6 Welding Inspector as specified in Welding Institute Document CSWIP-


WI-6, latest edition.

 BGC Welding Inspector (Front End) as specified in British Gas Corporation Engineering
Standard BGC/PS/Q4, latest edition.

 AWS Certified Welding Inspector as specified in American Welding Society document


QC-1, latest edition.

C.2 NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION PERSONNEL

Non-Destructive Examination Personnel shall be qualified to a minimum level of ASNT Level II


as specified in ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC- 1A, latest edition, or equivalent.

C.3 REQUIREMENTS

The Contractor shall prepare a non-destructive testing requirements form in accordance with the
Contract and design requirements. This form shall specify the types and extent of non-
destructive testing to be performed and the procedure to be followed. This form shall be referred
in the Quality Control Plan specified in the Contract Quality Assurance schedule or specification.

The method and extent of inspection and testing in the absence of a relevant application standard
shall be agreed between the Contracting parties.

The acceptance criteria for assessing the quality of welds shall be as specified in the design code
or design specification, or drawing or Contract, as applicable.

The acceptance criteria for welded joints in the absence of a relevant application standard shall
be agreed between the Contracting parties. The following may be used as basis for discussion
and agreement :

 AWS D1.1 para 8.15 for non tubular structures


 AWS D1.1 para 10.17 for tubular structures

It shall be noted that in addition to the testing described above, it may require further testing of
weldments or of any materials used to be carried out by an independent tester, either in his
Workshop or on the Worksite.

D. PRE-ENGINEERED STRUCTURES

All pre-engineered structures shall be designed and erected by pre-engineered building sub-
contractors. The design parameter and specification shall remain uniform and the design shall
satisfy all the relevant codes and practices.

The minimum requirements for pre-engineered structures include:

 Intermediate columns shall not be considered as props but shall be designed for
monolithic connection. All support conditions shall be hinged.
 A structural connection shall be provided at eave and ridge locations in the transverse
direction.
 Maximum spacing of sag rods shall be 2500 mm.
 Welding shall be continuous and on both sides.
 Flange brace connection with purlins and rafters shall be minimum 4 mm.
 Wind bracings shall be angles or tubes.

The structural steel fabricated outside UAE shall be endorsed by an approved Third Party
Inspector for the material, fabrication, welding and painting. .

E. FABRICATION

E.1 DRAWINGS

The Contractor will be supplied with key plans, sections and elevations showing the center lines
and/or member sizes and arrangement of all steelwork.

On receipt of these drawings, the Contractor shall examine them and immediately report any
discrepancies for a decision before proceeding with the workshop drawings and fabrication
Work.

All workshop drawings shall be prepared by the Contractor and submitted, in duplicate, allowing
reasonable time to approve the drawings. Fabrication shall not commence until the Workshop
Drawings have been approved. This shall not relieve the Contractor of any obligations or
responsibilities to carry out the work in accordance with the conditions of Contract.

The workshop drawings are to be an interpretation of the tender/contract drawings and any
further drawings or written instructions issued from time to time during the course of the
Contract. The working drawings must clearly show all details and dimensions of the work, the
material from which each part is made, and the calculated weight of the material shown on the
drawing shall be stated on it.

If called upon to do so, the Contractor is to supply additional copies of any drawing that may
require for coordinating purposes.

E.2 DIMENSIONS

The Contractor shall make his own survey of the Worksite and shall be responsible for obtaining
all dimensions and levels necessary for the fabrication of the steelwork

The Contractor shall be responsible for every item being fabricated to the correct form and size
notwithstanding any approval of the Contractor’s Workshop drawings.

The Contractor shall carry out Quality Control reports of every fabrication, indicating both
correct form and size of each member.

F. BOLTING

All connections shall have a minimum of 2 bolts per connection and the gusset plates shall have
a minimum thickness of 10 mm. Eccentric connections will not be permitted.

All bolt holes in members built up by welding shall be drilled after welding has been completed.
Holes shall not be distorted or enlarged when using drills. Drills of larger diameter than the hole
shall not be used. Bolt holes in structural members shall be drilled or punched (for secondary
members only) . Burning of holes will not be permitted.

No thread portion of any bolt shall be within the thickness of the parts bolted together, nor shall
any portion of the shank extend beyond the face of the washer when fully tightened. The end of
each bolt shall protrude by at least two complete thread and by not more than three complete
threads beyond the outer face of the nut.

The selection of the bolt diameters shall be in accordance with the width of the flanges and the
thickness of the sections to be connected. The minimum bolt diameter for main connections
shall be 20 mm, and for other members transmitting forces shall be 16 mm. The spacing of the
bolts in the direction in which the force is applied shall be at least three times the diameter of the
bolt, (measured in the direction of the force) . The distance between the last bolt and the end of
the structural member to be connected shall not be less than one and a half times the diameter of
the bolt.

All regular rough high strength bolts shall be with hexagon heads and nuts and provided with
ISO course Metric threads, except that bolts for railing and toe plate connections shall have
round heads and bolts for floor- plate connections shall have counter sunk flat heads. For sliding
connections shoulder bolts shall be used. All regular rough bolts (grade 4.6) shall be hot-dip
galvanised. All high strength bolts shall be cadmium-plated. High strength bolts ( grade 8.8)
shall be used for connection of girders, main floor and roof beams bracings, and struts, bolted
moment connections, connections subject to reversal of stresses, connections for supports of
machinery or other moving loads, and for all other such connections.

Bolts for connections such as wall girders, door framing, alignment bracing , secondary beams,
and miscellaneous non-critical members may be regular rough bolts of grade 4.6. Tapered
washers shall be provided for bolted connections with inclined surfaces, such as channel flanges.

Fasteners for bar grating shall be safety clips. All items shall be hot-dip galvanised. Bar grating
shall be fastened to supporting members at each corner and at centre of grating panels at
intermediate supports. Additional fasteners shall be used as necessary to fasten grating at
locations, where due to mis alignment there is a gap of more than 3 mm between support and
grating.

G. WELDING

Welding shall be by the metallic arc process, using electrodes complying with the requirements
of BS EN 499 using equipment, plant and accessories complying with BS 638. The whole of
the Works shall be in accordance with the requirements of BS 5135.

All operatives employed to perform welding operations in the Works shall be proved to be
competent welders, by the production of appropriate trade certificates or by the performance of
welding tests.

Prior to commencement of welding, the Contractor shall select, the welding procedure he intends
to use and submit his choice for approval. Application for approval shall be made and welding
shall not commence until approval has been given.

When approved, the selected welding procedure specification shall be stamped 'Approved for
Fabrication" and shall incorporate the Contract No. for which the procedure is intended.

The welding procedure shall be valid for the specified Contract only and shall not be
transferable.

Any steelwork to be Worksite welded shall be cleaned back to bare metal in the area to be
affected by the weld, and subsequently repainted in accordance with the Contract Documents.

All welded joints shall be formed by continuous welds, to seal and protect the space between
welded components from ingress of corrosion. Welding shall be carried out in approved
workshops under the specified conditions and where continuous supervision is exercised. Site
welding shall not be done under weather or other conditions which might adversely affect the
efficiency of the welding and where necessary effective protection and other safe guards, shall be
provided.

H. DELIVERY, STORAGE & HANDLING

Fabricated parts shall be handled and stored so that permanent damage to components shall not
occur. The Contractor shall provide means to minimise damage to protective treatment on
steelwork, and any damage shall be made good at the Contractors expense. Lifting slings shall be
of nylon rope, chains and hooks will not be used in contact with the painted steelwork.

All steelwork shall be protected from damage in transit. Particular care shall be taken to stiffen
free ends to prevent permanent distortion and adequately protect surfaces. All bolts, nuts,
washers, screws, small loose plates and small articles, shall be suitably packed and identified.

I. ERECTION

The Contractor's proposed erection sequence and procedure shall be submitted for approval prior
to the erection of any steelwork.

Erection of the steelwork shall be executed in accordance with the recommendation of BS 5531
'Code of Practice for Safety in Erecting Structural Frames'.

Throughout erection of the structure, steelwork shall be securely bolted or fastened in order to
ensure that it can adequately withstand all loadings liable to be encountered during erection,
including, where necessary, those from erection plant and its operation. Any temporary bracing
shall be left in position until erection is sufficiently advanced to allow for its safe removal.

All connections for temporary bracing, bolts, members, and the like, shall be provided for
erection purposes and shall be made so as not to weaken the permanent structure or impair
serviceability.

The Contractor shall be entirely responsible for the stability of the structure during erection, and
shall arrange that sufficient tack bolts are used to ensure that the Work will remain rigid until
final bolting is completed.

The Contractor shall supply and fix, without extra charge, any temporary bracing that may be
necessary. Final bolting shall follow on as soon as possible in order to keep the amount of tack-
bolted work to a minimum.

J. WORKMANSHIP

Notwithstanding any other clause contained in this Specification, the standard of materials and
workmanship shall be in no way inferior to the recommendations contained in BS 5950.

Except as noted below, abutting surfaces depending on contact for the transmission of
compressive loads or forces, shall be machined (together with gussets where present already
welded on) so that the whole area of the abutting surfaces is in direct contact. Faces to be
grouted to a concrete foundation need not be dressed.

Caps, bases and end plates shall be fixed to the member concerned prior to erection. Unless
indicated otherwise in the Contract Documents, such caps, bases and end plates shall be truly at
right angles to the member axis.

The ends of all beams shall be accurately cold sawn. End cleats shall not project more than
2.0mm beyond the end of the beam.

Welding procedures shall be arranged to avoid distortion of the completed member. Work that is
deformed by shrinkage after welding, shall be rejected and shall be made good at the
Contractor’s expense.

Sheared edges of gussets or other members shall be straightened and dressed where necessary.

Shop connections shall be either welded or bolted, unless indicated otherwise in the Contract
Documents. Worksite connections shall be bolted or welded, as indicated in the Contract
Documents.

All holes shall be drilled to template through thickness in one operation, where possible, and all
burrs removed. The diameter of the holes shall comply with BS 5950 : Part 2 Section 3.4.

All bolt shanks shall be solid with heads and lengths sufficient to allow not less than two clear
threads projection beyond the nuts after tightening. 'The length of the unscrewed shank or barrel
shall be at least equal to the thickness of the members to be connected.

Washers shall be provided under all nuts. On beveled surfaces, square taper washers of 5mm
mean thickness shall be used under nuts or heads, as appropriate.

K. COMPOSITE FLOORING

When specified in the Contract Documents composite flooring shall comply with the
requirements of BS 5950 Part 4.

Any damaged surface of profiled steel sheets used in the construction of composite flooring due
to welding, cutting, etc., shall be made good in accordance with the manufacturers written
instructions prior to pouring concrete.

L. GROUTING

The grout shall be approved non-shrink grout, preferably two component pre-dosed resin grout
or suitable non-shrink cement grout from reputed manufacturers. The grout shall be mixed
and used strictly as per the manufacturer's instructions.

The grout shall solidly fill the space to be grouted and shall permanently retain its original
volume under climatic conditions prevailing in the region. All anchor bolt holes shall be filled
with grout.

After sufficient setting has been attained, the edges of grout shall be chamfered 25 mm. all
around the base. The finished surface shall be floated smooth.

When completely dry, all exposed grouting containing metallics shall be given two coats of a
suitable oil and alkali resistant coating. The grout surface shall be neutralised before painting.
