1 Introduction

40127944.eps
The RS wheel block system consists of a housing welded together from two
sheet steel halves with an integrated travel wheel. It can be attached to customer
structures with ease using the prepared connecting surfaces. The varied
connection options make it simple to add it to existing installations at a later date.
The advantages of the system are:
• Load-bearing block enclosed on 5 sides with connecting surfaces featuring
multiple bore holes
• Reamed lateral bore holes for the pin connection
• Integrated connections for torque brackets, guide roller arrangements and
buffers
• Steel housing primed and finished with a top coat in RAL 7001
• Long service life of the steel and mechanical elements
• Rapid installation and removal for all connection variants
• Wide variety of standard travel wheel designs
• Special designs for high temperature applications up to 110 °C or with furnace
carriage bearings up to 250 °C.
Size RS 125 is available in stainless steel. It is particularly suitable for applications
in the chemical industry, the foodstuffs sector and in aggressive environments.
The gearbox has a hollow shaft featuring involute splines on the output side. The
positive connection to the travel wheel shaft guarantees reliable torque transfer,
which is specially important for reversing and intermittent operation. The drive
torque is transferred either direct to the wheel block by means of a D1 torque
bracket or via the connecting structure using a D2 torque bracket.

Hydropur tyre The traction resistance of travel wheels depends largely on deformation at the
point on which the wheel stands. Deformation varies as a function of load and time
in the case of Hydropur-elastomer wheels. The specific traction resistances are
given for 3 possible cases of operation:

2.8 Drive combinations The drive combinations given in the following tables apply for indoor operation with
40 cycles per hour.
For further details, refer to catalogue 203 352 44, section 5.1.1. Work cycle.
Line-fed travel drives fitted with ZBF and KBF motors have acceleration and
mechanical deceleration of between approx. 0,08 m/s2 and 0,5 m/s2 for a basic
load varying between approx. 30% and 100%.
2
The acceleration values from the table below apply for travel drives equipped with
frequency inverter-fed ZBA motors.
Speed [m/min] 16 – 31,5 40 – 63 80 100 – 125 160
Acceleration [m/s2] 0,15 0,20 0,25 0,30 0,35
Deceleration rates from 0,1 to 0,45 m/s² can be achieved for an emergency stop
with the values from the brake torque table. Higher brake torques must be selected
for applications with swaying loads; confirm details with our office, if required.
The gearbox specifications do not allow for travel wheel slipping torque or 3-phase
regenerative braking for pole-changing motors.
Timed braking must be provided for pole-changing motors.
The speeds specified are standard speeds. Line-fed travel drives may differ from
these standard speeds due to the various transmission ratios provided by different
gearbox types and sizes as well as due to load fluctuations.
The speeds specified are standard speeds. Actual speeds may differ from these
standard speeds due to the various transmission ratios provided by different
gearbox sizes as well as due to load fluctuations.
The standard speeds indicated are achieved by setting the frequency of travel
drives for frequency inverters.
To use the following tables, the total load must be divided by number of drives.
41629345.eps
The selection tables were not calculated to allow for a load situation with a “buffer
impact”. If this load situation cannot be excluded by means of suitable measures, it
must be ensured that travel wheel torque in the event of a buffer impact (Mpu) does
not exceed permissible travel wheel torque (Mlimit):
Mpu ≤ Mlimit

Element for bolted connection to support structure and prepared for inserted pin connection with wheel block.
The bolt-on element enables steelwork tolerances to be compensated (by turning the wheel plane around axis A-A) by
means of adjusting elements arranged at the side (section B-B).
The bolt-on elements are protected by a resin-based coat of metal primer.
Bore holes on the lower side of the wheel block are used to accommodate spacers. The wheel block is positioned and
fixed in the bolt-on element by inserting shims.
If guide rollers are fitted, the drive can only be installed vertically and the torque bracket connected at the top.

For direct connection to the end face of the wheel block and attachment to the top of the end connection element or own
manufactured support structures.
202 597 44_250917
ADK/AUK gearboxes must be attached to the torque bracket in a precisely horizontal or vertical position. To achieve this,
the spacer elements of the tensioning bolt connection must be stacked accordingly. Ensure that a plastic washer (damping
element) is located on both sides of the gearbox eye.
The position of the torque bracket is determined by dimension Z for own manufactured supporting structures.

4.1 Buffers Buffers with a high energy absorption capacity are required to prevent any critical
deformation in structural steelwork resulting from travel units colliding with each
other or with stops at the end of a track.
For cellular foam and rubber buffers, the complete volume of the buffer is utilised
as pressure is distributed over the whole section of the buffer. Lateral deformation
remains low even under maximum compression.
The favourable diameter-to-length ratio of this buffer ensures that any
displacement of the buffers due to play in the guidance of the crane rails has no
adverse effect.
4.1.1 Buffer dimensions For the special load situation when a buffer impact occurs, it is assumed that
cranes, crabs and travel carriages, etc., only rarely collide in normal operation.
The required buffer energy absorption capacity must be calculated:
• for the maximum possible buffer impact speed, however, at least k = 70% of the
travel speed, if speed reduction devices are fitted
• with k = 85% of the travel speed for cranes
• with k = 100% of the travel speed for crabs, travel carriages, etc.
(k = buffer energy factor)

4.1.2 DPZ cellular plastic buffer Due to its excellent physical qualities as regards elasticity, cushioning and energy
absorption, the cellular polyurethane material is particularly well suited for buffers.
The buffer material is chemically resistant to ozone, oxygen, water, petrol and most
oils and industrial greases. The buffer is fully functional at operating temperatures
of –20 °C to +80 °C. The rubber buffer should be used in conditions of high
humidity in conjunction with high temperatures.

To ensure uniform buffer impact with a horizontal guide roller arrangement fitted to
only one wheel block, type E1/E2 spacers must be fitted between the buffer and
wheel block on the opposite side.
Spacers must be fitted between the buffer and the torque bracket if a buffer
is installed in combination with a type D1 torque bracket. Spacers must
be additionally fitted on the compensating side if a central drive unit inside
arrangement (ZI), central drive unit outside arrangement (ZA) or an individual drive
unit is installed on one side.

4.2 Horizontal guide
rollers
4.2.1 General Besides lateral guidance by travel wheels that have flanges, the system can also
be guided on the side by horizontal guide rollers. The benefits are that no wear
occurs on the flanges and noise levels are considerably reduced due to the rolling
movement of the guide rollers.
Spacers must be fitted if horizontal guide rollers are only installed on one side (see
section 4.1.4)
Guide rollers can be bolted to and adjusted on the roller bracket. The bracket can
be fitted on the inside or outside of both ends of the wheel block. After the bracket
is bolted on (detail X), holes must drilled for fitting roll pins (prepared hole d3).
78
4.2.2 RS 125 - 315 horizontal guide The roller axles are positively retained in the bracket. The position of the rollers
rollers can be independently adjusted in increments of 1,5 mm. Refer to the table below
for minimum and maximum distances b.
The guide rollers transmit horizontal forces F amounting to:
• 20% of the Rperm values for connection variants K 6.1, K 6.2, W 6.5 and B 6.6.
• 10% of the Rperm values for connection variant S 6.3.
• 20% of the Rperm values for connection variant S 6.4.
Rperm corresponds to the maximum load capacity calculated according to
section 2.6.

4.7 Optional travel wheel
materials
Travel wheels with hardened treads For operating conditions in which increased wheel flange wear is likely (e.g. rails
and wheel flanges with extreme dirt accumulation caused by handling mould sand or similar material),
the treads and flanges of spheroidal-graphite cast iron travel wheels can be
hardened.
Surface hardening is 56 ±2 HRc with a penetration depth of 2 to 3 mm.
Hardening is intended only to minimise wear of the travel wheel. It does not
increase its load-bearing capacity. The wheel load must be reduced to 80% of
maximum wheel load Rmax.
43435344.eps
Travel wheels with Hydropur tyre Hydropur is a polyurethane elastomer which features good resistance to hydrolysis
compared to other conventional polyurethanes (such as Vulkollan, for example).
Further benefits of Hydropur tyres include
- low abrasion
- high load capacity and,
- at the same time, high expansion range
This material features significantly higher friction values compared to EN_GJS
(GGG) wheels, thus making travel wheels with a Hydropur tyre predestined for
highly dynamic applications. Running noises are reduced to a minimum owing to
the good dampening characteristics. Attention must be paid to the considerably
reduced permissible load capacities compared to wheels of EN-GJS-650-4 (GGG
65). Wheels with Hydropur tyres are particularly suitable for operation on concrete
surfaces owing to their low contact pressure. They are particularly suitable for high
acceleration rates of up to 1,5 m/s², for friction drives due to the high friction coef-
ficient between the travel wheel tyre and counterpart material. This material can
be used for short periods from –20 °C to +80 °C and at standard operating tem-
peratures from –10 °C to +60 °C. In such cases, pay attention to the reduction in
permissible load capacity (see section 2.6.10).
High air humidity in connection with high temperatures must be avoided despite
good resistance to hydrolysis. This material only offers low resistance to microbes.
Use under these ambient conditions must be avoided.
202 597 44_250917
86
Polyamide Compared to EN-GJS-650-4 (GGG 65) travel wheels, travel wheels made of polya-
mide (PA 6 casting) feature significantly reduced travel noise for comparable friction
values. Attention must also be paid to the significantly reduced permissible wheel
load compared to travel wheels made of EN-GJS-650-4 (formerly GGG 65). Owing
to the high specific contact pressure as a result of its convex shape, polyamide is
only suitable for operation on metal that has sufficient strength. The operating tem-
perature ranges from –20 °C to +80 °C.
Stainless steel Size RS 125 is available in stainless steel. It is particularly suitable for applications
in the chemical industry, the foodstuffs sector and in aggressive environments (see
section 4.6).
The maximum load capacity is limited to 2,6 t or 2,5 t, depending on the connec-
tion method.
