Introduction

The purpose of this assignment was to be able to use computer aided design software to produce a
hydraulic screw pump using a drawing, in metric dimensions. The parts had to be made with exact
dimensions, otherwise they would not assemble correctly. The software I used to make the pump
was Creo Parametric 3.0. There were 8 parts to be made including the bolts, after the parts were
made, they were assembled. The shaft of the pump had to be analysed using AutoDesk Simulation,
so I could see how much stress and strain the shaft can withstand when load is applied to it when
assembled with other components.

Develop solid models of all the components. Give 10 different examples of why parts of the models
contain associativity such that changes in design would automatically adjust the model dimensions. Take
screen shots of the parts to illustrate associativity.

Develop the assembly of the pump. The assembly should follow real life practice and contain sub-
assemblies. Produce a cross section view to show the internal parts assembled. Create a Bill of Materials

Develop a meshed model of the component. Explain what is meant by boundary constraints and their
effect.

A boundary constraint allows you to block one or several global coordinates direction x, y, z. This
allows you to apply stress test the end of the shaft without applying stress to the full worm. Below u
can see the highlighted area has boundary constraints on them. The material I chose is Steel AISI

Load the meshed model using FEA principles and analyse the effect of increasing the bending load on the
shaft due to increased power requirements of the pump

200/4 0.004733833
300/4 0.00710075
600/4 0.0142015

The displacement magnitude has a direct correlation with the force being applied to the shaft. This
can be shown in by the above table, where the displacement magnitude of 100/4 is 0.002366917,
and the displacement magnitude for 200/4 is 0.004733833. The displacement magnitude doubles,
this reinforces my point that there is a correlation between the force applied and the displacement
magnitude.

What is the maximum belt tension applied as a load before the shaft fouls the gland
Determine the belt tension to transmit 6Kw of power and the gland clearance required to prevent fouling.

Operating Speed = 2300 rev/min

Pulley = 130 mm diameter
Linear Speed of Belt:

130 𝑥10−3 2 = 0.065

V = 240.9 x 0.065 = 15.7m/sec
Power Transmitted = Belt Tension x Speed
Power Transmitted – 6000w
6000w = T1 x 15.7

T1 = 600015.7
T1 = 382.2 N
T1/T2 = emU (m=0.3, U=130o or 2.27rad)
T1/T2 = emU
382.2/ T2 = e (0.3 x 2.27)
382.2/ T2 = 1.976

T2 = 382.21.98
T2 = 193 N

Average force at rest = 382.2+1932 = 287.6N

This is the force that the shaft must withstand when a 130mm diameter pulley at a speed of 2300
rev/min.
