Allow me to elaborate on the grounds negating the removal of Filipino as a College Core
Subject.

1. That in higher education, college students need to exercise higher order thinking skills and
deeper appreciation of their tertiary subjects. Apparently, the cognitive maturity of SHS students
and the College students differ. In such case, the lack of seriousness and immaturity of the SHS
students often lead to this core subject not being taken seriously. The Senior High School
Filipino Core Subject which is “Komunikasyon at Pananliksik sa Wika at Kulturang Pilipino”
aims to study on “research on the nature, character, development, use and use of Filipino
Language in Philippine social and cultural situations” demands higher levels of thinking and
maturity. Such Core subject must be given great importance as it enhances not just cognitive but
social development as well. Which is in line with CHEd’s main aim is to promote relevant and
quality higher education. Aside from the language, Filipino must be maintained and sustained in
the tertiary level as it enhances one’s ability to think. These core skills are great help even to the
advancement of one’s career.

Which leads me to my second argument.

2. That learning Filipino as a subject should not be stopped to the tertiary level. A proper grasp of
Filipino raises competence, promotes self-evaluation of a student aiming to be a professional.
The learning allows people to form a conceptual grasp of the learnings by properly registering
the thought to a language which they know of. Besides, there is no better way to bestow wisdom
and aphorisms than to hand it to the young generation in a language can easily put a grasp into,
where they can clearly comprehend the concepts.

Hence, the Filipino subject is not just a subject learned in school,
