Compressing and Editing PDF Files
There are many reasons to compress your PDF
files. Some files are too large to share as attachments.
Smaller files take less time to download and less time
to open. If you have a lot of PDF files then
compressing them can free up a lot of memory.
Before you start compressing, copy all of your
PDF files and store them on a spare hard drive or
similar. Sometimes something goes wrong. A file may
compress so much there is an unacceptable loss of
quality. or it may even be unreadable. If this happens,
you can go back to your original and try a different
compression system.
I use three different systems for PDF

PDF Compressor
Pros: PDF compressor can handle up to twenty
files at once. It shrunk the first version of this
document by 80%.
Cons: Size limit for each file appears to be about
30 Mb. May handle larger files if batch size is
reduced.
Some files PDF Compressor cannot handle.
These will either fail to complete uploading or will
not finish compressing. Make a note of the name of
these files and cancel their processing. Files that
cannot be processed by PDF Compressor usually
process with I♥PDF.
I♥PDF Compress Mode
Pros: Offers three different levels of
compression.
Usually handles PDF files that PDF
Compressor rejects.

Handles larger files than PDF Compressor.
Cons: Will only compress one file at a time.
Size limit of 170 Mb for registered users on the
free version.
Smallpdf.com
Pros: Will handle files larger than 170 Mb.
Cons: Free users are limited to processing only two
files within a given time period. Try closing down
your browser and coming back to the site.
Getting It Right: Other Resources
Three other programs may prove useful when
creating or modifying PDFs:
The first of these is JPdfBookmarks. You can
create bookmarks in your PDF by using the
“Headings” feature in your source document.
JPdfBookmarks allows you to edit bookmarks, create
additional bookmarks and link to places in a page
other than the heading. I used this extensively in my
book on knots.
The second program is jPDF Tweak. This has
numerous useful capabilities. You can change the
PDF viewer page numbering so that it matches that
printed on the page and in an index. It can also set
the configuration that a document opens in, useful if
you want the reader to be aware of the bookmarks
available. Have you downloaded a PDF where
different pages are vastly different in size? jPDF
Tweak can solve that problem.
PDFill Free PDF Tools is a collection of free
tools that may prove useful even if you do not create
PDFs. It allows you to quickly split or merge
documents, rotate pages, create PDFs from
collections of images and many other tasks. jPDF
Tweak also has a number of these capabilities but for
some jobs PDFill Tools is simpler and quicker.
PDF-Xchange Editor has become my default
PDF reader. It launches quicker than Adobe. It hangs
up and crashes much less than Adobe. Even the free
version comes with a really useful suite of tools for
modifying PDFs. Add OCR, deskew pages, add and
edit bookmarks, permanently rotate individual pages,
add logical page numbering, make comments and
much more.
