Essential Question
How do I identify and use text features to locate key facts and information?

Learning Objectives
Students will:

 observe the difference between a non-fiction book and a fiction book.

 discover the various features found in many non-fiction books.
Materials

 PowerPoint: Non-fiction Text Features
 Handout: Identifying Non-fiction Text Features
 Teach

The media specialist will open the non-fiction text features PowerPoint. She will then
ask students the following question:

 What is the difference between a fiction and a non-fiction Book?

Students will be given the opportunity to answer the question before the media
specialist explains to them that a fiction book is not true (make believe) and a non-
fiction book is true and contains factual information.

Media specialist will ask students the question below:

 Did you know that there are many features within a non-fiction book?

She will then go through the slides and introduce each non-fiction text feature, its
purpose, and its importance. At the end of the lesson, students will complete the
handout entitled “Identifying Non-fiction Text Features.”
