Shortlist
excitement By Meg Kennedy

A local author is in the running for one of the most prestigious

literary awards in Australia.
Wayne Marshall, of Bacchus Marsh, has been shortlisted in the
2019 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for his unpublished
manuscript, ‘Frontier Sport’.
Mr Marshall said it was an “incredible” feeling to be shortlisted
among some of Australia’s most prominent authors, which has
led to a significant interest from publishers and agents.
“It’s been such a roller-coaster of emotions since I first found out
about the shortlisting. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, that’s for
sure. And to be among such well-known and talented writers, it’s
a massive thrill,” he said.
Frontier Sport is a collection of ten stories.
“It is a range of what-if scenarios involving themes of Australiana,
which are taken to comedic and fabulist extremes...[for example],
in an alternate 1990s Melbourne, a sports theme park rises to
prominence,” Mr Marshall said.
“The key goal is the estrangement of the culture I’ve grown up
in, basically. To make it funny and magical and menacing and
absurd - all the things it was and is.”
Mr Marshall has been working on the collection for four years,
with stories published in Australian literary journals and
magazines such as Island, Going Down Singing, and Review of
Australian Fiction.
“Having stories published in these journals has given me
a massive boost in confidence and improved my writing
dramatically by working with editors,” he said.
A prominent member of the local literary scene, Mr Marshall is
a member of local writers’ group the Moorabool Writer’s Craft,
which he said has “helped [him] beyond words,” and commended
the Lerderderg Library, which he said has been “extremely
fortunate to have” in the community.
Mr Marshall noted the local literary events, including the
Moorabool Festival of Stories (which he co-founded) and the
annual Peter Carey Short Story Award, whose namesake remains
a huge influence on his writing.
“It’s a real thrill to be able to honour arguably the most famous
ex-Bacchus Marsh resident in the manner we are doing,” he said.
Mr Marshall’s advice to emerging writers in the local community
is simple: “read lots and write lots.”
“…When your work is ready, be brave and submit to the many
magazines and journals that publish stories. Also, the Peter Carey
Short Story Award in 2019 will for the first time be awarding a
prize for the best local entry. So be sure to enter,” he said.
Notable authors to previously take out the award include Jane
Harper ‘The Dry’ in 2015 and has been a guest judge at the Peter
Carey Short Story Awards in Moorabool.
The winners of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award will be
announced on 31 January 2019.

Stage-2 new streetscape

works commence
By Meg Kennedy

The makeover of Ballan’s town centre is now underway,

with new bench seats and car spaces the biggest additions to
Inglis St in the new year.
Commencing on Monday, 14 January, Stage-2 of Ballan’s
streetscape upgrade will see the south-side of Ballan -
between Cowie and Fisken Streets – continue the redesign
of Inglis St, which went under extensive upgrade works in
August last year.
The area will see the installation of 11 bench seats, nine new
parking spaces, five bins and three bicycle rails.
“In a growing community I am sure the nine extra car parks
will benefit both the traders and community,” said Mayor
Paul Tatchell.
“I would also like to acknowledge the business owners and
community members that gave up considerable time to assist
in the planning and design,” Cr Tatchell said.
Like previous works, the upgrade will include wider asphalt
footpaths; the replacement of hard surfaces and nature strips
with sawn bluestone paving; asphalt treatments; drainage
improvements; improvement to pedestrian safety, including
accessibility for road crossing points and disabled parking
bays; and the installation of electrical conduits and pits to
facilitate possible future conversion of overhead power to
underground.
Although the works will see three trees be removed from
the site, 15 trees will replace these.
Moorabool Shire Council says the removals “have been in
consultation with Council’s landscape consultants, and the
community reference group initially engaged during the
planning phase and council officers.”
The project is expected to cost $647,000 and construction
will be undertaken by Evergreen Civil Pty Ltd.
The streetscape works is expected to take six months to
complete, in a staged process to minimise disruption in the
area. From L-R - Project Director Jason Green, Mayor Paul Tatchell and Project Manager (Evergreen Civil) Dave Huxtable.

Facebook feedback Wow that is a very biased and heavy handed article. I suspect whom ever wrote it really
dislikes Gordon residents or has an interest in council. I for one looked at the original plans
and was a bit put out about the number of trees stated to be removed. Insinuating that
Gordon residents had somehow pulled this idea out of thin air to gain media attention is
disingenuous. I always thought it was the media’s job to present an unbiased and factual
account of issues.
- Tracey Quinn
I don’t know how residents misinterpreted the big red crosses labelled ‘existing trees to be
removed’ as being the removal of trees. Crazy!
- Matt Swards
The issue here is the lack of community consultation / awareness. I don’t know who is the
PR person for the council but it is apparent that they need to do more to make the community
aware of what the council is doing.

The current works have been in train for some time due to safety and drainage issues at the
intersection; the first consultation was held 21st Nov 2017 and the 23rd November 2017; the
second session was held 26th March and 28th March 2018; the intersection upgrade was then
put out on the “Have your Say” section of the MSC Website and advertised in the paper for
a number of weeks. There was a follow up meeting held 9th April to show the results of the
feedback from the physical sessions and the online feedback. Council held a Rural planning
meeting in November 2018 where people were invited to speak to the item………… A letter

Tabcorp Park Friday 11 January

Reunited 35-years on
Darley Under 17 Premiers 1983. (Below) at their 35 year reunion.

Friday 11 January, Tabcorp Park Melton Race 3, Winner: Rocknroll Noah (4). Trainer: Keith
By Robert Clarke Cotchin. Driver: Greg Sugars. Photo: Stuart McCormick HRV.

In 1983, the Darley Under 17 football team won the Central Highlands League Grand Final.
Coached by Tommy Edwards, they went through the entire season undefeated winning
most games by six goals. When it came to playing in the grand final, Tommy’s message was
simple.
“Just go out and play footy the only way we know how.”
But things didn’t exactly go to plan; they were losing by nine points with ten minutes to go
in the final quarter, and the pressure was on.
The boys ended up kicking five goals in eight minutes to win the game.
Following the win, most of the team never played football together again. Some of them
hadn’t seen each other for over three decades, so it was time to organise a reunion.
The night was organised by Sheldon Kirwan, who took on the huge job of contacting
everyone and opened his house to hold the reunion, where a great night took place.
A few team mates made the huge effort of traveling from interstate and out of the entire team
only three couldn’t make it due to other commitments. The night and day after consisted of
reliving the grand final, telling stories about funny moments that happened throughout the
season.
At the end of the night Tommy said that when he took on the coaching job, he never thought
in his wildest dreams he would be sitting around having a beer with the team 35 years later.
As the reunion drew to a close, everyone agreed that 35 years was too long, and they won’t
be waiting that long until their next one.
