Running head: RESEARCH BASED STRATEGIES AND LEARNERS IN THE CULTURALLY DIVERSE CLASSROOM

The 21st century classroom is one of the most diverse group of learners that we have seen

to date. Just as many other things change and adapt over time, as should the way educators teach

in their classroom. We as teachers need to be culturally responsive and open to helping the

diverse learners in our classrooms as the student population is ever so changing. There are many

resources available to teachers that can help with making sure our classrooms and teaching styles

are conducive to a culturally responsive classroom environment. The book titled From Discipline

to Culturally Responsive Engagement: 45 Classroom Management Strategies by Pinto (2016)

offers many research-based strategies that focus on a culturally responsive classroom and is one

that I have read many chapters in thought my course OTL-565. Using research-based strategies

is important because there are many other claims on the internet and in journals that are strictly

opinion based, which is fine for getting ideas and pondering, but they are not backed by any

scholarly research. Making sure that the information we draw upon is research based and peer

reviewed allows us to use the correct methods in our classrooms and we know that the

information has been tested and researched within the student population.

There are many blogs that exist in the education world where teachers can post and talk

about their ideas and experiences using certain methods in their classrooms, but we should not

solely base our curriculum around sites like these. Using academic research and statistic sites

like the National Center for Education Statistics and the US Department of Education can give

you accurate information. Much of the research that occurs for educational purposes comes from

researchers from universities around the world. Making sure that the research you chose is either

from a government entity or a university can make sure the data you are reading is credible and

peer reviewed.

One of the best education books I have found so far is titled What Successful Teachers

Do: 101 Research-Based Classroom Strategies for New and Veteran Teachers by Glasgow and

Hicks (2009). This book has strategies that are all research based and tested, and if offers great

insight on how to deal with all sorts of situations that may arise as a first-year teacher and one

who had taught for 30 years. Glasgow and Hicks (2009) state that “The new revised book has

some of the best strategies from the first book, along with many new strategies based on the

latest educational research” (p.3). For educators to keep evolving with students, research needs to

continue. Researchers at universities across the world understand the importance of a culturally

responsive classroom and will continue to do research to create new strategies and make the

current ones even better so teachers all around the world be create the best pupils that will soon

lead our countries.
