Spouse —  Influence of the Grahas

Saravali 34.45. If Jupiter, Moon, Venus and Mercury be in the 7th, in any manner (i.e. one of
them, two, three, or all of them in the 7th), or other divisions falling in the 7th House, or, if the
7th House be in aspect to these, one will procure a wife corresponding to the planet(s) and
Rāśi(s) in question.

 This is a straightforward dictum whereby influence of benefics Jupiter, Moon (strong in

paksha-bala), Venus or Mercury (well associated) on the 7H ensure that the native will not be
denied the happiness of a family life.

 Similarly the 7H in the Navamsa chart should be placed in a sign owned by one of these
benefics or they should be placed in the 7H in the Navamsa chart.

 The nature of the wife, her circumstances, family background, talent, mentality,
inclinations etc. can be known from the Graha influencing the 7H in the Rasi and Navamsa.

Destruction of Spouse
Saravali 34.46. (1) Should the 7th House contain malefics, or fall in malefic planets’ divisions,
the wife of the native will be destroyed (i.e. adversely affected). (2) These results can be deduced
from the Ascendant and the Moon, the stronger of them having more significance. (3) If the
Moon be in the 7th (from the Ascendant) along with Saturn, the native will marry a widow.

 For the purpose of marriage and relationships, the malefics are Saturn, Mars, Rahu and
Ketu. The nodes behave one of Saturn or Mars (shanivat rahu kujawat ketu). They are Tamas
in nature and their nature is to stay alone. They are airy and fiery in nature, none of which is
conducive for watery element, which is important in the relationship matters.

 Sun is not much detrimental to marriage as it is the ruler of Dharma. As long as the
Dharma is followed, Sun can’t become malefic. It also rules creation and the creation forces
can continue only when the dharma of marriage can continue.

 One of more of the mentioned malefics in the 7H is not conducive to marriage, especially
when they also afflict the Navamsa of the 7H. In addition, if the 7L and Karaka Venus are also
weak, the native does not get the opportunity to marry.

 Moon-Saturn combination in the 7H (in Rasi or Navamsa) can indicate marriage with a
widow. Similarly the joint effect of various Grahas need to be analyzed as well. For instance
Mercury-Jupiter indicate scholar, Jupiter-Ketu indicate spiritual or Vedic scholar etc.

 Here it is suggested to look at the 7H from both the Lagna and the Chandra Lagna. This is
a usual method of horoscope analysis, especially in the matters of relationship with other
members of the society as Moon is the Karaka of the society.
 Moon or the Lagna having more planets in the Kendra to them is to be considered to be
stronger among them.

Number of wives
Saravali 34.47. (1) The number of wives will correspond to the number of heavenly bodies
aspecting the 7th, or the Navāńśas past in the 7th House. (2) There will be a single wife, if Leo,
Aries, or Scorpio rise in Navāńśa, or, if Mercury and Jupiter join together in the 7th House.

 In certain culture and traditions more than one wife is allowed. However, in Hinduism
only one wife is allowed following the foot-steps of Lord Sri Rama (Eka-patni vrata).

 In addition, in current circumstances, people are also restricted by the Law. Hence, this
shloka needs to be evaluated from the perspectives of current circumstances (Desha-Kala-
Patra).

 Although the combinations which indicate multiple wives may not indicate multiple
marriages in current context, but they can indicate multiple relationships or at least
possibility of multiple marriages. In the cultures which allow multiple marriages, these
principles still apply.

 The number of Grahas placed in the 7H or aspecting the 7H in the Rasi chart indicate the
number of marriages. The same can be seen from the Number of Navamsas passed by the 7H.
This principle is similar to the principle of finding children from the Navamsa of the 5H.

 If Jupiter and Mercury conjoin in the 11H, they don’t indicate two wives as they indicate
commitment to one wife. This combination indicate upholding the dharma, hence they will
not allow Adharma.

 Aries and Scorpio Navamsas indicate Venus’s signs in the 7H, indicating the native will be
committed to his only wife and will not like to share his affection and love. Similarly Leo
Navamsa does not indicate 2 marriages as Sun rules that sign and Sun does not allow the
Adharma of two marriages to happen. Very much like Lion who is happy to have one Lioness
at any moment, to bear children and form the family.

Multiple wives
Saravali 34.48.(1) If the 7th House has many divisions of Venus and the Moon, or is occupied
by these two, there will be plurality of wives. (2) Specially Venus in the 7th will cause such an
effect.

 Moon and Venus are the two Jala Graha which are predominant with emotions and
emotional attachments. They cause relationships between two individual; Moon is the mother
while Venus is the sister or the wife. Men ruled by Mars and Sun by default are dry in nature
and are not very keen in relationship and letting anyone closer to their personal space.
 On the other hand, the watery Grahas ruling females bring people closer to each other
and tie them with social knots and strings. They also rule the emotions of love (Moon) and
lust (Venus).

 Influence of Venus or Moon or both on the 7H indicate that the native is highly emotional
and seek social company of others. They are romantic and want to be emotionally connected
with people. They seek long term commitment and not short-term relationship. They gain
comfort and solace in the company of others.

 Hence when they influence the 7H, such people are always lookout of good friends,
partners and soul mates. If they influence the 7H in many divisions such as Navamsa and
Drekkana as well, by being the lord of their signs or being placed there, their influence
multiplies manifold. In Navamsa, the 7H is mapped to the 7H itself (3–7–11) being part of the
Kama-Trikona (desire trine). This is true even in Drekkana.

 So in summary, if the 7H in the Rasi, Navamsa or Drekkana are influenced by Venus or

Moon in one of the following manner, the native will have many relationship (or be at least
inclined to have many), (1) 7H falling in Venus or Moon sign, (2) Venus or Moon placed in the
7H, (3) Venus or Moon conjoined the 7L

Spouse’s Caste
Saravali 34.49. (1) Jupiter and Venus related to the 7th House will confer a bride of the same
caste, while the Sun, Mars, Saturn and the Moon denote a female belonging to a mean order.
(2) As per Ketumalacharya, Venus and Moon related to the 7th House will cause relationship
with whores.

 With regards to the caste of the spouse, in the ancient times, the parents of the groom
used to be concerned about bringing a bride from a high social order. In the modern time, this
practice has lost its meaning and the true merit of a person is derived from his nature and
actions (Karma).

 In my humble opinion, one should look for nature spouse’s work instead of the social
order in which the spouse is born in.

 The Graha indicating marriage in the same of higher social order are Jupiter or Venus. On
the other hand, the Krura Graha Saturn, Mars and Sun indicate spouse belonging to a lower
social order (than the native).

 Sudra (servicemen, those who work for others)The social order is defined as Brahmin
(knowledge worker, scholars, teachers, professors etc) Kshatriya (those involved in protecting
the state, army, police etc) Vaishya (traders, business man, industrialists, involved in
independent volition etc)

 Brahmins are ruled by Jupiter and Venus, the two Gurus; Kshatriyas are ruled by fiery
Grahas Mars and Sun; Vaishyas are ruled by Jala & Prthvi Grahas Mercury, Venus and Moon;
while Sudras are ruled by remaining Saturn. Rahu rules outcaste (outside the social order)
and Ketu rules the renunciate monks (also don’t belong to the social order)
 Venus and Moon association in the 7H can make the native excessively passionate and
hence, it is mentioned that the native will have umpteen sexual relationships with prostitutes
and like. A strong lagna lord and 9H gives high ideals and protect one from all Adharma
(unrighteous acts)

Loss of wife due to Mars

Saravali 34.50–51. (1) Mars in the 7th House will make one go devoid of wife. (2) If he is,
while so posited in aspect to only Saturn, the wife will certainly pass away. (3) Should Mars
and Venus be together in the 7th, or 5th, or 9th, the native will beget a languid, or deformed
wife.

 Mars is not considered auspicious in the matters of relationship and marriage as Mars
governs Celibacy. When a celibate breaks his vows and falls for opposite sex, then his intensity
of passion can get out of control.

 Mars is said to cause Kuja Dosa in certain places from Lagna, Moon and Venus. This is a
vast topic, hence can’t be covered within few lines.

 We have seen in other places, Mars aspected by Saturn in any bhava destroys the living
relations pertaining to that Bhava. This is also True in this case. This principle can also be
extended to joint placement or aspect of Saturn and Mars on the 7H.

One-eyed Spouse
Saravali 34.52. (1) It is the unanimous opinion of all the sages, that, if the Moon and the Sun
are, respectively, in the 12th and the 6th, both the native and his wife will be one-eyed.

 It is not clear why the author of Saravali chose to give this verse among the various
combinations pertaining spouse. This is the only verse dealing with disabilities of the spouse.

 Perhaps he wants the reader to reflect upon the combinations that cause disabilities at the
time of determining various aspects of marriage and spouse.

 This combination involves 12H= Sun, 6H= Moon.

 Mansagari 337 mentions that if Moon is in the 2H, right eye is affected. If in 12H house
left eye is affected.

 Jataka Tattva 275 states that “If either of Sun or Moon occupy 6th or 12th house, the
native and spouse both are one eyed ”

 Following the direction of Mansagari, we know that Moon in the 12H cause troubles in the
left eye. When seen from the 7H, 12H is the 6H which should show left eye of the spouse.

 12H indicate left eye of the native. Graha in the 12H aspect the 6H and vice-versa. Sun in
the 12H cause eye diseases as well. Jataka Tattva 225 states Sun conjoined with malefics in the
 12th or a Trine cause defective eye sight. Jataka Tattva 258 states Sun-Moon occupy the 12th
house and devoid of benefic aspects cause blindness.

 From this we can conclude that Moon in the 6H cause eye diseases to one eye to the
spouse while Sun in the 12H cause eye diseases to one eye to the native. Aspect of the other
luminary endorses the eye disease.

 In my opinion, Jataka Tattva’s 275 statement regarding placement of one of the

Luminaries in the 6H or the 12H can cause eye troubles in one eyes in both the spouse.
Because the same luminary simultaneously influence the 12H (loss) from both Lagna (native)
and 7H (spouse).

 Sun and Moon are the ruler of the two eyes. Sun rules the right eye and Moon rules the
left eye in males. Similarly, 2H rules the right eye and 12H rules the left eye. This is reversed
for females i.e., Right eye= Moon, 12H and Left eye= Sun, 2H.

 Luminaries in the houses of disease (6H= affliction) or loss (12H= vyaya) indicate
affliction of the eyes due to injury or simply loss.

 Additionally, the 10H should be afflicted for the native as 10H governs eye sight. The
same can be said for 4H (10th from 7H) for spouse.

Barren Wife
Saravali 34.53. (1) If Saturn occupies the Ascendant, while Venus is in the 7th identical with
Ganda Rāśi and the 5th is bereft to beneficial aspect, the person acquires a barren wife.

 Wife is barren if the native is not destined to have happiness from children. If the 5H
indicate child-birth, then how can marry to a lady who is not able to give birth? Certain
combinations in a horoscope attracts other having certain combinations in their horoscopes
so that both say the same thing. This kind of synchronicity is beyond human intelligence and
even imagination. The world is indeed perfectly balanced! Say, if a person is to suffer misery
on account of child’s early demise, then only a child with low longevity be born to the native.

 In this case Saturn occupying the ascendant indicate some deep sorrow affecting the
native. Saturn indicate old age and lack of procreativity which marks the stage after
menopause. Saturn aspects the 7H from the Lagna indicating spouse can have challenges in
procreation. In addition, Karaka for marriage and relationship (Venus is courtship which is
the 1st stage in child-birth) is placed in Gandanta (last navamsa of watery signs and 1st
navamsa of Fiery signs) thus rendering it very weak. Weak Venus indicate lack of strength in
the semen or ovum to give birth to a child from the sexual act.

 In addition, 5H should be devoid of any benefic aspect that may promise child-birth
otherwise.

Devoid of Spouse and Children

Saravali 34.54–55. (1) One will be devoid of a wife and an issue, if malefics occupy the
Ascendant, 12th and 7th, while decreasing Moon is in the 5th. (2) Both the native and his wife
will be immoral, if the 7th House falls in the various divisions of Saturn and Mars, while Venus
is posited in the 7th in aspect to Mars and Saturn.

 Important houses of marriage, relationship and sex are

1. Lagna: Happiness in life including happiness from wife and children. Malefics here
indicate miserable life.

2. 7H: The house of relationship. The partner from the outside world walks into the native’s
life through this house. Hence, 7H is considered a doorway.

3. 12H: The house of sexual pleasure. Not all partners who walk into native’s life through
7H indicate sexual partners. Only some of them become the sexual partners. While the act of
sex is ruled by the 3H, Whether or not the native attains satisfaction from the act is to be seen
from the 12H. Malefic affliction to the 12H also indicate frigidity.

4. 2nd/8th: The quality of the married life is impacted by the 2nd house in males and 8th
house of females. One may note that these houses are also important for financial prosperity.

 In addition, waning Moon in the 5H indicate that the karaka of pregnancy Moon is weak
and the Bhava promising child birth is also weak.

 A committed married life is essential to a happy and prosperous society. Lack of

commitment between the parents make the child’s life lack stability and they grow up with
some scars in their memory.

 The combinations which promote lack of commitment is influence of Tamas Graha

Saturn or Mars on the 7H in Rasi and Navamsa. Saturn= Dirt and Mars= Violence. They
owning the 7H indicating that the native’s intentions behind marriage is not fulfil dharma
(Jupiter, Sun, Moon) but for fulfilling carnal desires. If the 7H is aspected by Jupiter or Sun,
they put stop to any adharma. Moon on the other hand although Sattva, but is highly
emotionally attached Graha, hence it indicate someone who fall in love often and is unable to
detach self from illegitimate relationships.

 Venus aspecting the 7H owned by Saturn or Mars and devoid of aspect of Jupiter or Sun
cause a situation where the person is after many women to fulfil is lust.

 Similarly, 7H Venus also indicate the spouse will be given to lust and is non committal in
relationship.

 Natives with this combination waste their life running after something that does not
satisfy them; a situation that does not lead to anywhere. What Karma the native would have
done to get a life which does not lead him towards his final destination and the entire life is
wasted!
Devoid of Spouse and Children
Saravali 34.54–55. (1) One will be devoid of a wife and an issue, if malefics occupy the
Ascendant, 12th and 7th, while decreasing Moon is in the 5th. (2) Both the native and his wife
will be immoral, if the 7th House falls in the various divisions of Saturn and Mars, while Venus
is posited in the 7th in aspect to Mars and Saturn.

 Venus is the Karaka for relationship and is the first step in attaining happiness from
marriage and children. Without having committed relationship, there can be no happiness
from marriage and children, hence Venus is such a key planet in this matter.

 Among the Grahas supporting relationship, Mercury is not favourable in this matters for
couple of reasons-

1. Mercury is friendship oriented Graha and not so much relationship oriented which
involve emotional and sexual attachment

2. It rules children frame of mind where the mind has not developed the sense of sexuality

3. Venus gets debilitated in a mercurial sign i.e., in Virgo (sign of celibacy) Venus feels that it
is trapped

 When Venus and Mercury conjoin in the 7H, Venus gets weakened due to Mercury’s
association, a state similar to debility. Mercury is also not conducive to relationship matters
being in the 7H. It promotes friendship more than relationship. Such native has many friends
but no committed relationships.

 However, if there is influence of other benefics, Jupiter or Moon who promote marriage,
the native marries, however, at a advanced age after much dilly-dallying. A lot also depends
on the sign where the combination is happening. If this happens in Pisces, Venus will prevail.
One should similarly think about other signs where Venus will prevail over Mercury.

Opulence
Saravali 34.56. (1) When the 7th House is occupied by Mercury and Venus, the native will be
bereft of both wife and progeny. (2) If however this combination receives the aspect of a
benefic, there will be obtainment of a wife at an advanced age.

 7th house is a key house of wealth. It is said that placement of the 2nd lord in the 7H
cause Srimanta yoga, a strong Dhana yoga, indicating blessings of SRI or Lakshmi.

 Moon carries the energies of the 2nd house as it is it’s Mulatrikona Bhava and Uccha
Bhava. It is the governor of good and current assets (fluid wealth). It’s placement in the 7H
brings the influences of the 2H on the 7H causing a yoga equal in energies to the Srimanta
yoga.

 Moon-Venus conjoined in 7H cause Yanavanta yoga (Jaimini) which gives luxuries and
comforts of all kind, good conveyances etc.. Venus is the Karaka of comforts and luxury goods
 as well as beauty products. Such native can earn from trade or business in female and beauty
products.

 Moon-Jupiter cause Gajakeshari. Jupiter being the karaka of wealth and savings, such
native are able to save much wealth. They also earn from trading of money (i.e., lending and
interests). This yoga also makes one famous as both Jupiter and Moon, the karaka for fame
will aspect the Lagna.

 Moon-Mercury conjunction can bestow wealth from trade and commerce as Mercury is
the karaka for that. The same yoga if influencing the 2H or 11H can cause loss, especially
waning Moon in the 2H (or 11H) and aspected by Mercury. In relationship matters, this can
indicate the person running after multiple relationships. Mercury in 7H indicate many friends
while conjunction of Moon indicate immoral relationships. Puranas mention that Mercury is
born as a bastard child due to immoral relationship of Moon with Tara, wife of Jupiter.

Good natured wife

Phaladeepika 16.20. (1) If the 7th house have sambandha with a benefic (conjunction or
aspect) and, (2) Its lord be endowed with strength, the wife of the person born will be
virtuously disposed, and will live happily with her husband, blessed with children and endowed
with all good qualities.

This is a general principle in any Bhava analysis. A bhava prospers under following
conditions-

1. Benefics in the bhava

2. Benefics aspecting the bhava

3. The Bhava lord placed in Kendra, Trikona, Labha

4. Kendra, Trikona lord placed in the Bhava or aspecting the Bhava.

5. The bhava lord is well placed in the Navamsa

6. The Navamsa dispositor of the bhava lord is well placed in the Rasi chart

Some important yogas from Dr. BV Raman’s Hindu

Predictive Astrology
Questionable moral character: 2nd and 6th lords have evil conjunctions and occupy the
6th house or afflicted 7th lord joins the Lagna.

 2L deals with the 2nd marriage and can be the cause disturbance in marriage due to
extramarital attachments. This is possible if the 2L associate with the 6L or 6H and the same
 time 7H is afflicted. This means that the native is looking for happiness through extra-marital
ties due to unhappiness in married life. Here 6H stands for weaknesses and fall of morality.

 7L influence in the lagna make the person relationship focused, obedience to wife or
subservience to women. If the 7L is afflicted and joins the Lagna, the hours or ideals, the
native may have low ideals pertaining to relationships.
Loose morals in early years: 7th lord joins Rahu or Ketu and aspected by Mars or Saturn,
and Venus is ill placed.

 Affliction of Venus (say association with 6H) can by itself indicate low morals. In addition
if 7L joins one of the nodes and aspected by one of Mars or Saturn, the native can have low
morals.

 It is not understood why only in early years. Perhaps, aspect of Saturn indicate that the
native can become disciplined when grow older.
Licentious, involved in clandestine pleasures: Evil planets occupy the Lagna and 6th
house.

 6H is the house of Shadripu or the 6 primary weaknesses. Ma= Krodha, Me= Matsarya,
Ve= Kama, Sa= Moha, Ra= lobha, Ke= Mada.

 Affliction of Lagna indicate fall in ideals. Similarly affliction to the 6H indicate

overwhelmed by one of the weaknesses (vices).
Immorality: Weak Moon joins a Malefic in the 7th house

 Moon rules the purity of mind and emotions. Affliction of the Moon indicate corruption of
the mind and emotions. If such Moon is placed in 7H, the native will lack discrimination in
the matters of relationships or in a way his emotions and relationships will not be pure.
Questionable moral character: Venus combines with the 2nd, 7th and the 6th lords and
occupies the ascendant.

 This combination is very similar to one mentioned above i.e., regarding association of 2L
and 6L and simultaneous weakness of the 7H. Here, the 2L and 6L are conjoining the 7L and
occupying the ascendant.

 I think the general rule is association of 2L and 6L with 7H or 7L and involvement of

lagna in some or other way. The weakness of the lagna indicate fall of ideals.
Highly passionate: Venus in the 7th house.

 All classics are unanimous in saying that Venus in the 6H makes the person highly
passionate.

 But this does not mean that the person will get into extra marital affairs unless other
factors such as 2L and 6L etc. associate with the lagna.
Inclined towards secret pleasures: Afflicted Mercury and Venus in the 7th house.

 Mercury with either Venus in the 7H under affliction cause serious problems with regards
to relationship matters.
 BV Raman also says that when weak Moon joins a Malefic in the 7th house cause
immorality.

 Mercury is a trader and believes in buying and selling things. This is not however a good
attitude in the matters of relationships.
Passionate, seek unnatural sources of gratification: Mars, Mercury and Venus in the
7th house devoid of benefic aspects. Also, Jupiter is not in a Kendra.

 Jupiter in strength especially in a Kendra is a great protection against any kind of fall of
morals and ideals. Kendra have strong bearing on one’s action.

 If Jupiter does not influence the Lagna or other Kendra, then confluence of any of the
combination of Mars-Venus, Mercury-Venus or Mercury-Moon can cause high lust and even
perversion.

 I am not sure if the same can be said for Mars-Mercury which gives a irritable disposition
nevertheless.
Highly principled and chaste in sexual matters: Jupiter in the 7th house or the 10th
house with no malefic aspects.

 Jupiter in 10H and 7H (10th from the 10th house) makes the person engaged in exalted
karma

 The same can be predicted if Jupiter can be placed in any karma including 4H and Lagna.
Wife dies during pregnancy: 5th lord in the 7th house, 7th lord is with malefics and Venus
is weak.

 Weakness of 7L and Venus indicate loss of spouse.

 The cause of loss can be indicated by the Graha associating. 5H or 5L associating indicate
child-birth. In females 9H is associated with pregnancy.
Only one marriage (1): 2nd and 7th lords are in their own houses.

 We observed before that affliction of 2L by association with 6L and afflicting the lagna or
7H cause extramarital affairs.

 However, the strength of 2H and 7H indicate that the person will be committed to family
and home and progressing own lineage.

 Thus 2L and 7L in own bhavas protect the only marriage. The same can be said when 2L
and 7L are placed in strength otherwise and not associate with 6L.
Only one marriage (2): 7th lord is powerful and exalted, occupying the Lagna.

 It is not possible for any 7L to be exalted in the lagna for any lagna.

 However, if 7L is placed in strength in lagna, then the native is committed to one

marriage.

 It is said before weak 7L in Lagna indicate questionable moral character.

Possibility of two marriages: 7th house falls in a evil sign or the 7th lord joins its debility.
 Weakness of 7L indicate due to placement in debility can cause death or separation of the
spouse, compelling the native towards 2nd marriage

 This can also be said if the 7L is afflicted due to placement in dusthana or conjunction of
dusthana lords
Multiple marriages: 7th and the 12th lord is Venus and occupies the 9th house aspected by
Saturn.

 This applies to Sc Lagna as Venus becomes the lord of 7H and 12H.

 Venus placed in the 9H in Cancer and aspected by 3L and 4L Saturn. I think Venus in
Cancer is not weak as Moon is not inimical to any Graha. Saturn could aspect from one of the
houses 3H, 7H or 12H.

 Need to verify which position of Saturn will cause this combination for multiple
marriages.
Two marriages: 7th lord is in 6th house aspected by Rahu and devoid of benefic conjunctions.

 Yet another combination where affliction of the 7L due to placement in a dusthana and
simultaneous affliction by another malefic (primarily Saturn or Rahu) cause more than one
marriage due to death of separation of the 1st wife.
Endowed with marital happiness: 7th lord and the 10th lord exchange houses and the lord
of the 2nd occupies a benefic Navamsa.

 10L is important in the matters of marriage as it’s derived bhava (bhavat-bhavam) falls in
the 7H. In addition, strength of 2L makes the native committed to family.

 Thus association of 7L and 10L while 2L placed in strength makes the person happiness
form marriage and family.
Liaison with barren women: Sun is in the 7th house.

 Sun’s influence on the 7H or 7L indicate barrenness of wife (spouse). But don’t conclude
this unless other influences are judged.
Sexual contact with the maidservant: Moon in the 7th house debilitated.

 This is the specific combination for Taurus Lagna.

 Moon is the 3rd lord and its debilitation in the 7H indicate fallen mindset in sexual
matters. 3H= root of sexual thoughts (Duschikya bhava, Mithuna bhava).

 Here the Graha of emotions is debilitated (fallen) in the bhava of relationship.

Intercourse with an immature girl: Mars in the 7th house devoid of benefic aspects.

 To be verified.

 This principle could have been applicable in ancient time when child marriage was
practiced. In my opinion, such effect may not be seen in current age.

 In my opinion one should not base one’s judgment on such simplistic principles as many
other factors affect person’s morality such as disposition of Lagna, 2H, 3H, 4H and 7H.
