César Estrada Chuquilin

César Estrada is a human rights defender from Peru. He is a journalist and a member of the Red
de Comunicadores Indigenas del Perú – REDCIP (Network of Indigenous Communicators in
Peru).
He has reported on several human rights violations concerning land disputes in his native
region and environmental issues related to the Conga Mining Project in the region of
Cajamarca. Indeed, the soil of his region contains valuable minerals which atract many
international investors.
César Estrada's work highlighted the lack of consultation of local indigenous communities on
mining projects. The opposition of these communities to these projects has led to repression
from State authorities and private security groups.

Owing to his human rights work, César Estrada and his family has been attacked in several
occasions. He survived an assassination attempt in 2015 and has sufferedsmear
campaigns, harrassement and surveillance.
He has also been a victim of judicial harassment and he's currently being accused of the
kidnapping of a business woman, theft and financial irregularities.

In recognition of his courageous work, César Estrada was awarded the Martine Anstett prize in
2016.
