ENVHR-21 Plant Propagation Spring 2019 CSU
5701 MW 5:30 PM-7:45 PM 3.0 J. Delsol W-402
Catalog/Class Schedule Description:
Principles and practices in prorating plants; cuttings, budding,
grafting, layering, division, separation, and tissue culture; seed
and asexual propagation will be covered, as well as contemporary
commercial techniques of propagation.
Facilities Information:
Our Horticulture facility includes a Greenhouse and shade house
with additional outside growing grounds. Student projects are
encouraged to enhance their learning experience. We are also
working with the Yolo County Master Gardeners (plant sales,
display gardens, workshops, etc.) Students are encouraged to
participate in these activities and gain possible extra credit.
Assignments may vary at times to take advantage of seasonal
changes that effort propagation opportunities.
We will be growing vegetables in our newly built hydroponic unit
and aquaponics units. New units may also be constructed during
class and outside of class time. You will be required to select a
topic of propagation.
Example: Layering and present orally with a board or power point
presentation on the topic chosen.
Other:
Chapter units described in Course Outline follow text: ● Secrets of
Plant Propagation by Hill Power Point presentations will usually
be from:
● Plant Propagation by Hartman & Kester
● Plant Identification information: Sunset Western Garden
Book

Course Student Learning Outcome:

1. Students will master the common techniques utilized in a

commercial propagation setting. Students will demonstrate the
ability to assess plant types and decide the most effective
propagation method.
2. Students will apply concepts of plant structure and function of
the processes of plant growth and reproduction by performing
correct propagation methods common in Horticulture.
Describe: Students will complete a project that includes
options for propagation and different plant types.
Critical Thinking
1. Explain the effect of temperature, water, humidity, and fertility
on plant growth.
2. Describe the principles of plant reproduction, sexual and
asexual.
3. Determine the proper timing for the various propagation and
production techniques appropriate to the plant and
propagation method.
Student Responsibilities:
● Be on time for class and take breaks when scheduled
● No one is allowed in class except registered students
● Clean up after class labs before leaving
● Notify instructor if emergency and cannot attend class
● Follow all safety procedures and report to instructor for
any injury

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY REMINDER:
Woodland Community College values academic honesty. Current
policies prohibit dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism, or
knowingly furnishing false information to the college. All members
of the academic community are responsible for the academic
integrity of the campus. Students are reminded that they may
work together on assignments, but all work submitted by a
student must be the original work of the student. Students are
required to take exams without any outside assistance. This
includes notes, lectures, other individuals, or any other outside
material.
CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!
The minimum that will happen is that you will receive a zero on
the assignment. Further information on academic honesty can be
obtained from the Student Code of Conduct. A copy may be
obtained from the Registration Office.
Strategies for a successful student:
Times and dates can change but usually posted on campus
bulletin board during each semester.
Tutoring Center: Room 809 Mon-Thurs: 9:00AM-5:00PM
Academic Reading Center: Room 870 Fri: 9:00AM-12:00PM
● ATTEND CLASS AND BE PREPARED!
Attendance to all lectures and labs is expected. Any topic covered
in lecture is fair game on a test. Missing lectures and labs will
severely hamper your ability to succeed in this class.
● BE ACTIVE DURING CLASS
Stay active in the learning process. Ask questions during lecture.
Stop instructor if they speak too fast or don’t explain a concept
well enough. If you have a question, it is almost certain that
someone else in the class has the same question. Instructors
encourage you to speak up when recognized. The more
interactive the class is, the more fun it is for everyone.
● ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Not allowed. If caught using an electronic device, the first time is a
warning. If caught a second time, students will be excused from
class for the class period.
● DEVELOP GOOD STUDY HABITS
Attending lecture and reading the text is only the beginning point.
Use flash cards, outlines, study groups or whatever tools
necessary to succeed. Learning is an active process. Observe,
Practice, and Reflect. Plan a study outside of class EVERY
WEEK. Have fun with it.
● TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR INSTRUCTOR
If a student is unclear on a concept, confused, confused by
something the instructor has said in lecture, need help with a
question or simply if you are interested in something discussed in
class. CONTACT INSTRUCTOR. They try their best to be as
available as possible. They will make effort to answer any
questions as clearly and promptly as possible. If class time is too
short to address any student’s question, please feel free to email
instructor.
● BE COURTEOUS TO YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS
Please keep cell phones off or on silent in lecture and labs.
Please do not text during class. The instructor knows you are
doing it and it is distracting to other students. If a student arrives
to class late, enter quietly without disrupting the lesson or other
students who are trying to learn. In general, treat others with the
respect you would like to be treated with.
Any Students needing accommodations should inform the
instructor.
Students with disabilities who believe that may need
accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact disabled
Students Programs and Services (DSPS) at (530)661- 5797, as
soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are
implemented in a timely fashion. Some of the support services
offered are academic assessment, counseling, course studies,
adaptive computer technology lab, note taking and testing
accommodations.
