Foreword
This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Petroleum Fuels
under the authority of the Industry Standards Committee on Petroleum and Gas.
MS 118 consists of the following parts, under the general title Motor vehicle gasoline -
Specification:
The above Parts 2, 3 and 4 of MS 118 are the current standards in the series. However, MS
118: Part 1:1996, Specification for motor vehicle gasoline: Part 1: Leaded gasoline (Third
t
en
revision) had been withdrawn without replacement.
During the development of this standard, reference was made to the ASEAN Automotive
m
Federation requirements. However some specifications had been excluded.
om
Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

1 Scope
This Malaysian Standard specifies the requirements for unleaded gasoline (Euro 5) suitable for
use in spark ignition engines for motor vehicles. The material is also known as petrol in the
automobile industry.
2 Normative references
Refer Annex A.
3 Grade
t
en
The unleaded gasoline (Euro 5) shall be graded into two categories, which are Unleaded
Regular 95 (ULG 95) and Unleaded Premium 97 (ULG 97).
m
om
4 Composition and properties
4.1 The motor gasoline (Euro 5) shall consist of volatile hydrocarbons free from visible
moisture, suspended matter and sediment. It may contain small amounts of additives intended
C
4.2 The motor gasoline (Euro 5) shall be coloured red for ULG 97 and yellow for ULG 95 (as
regulated by the regulatory body). Colouring matter (dye) is added for safety reason, grade
ub
4.3 The motor gasoline (Euro 5) shall comply with the requirements set out in Table 1 when
rP
5 Sampling
5.1 Sampling from storage tanks
Sampling of the material shall be carried out in accordance with the procedure described in
ASTM D4057.
Sampling cans (tin-plated) shall be of 5 L and 1 L capacity. Their construction shall comply with
the appropriate safety requirements for cans that are to hold highly flammable material.
A stock of cans shall be kept solely for the purpose of taking unleaded gasoline samples. Such
cans shall be clearly identified and kept separately from cans not used for the purpose of taking
samples of unleaded gasoline.
New cans shall be rinsed with unleaded gasoline (Euro 5) before being used to remove any
residual traces of oil left during manufacturing operations and then allowed to dry. Before use,
all cans shall be checked to ensure they are sound and free from leaks. A petroleum-resistant
sealing washer in good condition shall be positioned in the cap.
5.2.3 Procedure
From the pump nozzle, 5 L of unleaded gasoline (Euro 5) shall be carefully drawn into the 5 L
can using a clean dry funnel. Immediately afterwards, this sample shall be carefully decanted
into the requisite number of 1 L cans using a funnel, filling the cans to approximately 95 % of
their capacity (for safety reason). If more than 5 L are needed the operation should be repeated
t
en
immediately. The screw caps shall be fully tightened immediately and the cans shall be checked
to ensure that there are no leaks.
m
The sampling procedure shall not be carried out in direct sunlight, if at all possible.
om
5.2.4 Sampling for Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP)
In order to avoid escape of light components in the sample, the sampling container shall be
cooled and maintained at 0 °C during and after sampling.
C
Gasoline copper corrositivity is sensitive to sunlight and the metal it comes in contact with. If
lic
testing of copper corrosion is required, it is recommended that the sample be collected in a dark
glass bottle.
ub
Full and legible information relating to the source of the sample shall be attached to the can in
such a manner that it will not easily become detached subsequently.

NOTE. Other test methods as specified in Annex B for determining the properties may be used, provided that they have been demonstrated to
give the same degree of accuracy as the test methods listed. In the event of a dispute, the test method listed in this table is to be the referee
method.
