BSN IV-A

Reflection
Having Organization and Management course is very helpful in BSN program. At the end
of this course, we are now able to differentiate Management to Leadership. Management are the
process of leading and directing an organization to meet its goals with appropriate resources.
Leadership on the other hand is the act of influencing and motivating a group of people to act in
the same direction towards achieving a common goal. The essence of leadership involves the
power to motivate and influence people. This power can be wielded positively to engage others in
worthy action, or negatively through coercion or punishment. We can be a manager at the same
time become a leader. Having the skill of a manager and leader, we are able to have a better
outcome and achieve our goals. During our duties, we are able to apply these two. Having the
concept of Leadership and Management is very helpful in implementing it in the area, which also
helps us to become efficient nurse manager.
One of my weakness is Time Management, we all know that typical student today is lack
in time management, which decreases our productivity. This is true. We tend to finish our
requirements the day before due date, which also decrease the quality of the output. Through this
course, I tried my best to manage my time. I applied some technique such as listing all the tasks
you need to finish for the day, which is very helpful in accomplishing the tasks. I am also currently
using a planner that acts as a reminder for me of the tasks to accomplish in a week or month. In
clinical duty, we used a sheet of paper, we write there what activity we need to and at what time it
needs to be done. I hope this weakness becomes strength in the future.
The type of leader I want to be in the future is Transformational leader. Transformational
leadership style includes emotional intelligence. As a future nurse, we have different roles to be, a
caregiver, teacher, patient advocate, and a leader. As a nurse, we should be self-aware of our
strengths, weakness and limitations. My weaknesses include communication and my strengths
include problem solving and using critical thinking skills. I am not afraid to ask for input, help
from others, or others opinions regarding issues. I value other’s feedback and enjoy listening to
other’s perspectives on subjects that I may have not entertained yet. I believe that if I complain
about an issue, I also need to provide a suggestion to resolve the problem. Communication must
be consistent, concise, and knowledgeable of the subject whether it be policies and procedures,
pathophysiology, or patient care. A significant portion of communication is active listening skills.
As a nurse, we should assist patients with making informed decisions regarding their healthcare
and advocate for them of their wants and needs. We explain, educate, and encourage rather than
instructing or directing them of what to do. Patients often feel as though they have no control and
they are at our mercy, but assisting them to make educated decisions is empowering and crucial to
their healthcare experience. Transformational leaders are able to motivate beyond expectations
through their ability to influence attitudes.
I believe that if a leader wants respect, they must treat their followers with respect and
demonstrate that they have the best interest of the organization and followers in mind. A great
leader inspires, empowers, and encourages. Leadership is successful when followers are inspired
to do their best, strive for excellence, and follow suite.
