TRANSVERSE WAVES: FREQUENCY OF VIBRATION

Experiment #108

ANALYSIS

We can define transverse wave as a wave that is passing through something, it contains of
oscillations that strikes vertically or right angled to the way of energy transfer. Whenever the
transverse wave is passing through the x-axis way, the oscillation of it are said to be in upward
and downward track that will be in the y-z plane.

The civil engineering students from the institution of Mapua University, conducted an
experiment about the transverse waves: frequency of vibration. In the experiment that has been
done, the experimenters will able to know the relativity of velocity, frequency and wavelength.
As we know that transverse wave is hard to identify, the experiment will demonstrate a
standing wave where its form is a vibrational form that had been shaped within a material while
the vibration frequency of the foundation grounds reproduced waves from one end of the
material to restrict with occurrence waves from the source.

In conducting the experiment, students need materials to full perform the activity. These
materials are 1piece of string vibrator, 1 piece of sine wave generator, 2 pieces of iron stand
with clamp, 1 piece of pulley, 1 set of weights, 1 mass hanger, 1 piece extension cord, 1 piece
meter stick and 5 pieces of guitar string. Each materials will play a significant role in the study
to fully understand the idea of transverse waves.

In doing the study, we perform the activity by first is setting up the apparatus that will be
needing in the said experiment and by this the experimenters linked the sine wave generator to
the string vibrator, and after it, a guitar string will be attached in it and we are going to use
different king of guitar string, different diameter of guitar strings that will be used for at least
five trials and then will gather all the data that is needed to analyze the experiment, and by this
we will setting it up with a constant frequency that was happen by regulating the amplitude
and the frequency of the sine wave generator. The experimenters then reached a constant
frequency of 116 Hz. All of the data that will gather in the experiment will be a big help for
the students to achieved the main objectives of the experiment.

After setting up the experiment, the experimenters did the procedures that the laboratory
manual introduced so that they can gather all of the data they are needing. The experimenters
did the experiment with 5 trials and with 5 different strings that is attached through the
apparatus. Also, the experimenters did the said activity according to the laboratory manual,
they followed all the procedures that are indicated in the manual to have a better result in the
said experiment. All of the gathered information is recorded to a data sheets.
CONCLUSION:
We can call a waves that the every substance of the matter are moving along direction
perpendicularly to the track that waves moves as a transverse waves. These transverse waves
are constantly categorized by element wave being abrupt to wave motion. As per we studied
about the idea of transverse waves, we have gathered all the data that is needed in the study
and as the experimenters, we can conclude that the tension is directly proportional to the
frequency and inversely proportional to the number of segments. If the this thing called tension
are increasing, we can conclude that frequency will also increase in value and by such, we
notice that tension will also increase in amount and on the other hand, we can conclude that
the number of segments will. Hence, by the result of the experiment, the idea that linear mass
density is directly proportional and has relationship to the number of segments and inversely
proportional to the frequency. Experimenters did all the procedures that the laboratory manual
indicated to have a better result experiment. They settled all the apparatus and did all the
procedures to have a data that is accurate to the experiment that has been done. We can
conclude that the main objective of the study has been achieved, the experimenters are able to
examine the relations among the tension in the string, and the frequencies of vibration needed
to make a "standing wave" on the string. And also, through these dimensions the experimenters
are also able to make a measurement of the linear mass density of the string being vibrated.
After the experiment, we, the experimenters are able to determine the idea of transverse waves.
