Abbey kicks off ‘World of Difference’ tour

By Meg Kennedy

Young Bacchus Marsh business owner Abbey Kick is trading salon

clippers for shovels and school supplies.
The 24-year old recipient of the 2017 Ballan & District Chamber of
Commerce Business Excellence ‘Young Achiever Award’, will lead a
humanitarian tour of Cambodia and Laos this March—a two-week
journey which includes volunteering at local schools, providing bikes
for children, and aiding with water filtration in local villages.
The trip is a passion project for Ms Kick that has been years in the
making.
After embarking on a Rotary International ‘World of Difference’
humanitarian tour of Cambodia in 2014, she wanted to continue
making a difference, even after purchasing Amber Hair Studio in
Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.
“…When I purchased my business, I was forced to step back from
taking trips. Instead we have funded two children to be fed and
schooled for the past three years, and funded maintenance of pipes
for rain water harvesting,” she said.
“I was always planning to head back to the country and lead more
tours with World of Difference, I just finally know it is the right time.”
As well as humanitarian work, the 12-day trip will include tours
of ancient temples and ruins, visiting local markets, learning about
spirituality and Buddhism, and witnessing a ‘march of the monks’ at
sunrise.
On what she hopes attendees will take away from the trip, Ms
Kick said she “really hopes the attendees walk away with a greater
understanding of the world.”
“I really [want attendees] to appreciate how awesome our country
lient: Cross Roads Trading and local community are…we have so many amazing opportunities

of,” she said.
“It would be incredible if we could create life-long relationships with
attendees, who will continue to visit, sponsor or even spread the word
of our tour and organisation, which is our ultimate goal.”
The Cambodia and Laos trip will run from 16 March - 28 March 2019.
The total cost is $3,299, includes flights, twin-share accommodation,
meals, travel insurance and transport.

Explore the forests,

never been easier
A new smartphone app to encourage the community to get out and about
in our local state parks and forests, is now available on both iPhones and
Android devices.
The ‘More to Explore’ interactive app covers state forests across Victoria,
including the Lerderderg State Park and Wombat State Forest in Moorabool,
and displays areas of recreational interest such as campsites, picnic
grounds, walking trails and other outdoor activities.
“The app has been designed to help users navigate when out in the forest
to find trails and sites that suit their needs and interests…it allows you to
plan your visit before even leaving the house, using the search function to
find the idea state forest site or trail,” said Grampians Assistant Chief Fire
Officer Tony English.
“If visiting areas likely to be out of mobile phone range or with limited
mobile reception, explorers can download maps onto a mobile device, to
enable offline navigation and location on the map using the device’s GPS
function,” he said.

Pykes Creek Reservoir has reopened for all recreational
water activities after Southern Rural Water received results
confirming bacteria (E.coli) levels had returned to normal.
The Reservoir was closed on January 2 due to elevated levels
of the bacteria present in the water, which remained high for
12 days.
SRW believes the E.coli was an environmentally occurring
strain that ‘blooms’ in suitable conditions, and is awaiting
final results to confirm if such blooms pose any public health
concerns.
Edward Smith, Manager, Water Supply West, said the
Reservoir is currently holding 16,000 million litres and has a

“It is important to note that Pykes Creek Reservoir is a large,

the ‘go to’ combination for playing coach Mike Alexander as
the two contributed 49.1 of the 77.1 overs that included an
economical 11 maidens with no extras.
It was the first time this season the bowling group had
recorded a clean sheet on the extras front which delighted
the coach given his recent comments regarding the teams
patchy form.
‘We had a really good day, Hasi (Wickramasinghe) and
Longhurst were outstanding with the ball,” Alexander said.
“We spoke about bowling with more consistency and to our Captain Shane Newton knocks the ball onto the stumps for

day which was terrific......
“Our post tea session was particularly good when the game
was in the balance, we really took it up to them,” he said.
The onus now lies with the Lions batting group to see out
this run chase, their spasmodic returns with the bat would
suggest this game is far from over. Despite failing in their
previous two run chases in Rounds 10 and 11, the Lions
should feel some comfort knowing they have been successful
in four of their seven run chases this season.
The middle order especially will be hoping to stand up on
Saturday. The fate of the Lions and their season aspirations
will depend on it. Inevitably, the wash-up will determine
one of two scenarios for the Lions. Win and stay alive or
lose - season over.
It should be an enthralling afternoon of cricket as Day two
of action concludes at Darley Park this Saturday.
Play starts from 1pm.
