SUBJECT MATTER: PORTRAITS
 1. PORTRAITS BY OTHER ARTISTS DURATION: Two Lessons
Students will-
- View the portraits of the Mona Lisa, works including self portraits by
Modigliani, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, North American Indians, Byzantine
church murals, Monet and Degas
- Discuss the characteristics of the visuals including face shape, realism,
colour, definition of a portrait ( body, torso and head or shoulder and head
portrait ), eye shape, hair that is made up of’ hairs ‘, underlying bone
structure that connects the brow to the nose, the M of the top lip and the
position on the face of each feature

2. VIEWING OUR OWN FACE Continue

Students will-
- Use a hand mirror to view their own face
- Identify characteristics of their face eg. Colour of eyes hair and lips,
shape of face, large or small eyes, nose and mouth
- Respond to the teachers inquiries about their face

3. PRE DRAWING OUR FACE Continue

Students will-
- Use A4 artpaper in portrait format and graphite pencil to draw their own
face referring to their mirror
- Complete the drawing before choosing appropriate coloured pencils to
colour the eyes, lips, hair and skin
- Finish the drawing by colouring the whole portrait
- Discuss if the mirror made it easier and if they were happy with their
drawing

4. PRINTING OFF THE TABLE DURATION: Five Lessons

Students will-
- Discuss and draw a face and neck shape in pencil on the classroom table
- Use a premixed skin colour in acrylic paint to paint in the face /neck shape
- Print the face off as a monoprint onto a large A2 piece of artpaper
- Use brown oil pastels when the work is dry to place a dot in the middle of
the face to give a starting point
- From that dot draw the eyes to the side recognising that eyes have a
‘leaf”shape and eyelids and eyeballs
- Make another dot halfway between the eyes and chin for the nose and
another halfway again for the mouth
- Draw the nose by considering their brow and feeling the lines, and the
mouth by recognising the M shape
- Continue with the portrait adding ears, eyebrows etc using oil pastel
 5. DECORATING THE PORTRAIT Continue
Students will-
- Glue strands of cut wool onto the portrait as hair
- Add found objects such as beading or clothing buttons, earrings or fabric
- to portray clothing
(teacher will spray the works with a fixative)

6. PEER CRITIQUE
Students will-
- Look at each others work and discuss what they “liked” about their
classmates portraits
- Talk about the process of making the works
- List the Media used

7. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC COLLAGES DURATION: Two Lessons

Students will-
- Look at portraits that are not realistic and have an element of fantasy in
them
- Select a landscape photo page from a National Geographic magazine and
discuss the large shapes on the page
- Using old magazines cut out a pair of eyes, eyebrows, a nose and a mouth
- Collage these onto the landscape page in the formation of a face
- Mount the work on black card
- Discuss the differences to our other portraits
