Keeping Standards up-to-date

Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and
systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and
new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued.
Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves
they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which
may have been published since the Standard was purchased.
Detailed information about joint Australian/New Zealand Standards can be found by
visiting the Standards Australia web site at www.standards.com.au or Standards
New Zealand web site at www.standards.co.nz and looking up the relevant Standard
in the on-line catalogue.
Alternatively, both organizations publish an annual printed Catalogue with full
details of all current Standards. For more frequent listings or notification of
revisions, amendments and withdrawals, Standards Australia and Standards New
Zealand offer a number of update options. For information about these services,
users should contact their respective national Standards organization.
We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially
encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or
ambiguities. Please address your comments to the Chief Executive of either
Standards Australia International or Standards New Zealand at the address shown
on the back cover.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 95266.

THE C AP AND P IN TYP E

2.1 GENERAL
This Section applies to string insulator units of the cap and pin type, with either ball and
socket couplings or clevis and tongue couplings, with insulating parts of ceramic material
or glass, intended for a.c. overhead lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1000 V and a
frequency not greater than 100 Hz, such overhead lines being in lightly polluted areas and
moderately polluted areas. It applies also to insulators of similar design used in substations.
For string insulator units for use on overhead lines in areas characterized by very heavy
pollution levels and for other particular or extreme environmental conditions, it may be
necessary for certain dimensions to be changed and insulator units having different

creepage distances, spacing and forms may be preferred (such as flat profile, hemispherical
etc.). Insulators for use on d.c. systems may also need different dimensions. Standardized
mechanical characteristics and coupling sizes should be retained.
The objective of this Section is to prescribe specified values for the mechanical
characteristics and for the main dimensions of string insulator units of the cap and pin type.
NOTES:
1 Wet power frequency, lightning impulse and puncture impulse withstand voltages are not
specified characteristics of string insulator units.
2 For the definition of pollution levels see AS 4436.

2.2 CHARACTERISTICS
String insulator units of the cap and pin type shall be standardized by the following
characteristics:
(a) Electromechanical or mechanical failing load.
(b) Specified maximum diameter of the insulating part.
(c) Nominal spacing.
(d) Nominal minimum creepage distance.
(e) Nominal coupling.
The corresponding values shall be as indicated in Tables 2.1 and 2.2.
Except for nominal spacing, the tolerances for dimensions indicated in AS 2947.1 shall be
applicable to all nominal values including nominal maximum diameter and nominal
minimum creepage distance values given in Tables 2.1 and 2.2.
Nominal spacing tolerance shall be—
±(0.03P + 0.3) mm
where
P = nominal spacing expressed in millimetres.

2.3 DESIGNATION AND MARKING

String insulator units shall be specified by the letter U followed by a number indicating the
specified electromechanical or mechanical failing load in kilonewtons (see Tables 2.1 and
2.2).

COPYRIGHT
7 AS/NZS 2947.2:2002

THE LONG R OD T YP E

3.1 GENERAL
This Section applies to string insulator units of the long rod type with insulating parts of
ceramic material and with external metal fittings intended for a.c. overhead lines with a
nominal voltage greater than 1000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. The smallest
standard insulator unit has a lightning impulse withstand voltage of 125 kV. It applies also
to insulators of similar design, used in substations.
This Section is also applicable to string insulator units for use on overhead lines situated in
lightly polluted areas, the creepage distances given in Table 3.1 having been established
accordingly. In some very lightly polluted areas, however, shorter creepage distances may

be used and in heavily polluted areas it may be necessary to use longer creepage distances.
In either case, the mechanical characteristics and the lengths (L 2 ) (see Clause 3.2) should be
used unless the need for exceptionally long creepage distances requires values of L 2 greater
than those given in Table 3.1.
NOTES:
1 This Section may be applied to insulators for use on d.c. overhead lines.
2 The application of this Section to insulators of other materials is under consideration.
3 This Section is not applicable to insulators for electric traction lines which use special metal
fittings.

3.2 CHARACTERISTICS
String insulator units of the long rod type shall be standardized by the following
characteristics:
(a) Lightning impulse withstand voltage.
(b) Wet power frequency withstand voltage.
(c) Mechanical failing load.
(d) Nominal minimum length (L 1 ) between metal parts.
(e) Nominal coupling length (L 2 ) of the insulator.
(f) Nominal maximum diameter of the insulating part.
(g) Nominal minimum creepage distance.
(h) Standard coupling.
The corresponding values shall be as specified in Table 3.1.
The tolerances for dimensions indicated in AS 2947.1 shall be applicable to all nominal
values including nominal maximum diameter and nominal minimum creepage distance
values given in Table 3.1.
NOTES:
1 Lightning impulse withstand voltage and wet power frequency withstand voltage are specified
in Table 3.1 for single-unit string insulators.
Values of withstand voltages of insulator strings consisting of more than one unit are not
included in this Standard.

COPYRIGHT
11 AS/NZS 2947.2:2002

2 The total spacing for a long rod unit and correspondingly the total length of a long rod string
depends on the coupling piece used and is determined by adding the length of the coupling
piece (∆L) to L2 (see Figures 3.1 to 3.2).
∆L, determined in accordance with the requirements of AS 2947.3, is for twin ball pins not
suitable for fixing protecting devices, whereas ∆L for twin ball pins suitable for fixing
protecting devices is not given in any publication.
Therefore, for guidance only, Table 3.2 gives approximate values for ∆L for different
coupling pieces. The values are as far as possible based on the requirements of AS 2947.3;
other values are in accordance with actual practice.
3 The rod diameter is not specified since it depends on the mechanical characteristics of the
insulating material.

3.3 DESIGNATION AND MARKING

Long rod insulators shall be designated by the letter L, followed by a figure indicating the

specified mechanical failing load in kilonewtons. Then follows the letter B indicating ball
and socket couplings followed by the letter E indicating external metal fittings (see
Table 3.1). The last figure indicates the nominal minimum length (L 1 ) between metal parts,
in millimetres.
Example
L 160 BE 1000
where
L = long rod insulators
160 = minimum failing load 160 kN
B = ball and socket coupling
E = external metal fittings
1000 = minimum nominal length (L 1 ) between metal parts in millimetres.
Each insulator shall be marked, either on the dielectric or on a metal part, with the name or
trade mark of the manufacturer and the year of manufacture. In addition, each insulator
shall be marked with the specified failing load. These markings shall be legible and
indelible.
The failing load may be indicated by using the first part of the designation given in the first
column of Table 3.1: for example, the insulator may be marked L 160 for the units with
160 kN specified failing load.

APPENDIX A
GUIDE TO THE SELECTION AND APPLICATION OF INSULATORS FOR
OVERHEAD POWER LINES
(Informative)

A1 GENERAL
Every insulator is expected to withstand the power frequency working voltage specified by
the purchaser and withstand this voltage even when wetted by rain or dew. The wet power
frequency withstand voltages given in the tables in this Standard are in accordance with
AS 1824. It may also be necessary to give consideration to additional requirements as
described in Paragraphs A2, A3 and A4.
Licensed to Lycopodium Engineering Pty Ltd on 25 May 2007. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

A2 SYSTEM INSULATION LEVEL

Many modern high voltage systems are designed on the basis that all equipment will
withstand without breakdown a chosen impulse test voltage, which is then known as the
insulation level of the system. Overhead line insulators will generally be chosen to meet at
least the same insulation level as the rest of the equipment. Standard insulation withstand
levels are specified in AS 1824.1.
In many cases, however, higher test voltages and flashover voltages may be required for
line insulators in order to reduce the frequency of flashover. A decision on this question
will be influenced by economic considerations, taking into account the initial cost of the
line and also factors such as the importance of supply interruption by flashover, the
accessibility of the line for inspection and repair of any damage resulting from flashover,
and the degree of exposure of the line. To reduce the amplitude of surges entering
substations, arcing horns may be fitted to some insulators if they are not used throughout,
or, if they are used, the arcing gaps may be reduced in the neighbourhood of the
substations. Alternatively, additional earth wire shielding may be applied.

A3 ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION
Apart from selecting the required impulse withstand level, it is also necessary to ensure that
the insulation will withstand without flashover the atmospheric environment to which it will
be exposed.
The type of pollutants experienced in Australia and New Zealand can be divided into the
following five classes: sea salt, combined salt and industrial pollution, concentrated
industrial pollution, chemical pollution, and natural ground dust. Whilst pollution classes
are generally dependent on the geographical area, it is always possible for a severe
pollution zone to occur within a very localized physical area.
It is possible to obtain satisfactory insulator performance provided the profile and length of
insulation is appropriate for the pollution conditions and climate of the area for which the
insulation is to be used. Due to differences in the types, methods and rates of deposition of
pollution, the frequency and intensity of rain-washing, and meteorological phenomena such
as wind, fog and dew, an insulator design which is satisfactory in one area, may be quite
unsuitable for another.

COPYRIGHT
AS/NZS 2947.2:2002 32

To achieve adequate insulation in areas of high pollution, without having to use excessively
long insulator coupling lengths, it is common practice to use insulator profiles with a higher
ratio of creepage length to coupling length. Insulators with ‘aerodynamic’ profiles or ‘fog’
profiles are two widely used means of achieving these higher ratios. However extensive
research has shown that these high creepage length profiles are more suited to other
applications.
Aerodynamic or open profile insulators, have little or no ribbing under the sheds and
initially tend to collect pollution on their surface more rapidly than standard profile
insulators, though the final level after some weeks in the absence of rain tends to be less.
Conversely, fog profile insulators, with deep closely spaced ribs, tend to collect pollution
quite slowly at first but become more heavily polluted after long exposures without rain
washing.
Consequently aerodynamic profile insulators have generally shown superior pollution
performance in regions characterized by dry periods of several months or more, while fog
Licensed to Lycopodium Engineering Pty Ltd on 25 May 2007. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

profile insulators tend to perform better in regions characterized by more frequent rain. It is
important to stress that regardless of the type of insulation selected, it is necessary to ensure
that adequate creepage length is used to withstand the particular voltage.
Insulation creepage lengths listed in Table A1 should generally be adequate for use in light
pollution conditions. For insulation installed in locations other than light pollution
environments, creepage lengths should exceed the minimum creepage lengths in Table A1.
Quantitative design guidelines are found in AS 4436—1996.
There is normally some improvement in the pollution performance when insulators that are
designed for use in the vertical orientation are used in an inclined or horizontal orientation.
In the absence of data specific to different orientations, any change in this performance is
usually neglected since it is necessary to maintain electrical coordination between vertically
mounted and horizontally mounted insulation. At nominal system voltages generally of
33 kV and below, insulation should also consider minimum dimensions necessary to ensure
adequate clearances for birds, etc.
More detailed information on pollution characteristics and quantitative insulation design
guidelines are found in AS 4436—1996. Guidance for artificial pollution testing of
insulators may be obtained from IEC 60507. The Electricity Supply Association of
Australia has prepared a manual outlining the performance of outdoor insulation in
Australia (ESAA D(b) 19-1975) and this document should assist engineers in determining
suitable designs.

A4 ALTITUDE
The flashover voltage of insulators and air gaps varies with the relative air density (RAD).
Since laboratory test results are corrected to unity RAD, it may be necessary to make an
allowance for significant variations in RAD under which the system may operate.
The average line altitude is the most important parameter and normal design procedure is to
apply a correction factor proportional to RAD and hence proportional to altitude. An
average correction factor is 1 percent per 100 m of altitude.
NOTE: This value is calculated on the assumption that the site temperature and pressure are
normal for the altitude. The peak ambient temperature at the site is assumed to be less than 40°C
by a decrement of 2°C for each 300 m in excess of 1000 m above sea level.

COPYRIGHT
33 AS/NZS 2947.2:2002

Since the air gap flashover characteristics are not precise and are subject to variation from
several causes, it is not worthwhile to make corrections for small differences in altitude. It
is usual practice to specify characteristics determined at sea level (i.e. unity RAD) which
are adequate for altitudes up to 1000 m. For insulators for use at altitudes greater than
1000 m a correction is applied which is proportional to the excess altitude, i.e. for
application at an altitude of x metres (x being greater than 1000 m) the test voltage should
be multiplied by—
