Q.No. Question Description M.M.

1. a) 6
A cylindrical shell has two layers of insulation of equal thickness. The outer
layer of assembly is the twice of inner radius, also the inner layer has thermal
conductivity thrice that of outer layer. What will be percentage change in
heat flow, if the layers are interchanged, while the thickness of layers and
driving force remains unchanged?
b) What is the advantage of using multi-pass shell & tube heat exchanger over 3
single pass?
2. a) Ethanol vapor is to be condensed at 78.4 °C and atmospheric pressure at 5
a rate of 250 kg/s, in a water cooled condenser, and the condensed ethanol
liquid is cooled to 35 °C in the same condenser. Cooling water is available
at a mass flow rate of 2500 kg/s, and 25 °C. Both the fluids flow in counter-
current flow pattern. Calculate
(a) Heat duty of condenser.
(b) Draw the temperature profile in the condenser cooler.
(c) Exit temperature of cooling water.
Latent heat of condensation of ethanol= 846 kJ/kg
Specific heat of ethanol and water are 2.46 kJ/kg.°C and 4.17 kJ/kg.°C
respectively
b) Write physical significance of Graetz number & Paclet number. 2
3. a) Helium gas is heated at a rate of 2000 kg/h by using steam in a double pipe 5
condenser. Steam condenses at 160 °C at operating pressure. The heat duty
of condenser is 38700 kcal/kg.°C. Specific heat of helium can be taken as

0.239 kcal/kg.°C. Condenser has an area of 10 m2 and overall heat transfer
coefficient is estimated as 70 kcal/h.m 2 .°C. Calculate the inlet and outlet
temperature of gas.
