Calculation for Diesel Generator Sizing Rev. A

1.0 GENERAL

This calculation is prepared to determine the capacity of Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG)
for safe shut down operation and provide power for essential supplies of ZAWIA Combined
Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) and CCPP Extension in Libya.

3.0 DISIGN CRITERIA & FORMULA

3.1 General

To calculate the capacity of EDG, the following cases are considered ;

Notes : 1. Load type : M (Motor load), N (Non-motor load)

2. Input Power = Rated kW / Efficiency
3. Actual Load = Input Power × Duty Factor
4. Duty factor : Continuous (1), Intermittent (0.5), Stand-by (0)

4.0 CALCULATION OF EDG SIZING

4.1 Calculation for Case I

The capacity required for continuous operation during shutdown of STG’s is calculated by
the following formula ;

p1 p 2 p 3 p 1
PG 1 = α( + + + ⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅ + n ) × [KVA]
η1 η 2 η3 ηn PFG
1
= {0.9 × (188.9 + 299.7) + 1 × (4.5 + 326.0)} ×
0 .8
= 962.8 [kVA]

Calculation for Diesel Generator Sizing 2 2007-02-21

ZAWIA CCPP
Calculation for Diesel Generator Sizing Rev. A

Where,

PG1 : Generator capacity [kVA]

PFG : Generator power-factor (standardized at 0.8)
P : Output of load [kW]
η : Efficiency of load (0.85)
α : Coefficient considering load factor, demand factor, margin of capacity, etc
(Motor : 0.9, Non-motor : 1.0)

4.2 Calculation for Case II

The EDG shall also be capable of starting the largest motor (Pump for Air Cooled
Condensing Unit, 71.2kW) as the remaining loads are running ;

PG 2 = ∑ W 0 + [Q Lmax × cos θ QL ]
[kVA]
PF G
735.3 + ( 83 . 8 × 7 × 0.2)
=
0.8
= 1065.8 [kVA]

Where

PG2 : Generator capacity [kVA]

∑ W0 : Summation of operating load [kW], 735.3 (188.9+4.5+299.7+326.0-83.8=735.3)
cosθ QL : Power factor during starting of the largest motor, 0.2
PFG : Power-factor of diesel generator, 0.8

5.0 CONCLUSION

Description Calculated Capacity Largest Capacity

PG1 : 962.8 [kVA]

Emergency Diesel
PG2 : 1065.8 [kVA]
Generator
PG2 : 1065.8 [kVA]

Based on the calculated capacities and considering sufficient margin, the rated capacity of
EDG will be selected as 1250 [kVA] at 0.8 PF.
