Criteria to be assessed:
Criteria B: Inquiring and designing
Criteria C: Processing and evaluating
Task Guide :
1. Alignment with SoI:
“Natural earth processes shape landscapes and maintain the planet’s
environments by constantly reworking, conserving, and renewing its
materials”.
Students are asked to conduct an experiment independently about several topics such as:
-Model of solar system
-Model of Natural Disaster
- Ecosystem
- Earth Layer
- Atmosphere
- Hydrosphere
Using scientific method in finding the relationship of each variables and use the result as an
evidence to explain things that happen in the experiment.
2. Time allocation:
6 periods (270 minutes)
8 Arctic :
8 Atlantic :
8 Pacific :
3. Task description:
In fulfilling the requirement of Criterion B, students are to find the research question, predict
the hypothesis, define the variables and select the appropriate materials and method in the
first 2 periods (90 minutes duration). The steps are:
1. Choose one of the topic
2. Find the topic from the subject chosen
3. Do research about the topic chosen(what do you want to find out?)
4. Find the research question
5. Formulate the hypothesis
6. Define the variables (independent, dependent and controlled variables)
7. Select the appropriate materials and method
8. Consider the safety level
In fulfilling the requirement of Criterion C, students are to collect all data, interpret the data
obtained, evaluate the hypothesis, evaluate the methods, and explain the improvements
needed in the second 2 periods (90 minutes duration). The steps are:
1. Collect, organize and present all data (visualize it in form of table and graph for
numerical data only)
2. Interpret all data obtained by checking the relationship of each variable
3. Evaluate your hypothesis
4. Evaluate your methods
5. Describe the improvements needed
Criterion C
Data Collection, Organization and Presentation

place?
● Have I processed my data using proper methods and showed examples?
● Have I transformed my numerical data in best fit line graph form?
● Is my graph correct? (including titles, axis labels, and I have used lines of best fit)
Data Interpretation
● Have I recognized the patterns?
● Have I correctly used knowledge and understanding of science to draw conclusions
from the data?
● Have I outlined how data have changed and how fast the change occurred?
● Have I outlined the relation between variables?
● Have I outlined why the variables are related?
Analysis
Evaluation on Hypothesis
● Have I stated whether my data supports/does not support my prediction?
● Have I supported my because statement with scientific reasoning?
● Have I discussed the strengths and limitations of the data I collected to evaluate my
hypothesis?
● Have I discussed any factors that might affect my variables to improve the validity of
my hypothesis?
Evaluation on Methods
● Have I stated whether my method allowed/did not allow me to test my hypothesis?
● Have I discussed the strength and weakness of my method?
● Have I discussed the validity and reliability of my methods?
Suggestions
● Have I described any improvement needed in my method?
● Have I described the reason of my improvement? (Is it realistic and based on
scientific reasoning and research?)
● Have I suggested another factor that can extend my investigation?

Research Question
I want to investigate whether we can make clay from soil and does different type
of soil affect the percentage of clay.
This is because I have observed that if we want to buy clay at the store
sometimes it is expensive and I wanted to try to make clay with just simple
materials.
I predict that natural soil will have more percentage of clay and the store bought
soil will have less or even no clay at all.
This is because natural soil has sand, silt, and clay but on the other hand store
bought soil is mixed with different materials that may not contain clay at all
Theoretical Background
Other information that supports my hypothesis is that store bought soil is made
out of non soil material because according to Nan Hampton store bought soil is
made out of peat moss, finely shredded barks, compost, and perlite and these
materials don’t contain soil.
My prediction is testable. I know this because from my research I have come
across so many people that turn soil to clay and they have a very successful
result, therefore I can say that my prediction is testable.
III. Material and Methods B.iii
Variables
Independent Different types of soil:
- Natural Soil
- Store Bought Soil
Methods
Table
Raw Data
From this graph we can see that the type of soil affects the percentage of clay
because if you look at the graph the natural soil contain far more percentage of clay
than the store bought soil. My data does not have a trend or a pattern because the
experiment does not involve different volumes of soil or the water. My data shows a
really significant difference in the percentage of clay which is 24.7% difference, that
percentage is a lot because if you look at the data the store bought has 0% of clay
and it is not even reaching the 1% mark.

V. Discussion C.ii
Data Interpretation
My data shows that the best soil to make clay is natural soil because it still natural
and has not been mixed with any chemicals. My data suggests that the store bought
soil is really bad if you want to make clay because it does not contain any clay in it.
This might be because the store bought soil is made out of things that is not even
soil at all. Another source that supports this reason is Nan Hampton which says
store bought soil is made out of non-soil materials. I conclude that this experiment
has helped me solve my original problem. This is because now I know that if I
wanted to make my own homemade clay I know what soil to use and what soil to not
use.
C.ii
I predict that natural soil will have more percentage of clay and the store bought soil i
will have less or even no clay at all. My data supports my prediction. I think this
because I did a good research and my research comes from a credible source and I
was able to find the right material to do my experiment.
