1. GENERAL

This Document shall not be used as a basis for manufacture and supply of
original and replacement parts to AIRBUS INDUSTRIE unless specifically
required in a contract or purchase agreement .

1 .1 Subject

This specification defines the procedures and inspection for cleaning and
passivation of stainless steel, and nickel and cobalt alloys .

1 .2 Limitations of use

Assemblies formed by metals other than stainless steel and nickel and
cobalt alloys shall not be immersed in any process solution, except when
they have been adequately masked .

Assemblies with silver solder may not be treated by any of the chemical
solutions included in this documents .

1 .3 Health and safety statement

This specification does not necessarily detail all the precautions


necessary to meet the requirements of health and safety .

It is the responsability of the user of this specification to consult


and establish appropriate health and safety precautions and the method
should be operated only by trained personnel .

2. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS

Equipment

2 .1 .1 Baths

The material of the tanks shall be as described in Tables 1 and 2 .

2 .2 Materials

Nitric acid 40-42°Be .


Hydroflouric acid 70% .
Glacial acetic acid .
Hydrogen peroxide .
Sodium dichromate .

3. PROCESS

The methods selection shall be made as a function of the different surface


treatment after cleaning or passivation .

The parts must be totally immersed into the baths to prevent local etching .

3 .1 Method 1

Cleaning before heat treatment, welding, forming, penetrant inspection .

Inspection

(1) For martensitic stainless steel with tensile strength over 1080 MPa,
it shall be necessary to perform a dehydrogenization in furnace at
190 ° ± 10 ° C for at Least 3 hours .

The maximum delay time between the part Leave to the bath until
entrance into the furnace shall be 4 hours .

3 .1 .2 Degreasing with solvent in vapor phase

Degreasing shall be according to PMS 01-01-01 .

3 .1 .3 Alkaline degreasing

Degreasing shall be according to PMS 01-01-03 .

3 .1 .4 Rinsing by immersion

After the alkaline degreasing, the parts shall be rinsed in water during
a minimum time of 2 minutes .

The quality of this water is class B as defined in PMS 01-01-18 .

3 .1 .5 Inspection

After rinsing a water break free inspection shall be performed on the


part .

3 .1 .6 If is required, after rinsing, the part shall be introduced in a


hydrofluoric/nitric acid solution, with the following working conditions .

3 .1 .7 Rinsing by immersion

After the hydrofluoric/nitric acid pickling, the parts shall be immersed


in water during a minimum time of 2 minutes .

The quality of water is class B as defined in PMS 01-01-18 .

3 .1 .8 Inspection

After rinsing a water break free inspection shall be performed on the


part .

3 .1 .9 Dry

Drying shall be performed in air or in a oven at a temperature below


110 ° C .

3 .1 .10 Handling

Once clean, the parts shall be handled with clean cotton gloves and
they will be protected by neutral paper against contamination .

(1) For martensitic stainless steel with tensile strength over 1080 MPa,

3 .2 .2 Degreasing in vapor phase

Degreasing shall be according to PMS 01-01-01 .

3 .2 .3 Dry blasting

Dry blasting shall be according to PMS 01-01-14-1,

3 .2 .4 Vapor blasting

Vapor blasting shall be according to PMS 01-01-14-2 .

3 .2 .5 Rinsing by immersion

After the vapor blasting, the parts shall be immersed in water during a
minimum time of 2 minutes .

The quality of this water is class B as defined to PMS 01-01-18 .

3 .2 .6 Hydrofluoric/nitric acid pickling

Shall be realized according para . 3 .1 .6 of this specification .

3 .2 .7 Rinsing by immersion

After the hydrofluoric/nitric acid pickling, the parts shall be immersed


in water during a minimum time of 2 minutes .

The quality of this water is class B as defined to PMS 01-01-18 .

3 .2 .8 Inspection

After rinsing a water break free inspection shall be performed on the


part .

3 .2 .9 Dry

Drying shall be performed in air or in an oven at a temperature below


110 ° C .

3 .2 .10 Handling

Once clean, the parts shall be handled with clean cotton gloves and

3 .3 .6 Passivation

The parts shall be immersed in a solution, with the following working


conditions .

etching factor, which shall be approximately 25 ,Um/h/surface .

3 .3 .7 Rinsing by immersion

After the passivation, the parts shall be immersed in water during a


minimum time of 2 minutes .

The quality of water is class B as defined in PMS 01-01-18 .

3 .3 .8 Dry

Drying shall be performed in air or in a oven at a temperature below


110 0 C .

3 .3 .9 Handling

Once clean, the parts shall be handled with clean cotton gloves and they
will be protected by neutral paper against contamination .

4. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

4 .1 Equipment control

Check the validity period of thermometers and thermostats .

4 .2 Process control

4 .2 .1 Chemical control of the bath

All the process bath shall be kept in a clean condition and within the
established chemical composition limits the periodicity established by
Quality Assurance Authority, the required chemical analysis and proper
regenerations shall be made to obtain the established working conditions .

4 .2 .2 Visual inspection

Check water break free after rinses .

Check that there are no product residues in holes and cavities .

Check that the surface of the metal is of even appearance and free
from pits scaling, contamination, etc ., that could originate
corrosion .
