1.0 COMPANY & PROJECT DETAILS

The short semester Internship programme was one of the most valuable and
innovative experience in my architecture journey. First and foremost, I would like to
take this opportunity to thank my supervisor, Chai Yahn Rur for supervising me
throughout these 10 weeks of internship. She has enlightened and guided me to apply
all those architecture knowledge I have learned in my previous sems to the working
reality. I would also like to thank the other colleagues in the company for being so
friendly and willing to share their mistakes so I could save much time completing my
project and explore more in this architecture career.

Arkitek Billings Leong & Tan Sdn. Bhd. was established in 1951 and many
significant landmarks in Sabah, Malaysia have been completed, such as Sutera
Harbour Resort, KK Times Square, Nexus Resort Karambunai, etc. In such way, I am
able to benefit myself to understand more about hotel & resort, industrial and public
& institutional works of categories. At the beginning of my internship period, I tried
getting used to the working environment and of course understand and observe their
personalities (colleagues). All of them are friendly and we have many common topics
to share and talk about, so basically our communication is quite good. I also realize
communication skills is very important especially in nowadays fields’.

The first project I was involved in is a hotel project which is located in Inanam, Sabah.
It has a inclined topography and the size of the land is not wide enough to design car
parks, so car parks were designed in the hotel from first floor to the sixth floor. The
plan drawings of the hotel were designed and completed by my supervisor, Chai Yahn
Rur. There are two blocks of building onwards from sixth floor which people could
see building to building pedestrian bridge in the middle. It suit the climate and
temperature in Inanam and gives suitable amount of natural lighting to the space in
the middle part of the building. My role in this project is to build a 3D model of the
building and design the facade to suit the site context. The perspective

renderings generated from the 3D model are presented to my supervisor after I have
completed some special design. During the process of this 3d design, I have done
some research and also refer to similar project from previous work which contain the
same client ; I also realize a fact that some client go for affordable and simple design
instead of fancy or bombastic design, so before designing always understand the
requirement and objective of the client. I have also done some quick sketch of the
facade I wanted to generate in SketchUP in papers and compare the bigger picture of
the facade designs. There are also some major changes which occur during the design
process due to the privacy of hotel room as windows are facing to each other from
two blocks, so I had also design louvers to block half side of the window in different
direction to maximize the privacy level of the room and gets suitable amount of
natural lighting in the same time. From this first project, I have learned about high rise
design, building construction, some by-laws and setbacks and some features of the 3D
Model generator software - SketchUp. Meanwhile, this project will be still staying at
the design stage after I proceed to my second project.

The second project is also a hotel, which is located in the city of Kota Kinabalu,
Sabah. In this project, I was told to draw out the detail drawings of the air-well in
AutoCAD which is from another supervisor, Vincent Lai. As this is my first time to
be in touch with detail drawings, Vincent Lai had to guide me what to draw and
include in the drawings with some reference from the previous project as well. From
the drawings, I have learned what material to apply and label in air-well to maximize
its strength, cost, functions, etc. Not only that, I also learned to produce the air well
drawings in sections, plans and typical elevations. There are also some changes in the
process while drawing the detail drawings for air well which client wanted to switch
in the opposite direction for aesthetic purposes. From this air well, Vincent Lai also
guided me and share something about ‘Unifrom-Building by-Law’(UBBL), the
minimum size of each air-well where provided in all buildings shall be followed with
the storeys in height to determine the size of the air-well in square metres. The

minimum size of each air-well for lavatories, water closets and bathrooms would have
different sizes for better ventilation.

The third project I was given is also a hotel, which is located in Penampang,
Sabah. In this project, I was told to draw out the detail drawings of the staircase in
AutoCAD by my main supervisor, Chai Yahn Rur. The Building consist of nineteen
floors including the basement and roof plan with eleven staircase in each of every
floors, so in this project I took quite long to complete it but in the same time I also
took advantage to practice my speed in using AutoCAD. Meanwhile, I also learned to
design staircase base on ‘Uniform-Building by-Law’ (UBBL) such as the maximum
and minimum height of a riser for fire escape staircase, width of the landing and some
other height details. So while drawing the detail section in AutoCAD, I would also
start calculating a balanced height of risers to suit the space given in the original plans
and reproduce a updated floor plan to Chai. Next, I also learned to set colour plot for
line-weight purposes to communicate with Chai, so she could just take my colour plot
file with the updated sections and plans and recheck as different people has different
color plot style. My supervisor, Chai also guided me to generate a proper set of
drawing with title block beside and some small details such as fonts, grid type, paper
scaling, etc.

The fourth project is to proposed a new township at SG. Tiram, Sandakan. I was
guided to create a land use analysis plan by my supervisor, Chai with some reference
from the previous project. Firstly, I was told to trace the key plan and location plan
from Google-earth using AutoCAD and labeled it with legend in Photoshop to
indicate the parcel of each land included the size of the land (acres). From this project,
I have been enlightened on how a project starts and introduced with ; The main road
to access the proposed site and from the city centre also gives a important information
to the client.

In the sixth week, the other interns and I were able to have a site visit after
requesting with a supervisor called Rina. The location of the site is at Off Kokol Road,
Menggatal. Through this site visit, I have learned to check the actual building in the
site refer with the final drawing plans, as sometimes drawings could not be consider
in actual construction so the final drawing plans might still have some slight changes
or workers didn’t follow the design of the drawings, it happens sometimes. During the
site visit, we also participate with the consultants and painter to discuss about the
colour of the stairs and different samples to use to satisfy the client.

In conclusion, as an intern I have learned to appreciate the exhilarating moment

when I can laugh with my colleagues and gaining a lot of experience in the same time
especially on hotel projects. Also, by doing different type of projects I have learned
to identify different knowledge in this architecture career; this helped me develop a
deeper understanding of the UBBL and gets familiar with the real life of an Architect.
Last but not least, I would like to thank my Tutor AR. Ian Aik-Soon Ng for an office
visit and briefing us the stages that will be involved during the internship period.
