COURSE NAME: Heat & Mass Transfer

COURSE CODE: ME- 352 CR: 3-0
CONTACT: kamran.afaq@hitecuni.edu.pk

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an Engineering Depth Course. These courses further strengthen the knowledge of heat & mass
transfer and develop the foundation for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Power Plants course.
Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics courses offered in earlier semester’s lays foundation for this course. At
the end of this course, student will be able to design Heat Exchangers under various constraints.
CO-REQUISITE
TEXT AND MATERIALS:
Textbook
1. Heat Transfer –A Practical Approach by Y.A.Cengel
References Material:
1. Heat Transfer by J.P. Holman
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLO/s:
1. PLO-1: Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and
engineering to the solution of complex engineering problems.
2. PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate and analyze complex engineering problems.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain and summarize the different parameters which are responsible for different modes of heat and
mass transfer.
2. Apply the basic laws to solve multilayered problems of heat and Mass transfer in different geometries.
3. Analyze the different geometry of fins for a particular problem of heat transfer
4. Design heat exchangers under various constrains.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
In engineering practice, an understanding of the mechanisms of heat transfer is becoming increasingly
important since heat transfer plays a crucial role in the design of vehicles, power plants, refrigerators,
electronic devices, buildings, and bridges, among other things.
