With the help of his popularity, appealing speeches and the goal of serving the masses Joseph “Erap”

Estrada had his memorable win during the presidential election for also having the record of garnering
the most number of votes in the history. But despite the recognition, Estrada’s name was magnetized by
issues particularly by corruption charges that tested his and his administration’s accountability.
Accountability in terms of good governance talks about the providing of information about the decision
and actions they are making and to also justify these acts to the public.

Enumerated are some of the issues that are related to former President Joseph Estrada:

 One of the cases that Estrada have encountered was the issue about being associated with an
illegal number game called “Jueteng” which was accused by Ilocos Sur’s Luis “Chavit” Singson
stating that he is the “lord of all jueteng lords” for earning 5 million protection money monthly
during his term.
 Another issue was the PSCO funding controversy that has to do with Estrada, his wife,
mistresses and kids being included as incorporate individuals. It was said that the First Lady,
Mrs. Loi Ejercito and her private establishment, Securities and Exchange Commission —the
Partnership for the Poor Foundation, Inc. collected a total of 100 million cash donations from
PSCO that was considered to exceed the PCSO's combined donation of P65 million to regular
beneficiaries like orphanages and hospitals.
 Rep. Magtanggol Guinigundo II also issued him about allocating extravagant vehicles and SUVs
to his Cabinet Secretaries and favored political partners. At first Pres. Estrada oppose his
commentators of the call to restore the "hot autos" to the Bureau of Customs, but later on back
downs and commanded to dispose the vehicles.

But Erap’s presidency is not just all about the issues on corruption; he also provided us policies that the
public benefited:

 It was in his term when the PAOTF of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force was
created that has the objective of eradicating car theft and kidnapping cases. It was also the time
when the highest record of +53 percent trust rating for the Philippine National Police was
achieved.
 Knowing that Erap dedicates himself to the masses, he ordered the National
Telecommunications Commission a “Masa” format on the radio, shifting English-based station
to air more of OPM songs that is being practiced up until now by several radio stations.

Each presidential term will be tested by being accountable and by the looks of it; Erap’s illegality will
always overpower the positive things he have done for the Philippines. Knowing that he had lots of
hidden agendas and dishonesty while he is in his presidential seat, it may be said that he failed to
manifest the characteristic of accountability to the public.
