Firm output and firm discharge …
The firm peak output is the output which the power plant is
able to produce almost every day of the year (90% to 95% of
the days of the year) continuously for the specified time
during the peak demand.
Effective head (rated head): the head loss (Hl) is the loss when
the water flows down in a hydropower system. Effective head
(He) is the head which works effectively for the turbine, and
expressed as follows:
He = Hg – Hl;
Reservoir
River flow fluctuates significantly throughout the course of the
year. Plant discharge increased by storing surplus water in the wet
season and then releasing it in the dry season. Thus, a relatively
equalized discharge can be obtained and stable electric power can
be generated. The reservoir is, therefore, constructed to regular
seasonal fluctuation of the river flow.
Representative year
A representative year is the year when the features of the river are
best expressed for an entire period for which runoff data is
available. It is applied when the project is planned using runoff
data for one year.
Mean flow
The mean flow is obtained by dividing the total flow over a
specific period of time by the number of days involved. It is
called the monthly mean flow for monthly periods and annual
mean flow for yearly periods.
Mass curve
Is the ratio of the annual plant discharge to the volume of the plant
discharge at continuous operation of maximum output for one year
