Background:
Kids living in an orphanage do not know what the love of family feels like. Being around
them, making them feel loved can be a very constructive way of contributing to their
lifestyle.
Sometimes, children living in these setups become mentally upset. If we as individuals and
go up to them and provide them help it would be a great initiative.
Contributing to an orphanage helps in giving back to the society that we live in. People who
are fortunate enough to have all the facilities of life at their disposal should consider giving
back to those who are under privileged. Doing so gives a feeling of fulfillment to the people
who are associated with it.
Another reason why people should contribute to the welfare of orphanages and the most
important one is because one can do it, because one is in a position to do it.
At the end, it is not just a monetary benefit that we as a society should be giving them. Apart
from money, we can give them skill development training, help them with their education,
help them fight against any negativity that surrounds their mind and most importantly make
them feel loves. This wouldn’t just ensure that they are safe and happy but would also make
us feel good about ourselves at the end of the day.

Need analysis:
Orphanages are made to take care of children who do not have their parents. Every orphanage
strives at providing them with all the basic amenities of life in a way that is feasible for them.
What is important is to know what happens to the people who move out of orphanages.
The need of this project is to ascertain if the people, who become successful and move out of
orphanages, contribute or show any further association with the orphanage or not.

History and Objective of Nachiket Balagram:

IT was founded in 2001. The idea was to target the grass-root and underprivileged children.
The welfare has a child welfare department. It started with just 4 children. The number has
now become 55 (30 boys, 25 girls) of between 7-15 years of age till present.
They are authorized by government to provide this facility to up to 75 children.

Motto:
The children at the orphanage need family-like care. Nachiket Balagram provides them such
environment so that feel at home.
They provide basic facilities (food and shelter) and education along with moral values and
discipline.

Schedule:
Every hour should be properly utilized and channelized. They make sure that every child is
self-sufficient. They follow the gurukul/ashram concept.
The children wake up at 5am and do physical exercise.

Education system at Nachiket Balagram:

On our first visit to nachiket balagram we were told about the education structure that is
followed there.
The orphanage has a school of their own, named Matru Seva Vidyamandir which is affiliated
under the state board.
The objective is to incorporate skill work in their syllabus so that students get jobs and
relevant employment opportunities in market.
The school shares the same premise as the residential block and free education is provided to
the children till class 8. Post class 8 they are sent to a nearby high school and the education
there is also sponsored by the trust that runs the orphanage. If any child has extraordinary
merit, then the trust sponsors his entire education till the time the child finds a suitable job.
Otherwise they enroll the children for various skill development programs like computer
skills so that they find it easy to look for a job after school.

If people who get out of the orphanage, help the place:

On interacting with the founder we were informed that there have been many examples of
people who have helped the orphanage after leaving it
There was a boy who did his Masters in clinical psychology and was offered a good job as a
therapist. He worked for a while but later decided to come back to the orphanage and now he
is associated with it for the past 2 years.

This clearly states how people who become successful in life show their association with the
orphanage.

Funding of the organization:

The orphanage completely runs on corporate and voluntary donations. Mahindra and Tata are
their main contributors.
Entire orphanage is solar-power enabled and also makes use of gobar-gas setup by rotary
club.
The furniture used in school is provided by Tata group.
The orphanage also has tie ups with nearby hospitals like Gandhi Nursing Home and
Bhalerao ENT. The hospitals provide necessary vaccinations to the children.
The orphanage is looking for donations to implement solar-power in the entire organization.

Administration:
4 people for administrative and office work
12 teachers
3 ladies for food and cleaning
Title of the Project
Ujjwal - Igniting Young Minds

Objectives
The objective is to get a deeper understanding of how orphanages like Nachiket Balagram
function along with getting to know
 Why businesses and individuals target orphanages as their primary target for donations
 Do donations (materialistic) help the orphanages and the children in any way
 The people who get out of the orphanages by either getting adopted or self, and become
successful in life, do they contribute back for the place which was their shelter
 What can we, as a society, students and future managers, can do
 Provide career guidance for the children
 Making people aware about such organization so that more people help them

Milestones achieved till now

Keeping in mind the interests of the students, we organized different art and craft games for
students and also as students were really interested in learning paint, We kept a session of one
hour where students were taught the basics of MS Paint. We also showed various sort
animated videos to the children, and purposely kept them funny so that the children could
enjoy to the fullest. We were given a permission of 3hours by the caretaker and thus we
wanted to make the most of those three hours wherein we tried our best to spread happiness
among the children and also at the same time tried to inculcate some basic computer related
knowledge in them.

So the first game that we had organized was that we had assorted items like notepad, pens,
pencils, balls, chocolates, small bells etc. in a bag. Children, one by one were told to put their
hand inside the bag and guess the first item that they get hold of it. If they guess it right,
They were asked to draw that same thing on a drawing sheet. The ones who were not able to
guess it, were made to sing a song as a punishment. Children enjoyed a lot as the ones who
guessed right, drew weird but really cute drawings and those who couldn’t guess it, sang
some really good Hindi and Marathi songs. So around 25 students played this game and out
of that only 14 could guess it right and the other 11 had to sing.

The next game was that the children were asked to mimic any one person he or she likes. It
could either be their favorite actor/actress or any other person. We were really skeptical that
whether children will enjoy this activity or no. But to our surprise, they loved it. The way
they mimicked was awesome. The best among them was one student Ritwik, who mimicked
their very own care taker. The way he did was so amazing that all the other children laughed
out loudly and told us that he had exactly copied the caretaker. We told him to do it in front
of the caretaker but as he was a bit shy so we didn’t force him. One boy named Sharman,
mimicked his favourite Actor Ajay Devgun. He was actually speaking the dialogs of the
movie “Singham”, but he was forgetting them halfway. The best part was that the children
among the audience knew the dialogs and helped him complete his act.

After the games were done, next was the computer session. We had with us three laptops.
There were 18 children who were interested in learning Microsoft Paint. We divided them in
three groups i.e. 6 in each group. For first 10 minutes. They were given the basic knowledge
of the paint tools and they were taught to make shapes and fill colors. After that each child
got 10 minutes to draw shapes on paint and then fill color in them. We told them that the one
who’ll perform the best would get a chocolate. The children were really creative with shapes
and colors. The best one was a girl named Sanskriti. She drew a beautiful scenery and used
very subtle and soothing colors. As promised we gave her a chocolate and distributed sweets
among all others.

The last thing for the evening that we had organized for the students was some animated
funny videos. We wanted the children to enjoy to the fullest therefore all the videos were
funny. We had around 15 such videos which we played on the projector. Everyone laughed
really hard and had a great time. We cannot describe the feeling of content we had, when we
saw them laughing so hard. There was one particular video where a guy was repeatedly
falling from the horse, the children liked that video the most. They were literally telling us to
play that video again and again.

Milestones to be achieved

The things that we’ve planned for next week are.

 Some sports like kabaddi and football

 Will continue with the paint Class
 Any short and informative documentary for children
 Some GK Related games.
 Basics of MS Power point (as some children showed interest)

After a detailed discussion with children in the orphanage, we came up with various activities that
they are interested in. We would be taking forward some of them so that we are able to add value to
their lives.

Girls: 25 Boys: 30

Gender Diversity

45%
Boys
Girls
55%
Children interested in sports: the distribution in inclusive of both girls and boys.

Wrestling, 7

Kho Kho, 17
Football, 10

Cricket, 9
Kabaddi, 17

Children were also interested in art and craft, entertainment and computer skills.
Out of all, around 15 showed interests in crafts (mostly girls) and we would be taking it up in
upcoming sessions

There were only two boys aged 8 who were aware of power point skills. They want to learn further in
the same area. Almost 15 students were aware about MS Paint and would like to learn more
applications with colours and graphics.

We would be dividing the teams of 2 mentors to help them gain some knowledge about the above
mentioned skills.

As per the orphanage rules, we are not allowed to click pictures of the children because some of them
do not like it. Hence below are some pictures of the study group inside the orphanage.
