 COEP: HERITAGE
College of Engineering Pune (COEP), the third
oldest engineering college in India, was
established in the year 1854. It is a premier
engineering institution in the country and
consistently been ranked high by various
independent surveys on Technical Education in
India. It is the Lead Centre under the Technical
Education Quality Improvement Programme
(TEQIP) assisted by the World Bank. The institute
has around 3500 students on roll pursuing
undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral
programmes in various disciplines of engineering.
CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The Department of Civil Engineering, established
in 1854, has the distinction of being the oldest
department in the institute. It has set up a great
tradition of producing distinguished engineers
such as Bharat Ratna Late Sir. M. Visvesvarayya.
The department has kept updating to well-
equipped laboratories and research. The faculty
believe in high quality teaching and are actively
involved in Consultancy projects, conferences and
research publications.
COURSE CONTENTS
 Analysis and design of structural steel
Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) buildings to
resist earthquakes.
 Implications of the current Indian standards on
the design of steel MRF buildings.
 Capacity Design of steel MRF Connections.
 Draft provisions for earthquake resistant
design and detailing for steel MRF buildings.
 Design and Vibration Control of Tall Steel
Buildings.
COURSE FACULTY
C. V. R. Murty (CVRM) is Professor at the
Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute
of Technology, Madras. His primary areas of
research interests are (a) non-linear behaviour of
structures, (b) displacement-based design of
structures, and (c) seismic design codes. He has
conducted, with his colleagues, over 40 short
courses on Seismic Design of Buildings and
Bridges, and Seismic Evaluation and
Strengthening of Existing Structures. He is a
Member of Bureau of Indian Standards and Indian
Roads Congress code committees.
Rupen Goswami (RG) is Associate Professor at
the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras. His primary
areas of research interests are (a) structural
dynamics and earthquake resistant design of steel
and reinforced concrete structures, (b) nonlinear
analysis of structures, (c) design and detailing of
structural components for performance-based
design. He is a Member of Bureau of Indian
Standards and Indian Roads Congress code
committees.
Jaswant N. Arlekar (JNA) is Practicing
Civil/Structural Engineer at R. S. Mandrekar &
Associates. His primary areas of research and
consulting interest are (a) structural analysis and
design of residential, commercial and industrial
structures, (b) assessment and repairs of existing
structures, (c) development of simplified methods
capacity-based design of steel buildings. He is a
Member of Bureau of Indian Standards and Indian
Roads Congress code committees.
Suhasini N. Madhekar (SNM) is Professor at the
Department of Civil Engineering, COEP. Her
primary areas of research interests are (a)
earthquake resistant design of structures, (b)
seismic isolation and vibration control of
structures, (c) materials for high rise buildings.
She has organised several seminars, workshops
and conferences and, delivered invited lectures all
over India. She is reviewer of international
journals and has authored international journal
papers and book chapters.
