TEXTBOOK: ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES, 12th ed., with Wiley Plus by

Weygandt, Kieso & Kimmel, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course continues the introduction of generally accepted principles and practices
of contemporary financial accounting. It develops an ability to prepare and analyze
financial statements for a profit-oriented business. This course will show financial
accounting as a source of business information and will explore the problems of
measuring values over time.
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
1. have more thorough understanding of the basic principles learned in ACC 101
2. be acquainted with additional fundamental accounting principles and topics
such as
 Cost-volume-profit analysis
 Partnerships
 Corporations
 Analysis of financial statements
 Statements of Cash Flow
 Be prepared for more advanced study in accounting and/or other related
business requirements

Readings
 We will be using the 12th edition of the Accounting Principles text by
Weygandt, Kimmel & Kieso which is published by John Wiley & Sons with
an access code for you to use the publisher’s website called WileyPlus.
Actually, the only materials you will need for the course will be available to
you at this website (including a full, online version of the text). This access
code may be purchased directly from the publisher (recommended) or it may
be obtained at the SCCC bookstore on the Selden Campus. Textbooks
purchased from other sources will not provide the needed access code.
 The bookstore is also selling a package which includes the 12th edition of this
text along with a card which contains the WileyPlus access code that you will
need for our course. This option is more expensive than purchasing the code
from the publisher. However, some people like to have a hard copy of the text,
so this option is available.

Course Learning Activities

This course utilizes primarily four types of learning activities:
1. Lecture Notes and sample applications. You should read these lectures and
carefully review the sample application before you read the textbook.
2. Textbook Reading - Read the section of the textbook that relates to the lecture
notes.
3. Textbook Problems- Complete the assigned homework problems found at the end
of each chapter in the textbook and in the Assignments Section of WileyPlus (specific
problem assignments will be found at the end of each lecture). Textbook assignments
are to be completed using the Wiley Plus program.
4. Review & Practice- Solutions to the homework problems will be provided for you
(in WileyPlus) to review after you have attempted the problems on your own. Wiley
Plus PRACTICE assignments will also be attached to the last lecture for each chapter.
There is no grade given for these assignments - they are intended as a study aid for
the student. Wiley Plus will provide instant feedback regarding your performance on
these assignments - only you will see how well or how poorly you did.
It is imperative that you participate in all of these learning activities. It is expected
that you will have questions and encounter some difficulties - especially in the early
going. Please post your questions to the class as well as to the instructor. You can
often work out your problems by "discussing" them with the members of your class. I
will jump into these discussions regularly to try to keep everyone headed in the right
direction. The discussion areas of each module should be reserved for course related
matters.
GRADING SYSTEM
Wiley Plus Homework assignments count 20% 19.07 of your overall course
grade.

My Expectations
This course requires significant effort on your part. If you are taking this course
because you think it will be easier than it would be in the classroom, then you are
taking it for the wrong reason. I expect you to carefully review each lecture and
follow each of the demonstration problems that are presented. You should follow
this review with a thorough reading of the textbook sections that relate to the
lecture material. Next, you must work through the assigned practice problems and
make every attempt to complete them. Even if you encounter a situation that you
are not sure of, I expect you to provide some response. Finally, you should check
the problem solutions and compare them to your answers. Take note of any
necessary corrections to your work and seek help from myself or from your
classmates to obtain satisfactory resolutions to the errors that you made. Help may
be obtained through on-line discussions, e-mail and phone contact. In addition, at
the conclusion of several lectures, you will be instructed to provide a written
response to an accounting theory question or Ethics case. I expect work to be
completed in a timely manner. You must pace yourself to complete the assignments
and readings prior to the testing dates. You will find the exams extremely difficult
if you have not completed the assignments. Exams will be active for a very limited
period of time. Therefore, you must be sure to complete all work leading up to
them on a timely basis. You must also be sure to take and submit the exams in the
allowable time frame - so be prepared to devote the necessary time. Academic
honesty & integrity is expected and will be strictly enforced as per guidelines in
the college catalog - do your own work.

I will regularly monitor the discussions and join in as necessary. Please maintain
appropriate courtesy and keep the discussions polite and focused.
