FIVE-DAY AYURVEDA CLEANSE

Remove toxins from your body, create a healthy

routine, and improve your digestion in just five days.
Start feeling great today.
WELCOME TO THE
5 DAY CLEANSE!
Reset, refresh, and feel rejuvenated!
This gentle 5-day cleanse contains foods and lifestyle practices traditionally used for
detoxification in Ayurveda. Daily instructions are broken down by body type and season so you
can customize this cleanse for your body. Fall and spring are particularly ideal cleansing times
as life dies back and reemerges respectively. Harness the power of nature to augment your
own well-being by using this guide to create a seasonally appropriate Ayurvedic cleanse.

Do not plan any other stressful or stimulating activities during your cleanse (approx two
weeks). Start the cleanse so that you finish by the time your menses begins. Do not cleanse
within 4-6 weeks of any other cleansing treatment or as recommended by your medical doctor.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN
To get the most out of this cleanse, there’s a few things we suggest you do first. Take the body
assessment quizzes on joyfulbelly.com – it’s important that you understand your unique
body and its strengths and weaknesses before beginning the cleanse.

There are 14 quizzes in total (all free!), which take 4-10 minutes each. If you’re pressed for time,
you can start with these three quizzes – Dosha Quiz, Diet & Routine Quiz, and Poop Quiz – and
come back to the others later.

Dosha Quiz – If you only take one quiz, this is the one to do! Knowing your Ayurvedic Body
Type – Vata, Pitta, or Kapha – will help you to understand a lot about your body – how you
react to food, what will make you feel good, what will cause you to feel imbalanced, and more.
We suggest you discover your body type before you start your cleanse

TAKE THE DOSHA QUIZ

Diet & Routine Quiz – The Diet Quiz can help you discover signs and symptoms of imbalances
in your body. After taking this quiz, you’ll have a better understanding of which healthy food
choices and recipes are a match for you.

TAKE THE DIET QUIZ

Poop Quiz – Your bowel movements are essential to your health. Believe it not, the type, color,
shape, and consistency of your feces reveal important information about your digestive health
and your body in general. Take the quiz and start deciphering the meaning behind your stool.

TAKE THE POOP QUIZ

If you would like further guidance and support regarding cleansing, Joyful Belly will offer half-
price consultations to anyone seeking to complete this cleanse.

Took the quizzes? Know your body type? Let’s get started!
DAY 1 - REMOVE TOXIC FOOD
What to do:
Sip only hot water throughout the day
Avoid caffeine, sugar, and other drinks
Eat only wholesome, organic, fresh foods that you prepare - nothing processed or take out

Practice for Spring:

Cleanse can be a bit more vigorous in Spring
Light foods, vinegar, beets, beans, and greens
Tender, fresh, young greens add lots of prana in the Spring - sprouts, watercress

Practice for Fall:

Toxins are released by warmth and relaxing in the Fall
1 tsp chyavanprash before meal is also a great choice for Fall cleanse

Hot milk with garlic before bed
Favor root veggies, nuts, animal products, grains
Be sure your house is comfortably warm
Oil the head and feet at night before bed with warm or room temp oil

Modification for Vata:

Vata Kapha types can add fresh grated ginger & lemon to hot water
Avoid raw foods and beans even in Spring
1/4 tsp ashwagandha in hot milk before bed in the Fall

Modification for Pitta:

Use lime instead of lemon
Morning tea with ¼ tsp shatavari for fall or oatmeal with dates & ghee for breakfast as a food
alternative.
No fried or excessively oily foods

Modification for Kapha:

No wheat, dairy, or sugar
In the morning, make a pot of peppermint tea and optionally add ¼ tsp brahmi / gotu
kola in hot water for awakening
Favor spicy foods
Kapha should avoid too much oil / heavy foods in fall - as the darkening days make
them sleepy enough. Instead they should focus on keeping warm.
Enjoy kale and carrot soup with ginger, fennel and lime
DAY 2 - ROUTINE
What to add:

during your cleanse
- Aim to wake with the sun
- Plan to eat your meals at the same time daily
- Avoid snacking
- Turn off electronics by 8pm
- Don’t eat after 8pm
- Lights out by 10pm
Begin keeping a food and poop journal

Practice for Spring:

Modification for Vata:

Stop before you burn out - be mindful of your body’s limits and heed them
Schedule a few early nights

Modification for Pitta:

Get out of your head - allow yourself time for beauty & leisure, let cares melt away
Rinse eyes with rosewater

Modification for Kapha:

It’s ok to skip breakfast and instead have an earlier lunch around 10 or 11 followed by an early dinner
around 5

Kitchari - Mung beans, basmati rice, ghee and spices
- Try our kitchari cleanse kit
- Or use our kitchari recipes - Vata reducing, pitta reducing, and kapha reducing

Practice for Fall:
Enjoy a cup of warm milk (dairy or non) with a pinch of ginger, cardamom and nutmeg before bed
Encourage good elimination by staying warm, relaxing the body and staying hydrated
Consider trying an enema cleanse, especially if you've done one before.

Modification for Vata:

Carrot ginger soup is a simple food that balances Vata
¼-½ tsp haritaki in hot water before bed, or applesauce with ginger and ghee as an evening
snack (or simply cooked apples for sour taste)
Favor root veggies - Carrots, sweet and white potatos are good for elimination

Modification for Pitta:

Triphala ¼-½ tsp in hot water at 8:30pm (at least 1 1/2 hrs after eating) or aloe vera gel. Dosage of
aloe vera gel is dependant upon the supplier.
Adding psyllium seed husk or chia seeds can be a helpful way to bulk up stools

Modification for Kapha:

1T of castor oil, 1/4tsp of powdered ginger every night for three days
- Alternatively, you can add triphala ¼ - ½ tsp to freshly boiled water and drink to promote colon
cleansing
When taking a laxative, stools should be slightly loose, not very loose or watery. If stools are very
loose, cut the castor oil back to ½ T or use triphala only.

What to add:
Add digestive spices like ginger, black pepper and turmeric to your cooking
Eat only until you are full
Find the digestive formula that’s right for you

Favor bitters

Practice for Fall:

Favor easy to digest foods because your system is dry
- Soups and one pot meals, well-cooked foods

Modification for Vata:

Experiment with ½ tsp of hingvastak churna 30 min before meals. Vata benefits most from warmth.

Vata already dry, so replace CCF with fresh ginger tea with lemon in spring
Instead of diuretics, add 1/2 tsp of equal mix of dashamoola, ashwagandha, and vidari for
strength building. As a food alternative in fall, enjoy bone broth or miso.
