1. The following data represents the average concentration of Carbon monoxide in parts per million in the
air for 1987 to 1993.

Year Concentration of Carbon

Monoxide ( ppm)
1987 6.69
1988 6.38
1989 6.34
1990 5.87
1991 5.55
1992 5.18
1993 4.88

a. Treating the year as the x coordinate and the average level of CO as the y coordinate, create a graph
b. Find the slope of this line
c. What is the trend in the data?
d. What will you expect the CO levels to be in the year 2001?

2. A chemist has a 100-gram sample of radioactive material. He records the amount of radioactive material
every week for 6 weeks and obtains the following data:

Week Weight (g)

0 100.0
1 88.3
2 75.9
3 69.4
4 59.1
5 51.8
6 45.5

a. Enter the above data and graph using the exponential function.
b. Estimate the time it would take until 50 grams of material is left.
c. Predict how much radioactive material will be left after 10 weeks.
3. Beers Law: To determine the concentration of an unknown solution of Nickel II Sulfate, a colorimeter
was used. The device used red light from the LED light source to pass through the solution and strike a
photocell. The concentration of the solution will determine the amount of light that is absorbed. From a
set of 5 known Nickel II Sulfate solution values and unknown % absorbance was determined. Graph
the data below using a linear regression line and determine the molarity of the unknown solution.

Sample results:
Trial Concentration Absorbance
(mol/L)
1 0.08 0.100
2 0.16 0.201
3 0.24 0.302
4 0.32 0.403
5 0.40 0.510

a. An unknown value of Nickel II Sulfate was measured by the colorimeter to be 0.36 % absorbance.
What is the Molarity of the unknown? ________
b. An unknown value of Nickel II Sulfate was measured by the colorimeter to be 0.95 % absorbance.
What is the Molarity of the unknown? ________
c. A 0.1 M solution of Nickel II Sulfate would most likely have an absorbance value reading on the
colorimeter of _______%.

4. Gases are made up of molecules that are in constant motion and exert pressure when they collide with
the walls of their container. The velocity and the number of collisions of these molecules are affected
when the temperature of the gas increases or decreases.

Temperature (oC) Pressure (atm) Temperature (K) Constant k ( P/T)

0.0 0.953

19.9 1.010

44.2 1.093

99.7 1.291

a. Convert the above temperatures to Kelvin

b. Graph
c. According to the above data collected, what should happen if the temperature was 0 K?
