Brief description
and Challenges
Goal: “ Transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere for everyone.”
Socio-Cultural
● A lot of Filipinos have cars and other citizens commute.
● Taxi drivers tend to choose their passengers.
● The youth stay out late and use their respective way of transportation going
home.

These are opportunities for Uber because as mentioned in the first bullet, it can
be a threat because they already have cars and some have drivers if they don’t feel
like driving and commute is cheaper. However, in the second bullet, that the taxi
drivers tend to choose their passengers and so the Filipinos are already fed up and
use uber more in order to go places. With the youth staying out late, they feel unsafe
to go home in just a taxi, and so uber provides safety by allowing the customer to
send the gps tracking system of his/her uber to their friends and family. In order to
take advantage of these opportunities is to add more drivers or advertise. With the
threats for Uber, they can make the fare cheaper and an improve quality of service.
● Mobility & employment
○ Creates possibilities for riders, drivers and cities
○ Adds up to the traffic
● Surge pricing
○ Increase of price motivates more drivers to start driving for them due to the fact
that they will have the ability to earn more
○ Controls customer demand
○ Leads to rider dissatisfaction
I C
○ Gives other Transportation Network Companies (TNCs)/drivers
a chance like Grab
OM
Uber should make sure that they do not have too much

drivers where the traffic can get worse than before. They
should also pick drivers who needs the job more. E C
Uber’s business practice on surge pricing may be bad for
some, but it is a way to be fair. But they should be clear to
the riders on how the surcharge is computed to lessen the dissatisfaction
/hatred.
Uber started in the Philippines back in 2014 without any formal
regulations, and as such the House of Representatives insisted that Uber
suspend its activities until the Government could create policies and
regulations regarding this new type of service.

It was deemed unfair that Uber could provide the same service as taxis
without any formal regulation, and as such, Department Order No. 2015-011
was created to amend D.O. 97-1097. This Department Order created a new
classification for Transportation Networking Companies and their drivers, this
classification being called Transportation Network Vehicle Service. (Disini Law
Office, 2016)

With these new rules being laid out, operators (drivers) of Uber will be

Legal
apprehended if they have not yet secured the necessary
franchise or provisional authority from LTFRB.

TEC HN OLOGY ● Customers are wary of downloading apps, and some online
businesses have been hacked for credit card information. Uber
could upgrade its data-base security system to reduce financial or
personal account information risks.
● Incidents have happened wherein customers would receive
receipts from Uber on their email from rides they had never
registered. These hacks called “phantom trips” have happened in
London, New York, in Mexico and many more. The issue here being
that your Uber would be connected to your credit card, when a
customer had complained about this to Uber, they had responded
by requesting her to change her password. Few days later she
received an email from them confirming that she had been
refunded the money from the phantom trips.
● Uber says that when this sort of thing happens, users are refunded
straightaway. It also says it doesn’t store anyone’s credit card
details – this is run through a third party – and that it is impossible
to obtain these from the app. The company reckons the problem is
that some people are using the same log-in details across different
websites.
N a t u r a l
● Uber is suspected to be one of the concerns of carbon dioxide emission.
● Opportunity for this condition: Less sole car ownership leading to use Uber to
carpool.
● Threat for this condition: Abundance of Uber cars leads to congestion and more
emission.
● Advantages:
a. Uber uses cars that came from 2004 and newer ones
that emit less carbon dioxide than the cars that some
people have are more than 11 years old in average
(in US).
b. Uber makes use of promos that concerns the environment
(e.g. Share a ride, plant a tree).
