Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Renewable energy are energy that is collected from renewable

resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such
as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable
energy often provides energy in four important areas: electricity
generation, air and water heating/cooling, transportation, and energy
services. Wind is one of the viable sustainable energy sources that are now
used as a source of electrical energy in each of the nation’s worldwide.
Wind power is the use of air flow through wind turbines to provide
the mechanical power to turn electric generators. Wind power, as an
alternative to burning fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely
distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during
operation, consumes no water, and uses little land. Wind speed also varies
continuously over time at any point in space. Since for wind energy
generation one is less interested in instantaneous wind speeds than
average conditions, it is typical to take a statistical approach, for example
by counting the numbers of hours during which ranges of wind speed
occur.

Small scale wind turbines have been available for several decades
and are in widespread use today, Due in part to increasing awareness of
climate change and the potential of wind turbines to decrease the carbon
emissions associated with electricity generation. Many individuals and
organizations are now considering installing small turbines to supply
electricity to their houses and commercial buildings. Having it on every
household could be a great help for every family, small scale wind turbines
can serve as an alternative source of energy for households.

This project study entitled Power Generation through Kinetic Wind

Spinners: An Innovative Idea for Household aims to provide an alternative
source of electrical energy for every household. By using kinetic wind
spinners as the propellers for the wind turbines, it can be a great advantage
for the wind turbine because it requires no large amount of wind energy for
it to spin the turbine and also the construction design of these kinetic wind
spinners also promotes the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse Recycle), because the
researcher will be using recyclable materials for its construction.

Objectives of the study

The objectives of these project study entitled Power Generation

through Kinetic Wind Spinners: An Innovative Idea for Household are the
following:

1. To produce an electrical energy sustaining the needs of a

household.
Nowadays electricity is now a necessity in every
household, Electricity has many uses in our day to day life. It is
used for lighting rooms, working fans and domestic appliances.
Through the help of power generation by using kinetic wind
spinners, it can be able to provide each of the household’s
necessity.
2. To serve as an alternative for household electrical needs.
The Kinetic Wind Spinners can serve as an alternative
source of energy whenever there is a shortage in energy like
power interruption and black outs.
3. To lessen the amount of Electrical monthly consumption bill.
As we all know the primary source of electrical energy
provides in every household are the Electrical corporations here in
the Philippines. By providing the kinetic wind spinner, every
household could lessen their monthly electrical consumption from
electrical corporations.

Statement of the problem

This project study seeks to answer the following:
1. Is it beneficial to a household if they use this project?
2. By using recyclable materials for the construction of this project how
can you ensure the durability of this kinetic wind spinner?
3. Since this project will be an alternative source of energy, what
percentage of energy will it give for every household?

Scopes and limitations

The proponent of this project study has set the scopes and limitations
that will serve as guide for the people who would use this project.
1. The primary beneficiaries of this project study are the people from
provinces or household where their source of energy is poor.
2. This study is ideal for places where the wind flow is continuous.
3. Since this project serves an alternative source of energy, it cannot
support appliances that requires larger amount of energy.

Significance of the study:

This project will benefit the following:
Students. Not only the proponent will learn but also the students who want
to understand the mechanism of this project study.
Researchers. Researchers can use this project as a guide or reference for
further studies and researches.
Household. Since this project study is intended for every household they
are the ones who will be benefited.
Environment. By using recyclable materials in this project study it
promotes a cleaner environment.
Definition of terms
The following terms presented are defined for better understanding
for the readers.
Carbon Emission. It is the release of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide)
and/or their precursors into the atmosphere over a specified area and
period of time.
Climate change. It is an abnormal variations to the climate, and the effects
of these variations on other parts of the Earth.
Household. A house and its occupants regarded as a unit.
Kinetic Wind Spinners. It refers to the blades that will be used as the
propellers for this project study.
Small wind turbines. Refers to wind turbines rated less than 50 kW which
are generally intended to supply electricity to a household, and which may
or may not be connected to the grid.
