Position: Communications Officer

IST is seeking a tech-savvy, creative, and globally minded communications officer to join our
growing organisation’s team. The candidate should have experience in communications and shall
take part in amplifying women’s and youth voices and power in promoting gender equality across
the globe.

The Institute for Social Transformation (IST) is a non-governmental organization that promotes a
more just and inclusive approach to development in Eastern Africa.
IST’s thematic focus areas are transformative leadership and learning, and transformational
gender relations and economic empowerment. The Institute does training of individuals,
institutions, and communities to enable them to initiate, and sustain change processes. Local
knowledge and experience on the root causes of poverty, gender inequality and poor leadership
play a key role in providing information on actions to be undertaken. Our work is based on the
philosophy of Paulo Freire. The essence of the approach centers on the ability of groups and
individuals to read their reality from the perspective of the root causes of their problems and then
to take control to change their lives for the better.
In pursuit of this objective IST uses the world renowned Training for Transformation methodology
as a key tool to energize a new quality of leadership that is committed to the people, their rights
and the transformation of their conditions.

Our work includes;


 Research and generating knowledge on women’s economic empowerment and what works.
 Strengthening women’s activist leadership, decision making, policy advocacy and
movement building.
 Using diverse feminist knowledge and information to inform and influence institutions,
policies and practices that support gender inequality and violence.
 Restoring women’s agency and voice to speak out against Violence and any form of
injustice

Role and Responsibilities:

You will take the lead in communication including social media management.

You will oversee the development and implementation of the Communication strategy; social
media strategy, and nearly around-the-clock posting of engaging, thoughtful, and powerful content
on our social media channels (currently Facebook, Twitter and YouTube). You will lead content
development for the website, development of quarterly newsletter and participate in resource
mobilization. Your role will include maintaining and strengthening web interactions with partners,
donors, constituents, and the broader public. The candidate shall strengthen engagements with
media and support to think through new strategies and next steps.

The candidate should be able to engage in field travels.

The Candidate:

The ideal candidate is

 Holder of a Degree in Mass Communication or related fields


 Relevant experience
 Fluent in social media and online content creation; comfortable with diverse analytic and
aggregation platforms; has basic graphic design skills.
 Strong writing skills
 Interested in women’s rights, social justice and related issues.
 Collaborative and able to work dynamically and diligently with minimum supervision
 Results-oriented, interesting in learning and recommending new approaches or tech
solutions.
