December 2018
Friend,
With your support in the 2017-2018 election cycle, we are proud to have
accomplished much of what we endeavored to achieve –– as you can see in
the following pages.
Ultimately, we saw voters cast more ballots (8 million) for more independent
candidates (386) than at any time in recent history.
Election results alone are an incomplete indicator of just how much progress
we have made in laying the foundation for future success this cycle.
Sincerely,
3

THE INTELLECTUAL
FOUNDATION
The Unite America Institute serves as the research arm of our movement,
engaging in research and scholarly analysis and covering issues that
affect independents as they vote, run for, and serve in office. Highlights
for the Institute this cycle include publishing four major polling reports,
in addition to a year-long legislative research project.

THE ELECTORAL

We began to level the playing field for independent candidates
by launching two mission-aligned social enterprises—Polestar

candidates, respectively.

THE CANDIDATES Independent candidates led our movement in districts
and states across the country where they contributed
their time and talent to give voters a better choice.

We based our endorsements on three key criteria:
integrity of the leader, alignment with our principles,
and viability as a candidate.

“ The alarmingly effective attacks

divisions should serve as a clarion

divided legislatures.
“ As with any startup challenging two powerful and entrenched incumbents, initial
success will likely come down-market first, where the barriers to entry are lower—in
this case, beginning in state legislatures. And it will undoubtedly take time to scale,
likely several election cycles. But once this movement gains national traction, as it
“
already has in states like Alaska and Maine, there will be no stopping it.

THE TEAM
We grew from a team of one in San Francisco, CA to a team of a
dozen staff in our new Denver, CO HQ—with an extended team of
vendors and operatives across the country. Many left jobs in both
Democratic and Republican politics to help us chart a new path.
