December 2018

Friend,

Thank you for joining us on our journey to reimagine American politics.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly dysfunctional and divisive political

system, we’ve set out to pave a new path for candidates and leaders to run
and serve in office independent of both political parties.

With your support in the 2017-2018 election cycle, we are proud to have
accomplished much of what we endeavored to achieve –– as you can see in
the following pages.

Ultimately, we saw voters cast more ballots (8 million) for more independent
candidates (386) than at any time in recent history.

A dozen independent candidates won their elections in Alaska, Wyoming,

Vermont, and Maine –– where five independents have already begun meeting
together in a new caucus to explore how they can advance common-sense,
common ground solutions to their state’s problems. Indeed, that is the end
goal of this entire initiative: better governance.

Election results alone are an incomplete indicator of just how much progress
we have made in laying the foundation for future success this cycle.

Together, we have established a compelling national brand, built unprecedented

electoral infrastructure for candidates who previously had none, and weaved
together a powerful, national network of elected officials, candidates, campaign
operatives, donors, grassroots leaders, and supporters who are committed to
bridging the partisan divide.

In 2018, we learned that the challenges we face in taking on political tribalism

are even tougher than we imagined. Yet the outcome of the midterm elections
will not fundamentally change the destructive course our political system is
on. So we remain even more committed to the success of Unite America, and
we look forward to working with you to leverage all we’ve built to advance the
most effective strategy in 2019 and beyond.

Sincerely,

Charlie Wheelan Nick Troiano

Founder & Co-Chair Executive Director

Though we fell short of our ultimate objective, the

notion of independent leadership in the state legis-

where independent voters outnumber both Democrats
and Republicans.

A HISTORIC GATHERING OF Unite America hosted the first-ever Unite Summit in
August, bringing together over 250 elected officials,

candidates, thought leaders, and supporters from 35
states across the country. Over the course of the week-
end, participants had the opportunity to hear from
keynote speakers, listen and engage with panels of
experts, and connect with fellow political reformers.

From a panel with six independent elected officials, to

an “Indy Talk” about the relationship between neurosci-
ence and leadership, to a closing keynote that left few
dry eyes in the house, the Summit showed the energy,
ingenuity, and heart at the core of the independent
movement.

THE ELECTORAL
INFRASTRUCTURE
We began to level the playing field for independent candidates
by launching two mission-aligned social enterprises—Polestar
and SwingVote—to offer campaign services and voter data to
candidates, respectively.

In Alaska and Colorado, we produced sophisticated models of

voters most likely to support independent candidates. In Maine, we
facilitated real-time data sharing between independent candidates
up and down the ballot.

THE CANDIDATES Independent candidates led our movement in districts
and states across the country where they contributed
their time and talent to give voters a better choice.

In 2018, Unite America endorsed the first-ever national

slate of statewide candidates for Governor and U.S.
Senate and the first-ever slate of state legislative
candidates in Colorado.

In addition, a community of supporters became monthly contributing

“Founding Members” to provide a sustainable base of financial
support and helped crowdfund over $100,000 for our slate of

THE CONVERSATION
Formerly known as the Centrist Project, we re-introduced ourselves
in 2018 as “Unite America” and established a new brand that
reached millions of people through earned and social media.

Through this awareness, we attracted thousands of otherwise

politically homeless supporters—who, like us, are looking for a way
to engage in politics outside of the two-party system.

We changed the conversation with data-driven reports about

independent voters and candidates, including a groundbreaking
study on how independent legislators have moved the needle in
office.

“ The alarmingly effective attacks
on our democracy that exploit our
divisions should serve as a clarion
call for Democrats, Republicans and
independents to join together in a
common cause to re-unite America. In
2018, electing independent leaders
who can bridge the growing partisan
divide and put country over party is a

good place to start.

“ I have been drawn back into politics

by the pragmatic elegance of Unite
America’s mission. Rather than attempt
to start a third party from scratch, the
group is targeting states where a small
number of elected independents can
create disproportionately influential
governing coalitions in narrowly

divided legislatures.

“ As with any startup challenging two powerful and entrenched incumbents, initial
success will likely come down-market first, where the barriers to entry are lower—in
this case, beginning in state legislatures. And it will undoubtedly take time to scale,
likely several election cycles. But once this movement gains national traction, as it

already has in states like Alaska and Maine, there will be no stopping it.

THE TEAM
We grew from a team of one in San Francisco, CA to a team of a
dozen staff in our new Denver, CO HQ—with an extended team of
vendors and operatives across the country. Many left jobs in both
Democratic and Republican politics to help us chart a new path.

Our Operating Board of 18 civic and business leaders met quarterly to

provide direction, support, and accountability for our work through
an ecosystem of nine different Unite organizations.
