Because a propyl tether supports the NH2 functionality, it can be used for

Bond Elut DEA bears some resemblance to PSA and NH2 in its properties. It
has slightly lower capacity as an anion exchange sorbent (1.0 meq/g), and
a more nonpolar character due to a longer alkyl tether. DEA is somewhat
more polar than C8, but less polar than C2 or CN.
Diol (20H) is typically used for polar extractions from nonpolar solvents.
Diol resembles unbonded silica in its tendency for strong hydrogen bonding.
It also shares silica’s important ability to discriminate between similar
compounds such as structural isomers. Prostaglandins, for example, can be
separated into classes using Diol by slightly varying the solvent polarity. Diol
is a more predictable sorbent than silica for extraction methods requiring
a polar sorbent conditioned with a polar solvent. Diol can also be used for
nonpolar retention by virtue of its hydrocarbon spacer.

FOCUS Polar-Enhanced SPE 15
FOCUS™ Polar-Enhanced SPE
• Unique polar-enhanced SPE phase
• Power Rinse™ delivers cleaner extracts
• Reduced ion suppression
• Simple, universal method
FOCUS features a unique polar-enhanced sorbent technology that delivers outstanding recovery
for polar as well as non-polar analytes. Unlike other polymeric sorbents, FOCUS exhibits hydrogen
bond donor capability that significantly increases the retention of basic analytes. This increased
retention results in cleaner extracts and higher recoveries across a broad spectrum of drugs. The
extraction method is simple and eliminates the complex pH adjustments necessary with ion
Preparation
exchange and mixed mode methods. FOCUS is available in 96-well plate and cartridge formats.

Compare FOCUS to today’s most popular SPE technology
An independent pharmaceutical lab performed a rigorous study to evaluate the performance of FOCUS. The results were then compared to two
popular polymeric SPE products. In the end, FOCUS clearly outperformed the competition with cleaner extracts and better recovery over a broad
spectrum of drugs (below).

C18 EWP - Extra wide pore size (500 Å) allows for better retention of
macromolecules, proteins, and other large molecules typically excluded
from standard 60 Å pores.
ENV - The larger particle size of this pure PSDVB resin makes ENV
useful for particulate-laden samples. In addition, it is useful for applica-
tions requiring extremes of pH.

These extra-clean polypropylene reservoirs contain 2 polyethylene frits preinserted into the tubes. This is
an ideal configuration for simple filtration. For custom sorbent packing, additional frits can be purchased
separately.
Clean 20 µm polyethylene frits are precut to fit into Bond Elut reservoirs for either filtration or custom packing needs.
ASPEC Caps
• Convert Bond Elut 1, 3 and 6 ml cartridges for use in Gilson SPE systems.
These special caps produce a positive pressure seal with the needle in the
Gilson ASPEC™, ASPEC XL and ASPEC XL4 solid phase extraction systems,
and allow the positive pressure applied by the Gilson instruments to
aspirate the sample and solvents through Bond Elut SPE cartridges.
Also, we sell a variety of Bond Elut cartridges with these caps preinstalled,
ready for use. See the Bond Elut Cartridge SPE section.
To select the appropriate adapter, choose the adapter specified for the size
of the lower Bond Elut cartridge. The adapter fits snugly into the top of the
cartridge reservoir. All Bond Elut cartridges and empty SPE cartridges have
a standard Luer tip that is usable with these adapters.

VersaPlate 96-well SPE 47
VersaPlate® Well Plate Tubes
• Available in a variety of sorbents, bed masses, and particle sizes
• Customize your own 96-well plate
• Eliminate needless and costly waste
• Streamline your SPE method development process
Varian can take you to the next generation of increased lab productivity, targeted at improving method development and optimization in a 96-well
plate configuration. Method development in single block well plates can be costly because screening a variety of sorbents or optimizing bed mass can be
accomplished only with expensive, custom-ordered plates, or by wasteful use of standard plates.
Surveys show that on average 30% of the wells of an SPE plate are unused during the method development process.
Preparation
Varian has solved this problem with its innovative VersaPlate system. VersaPlate allows you to:
Sample
- customize your own 96-well plate
- eliminate needless and costly waste
- streamline your SPE method development process
Individual cartridges snap into a 96-well configuration, allowing you to create a multi-sorbent plate quickly and
easily. Multiple sorbents can then be rapidly screened for effectiveness in an assay. Or, different bed masses of the
same sorbent can be evaluated for maximum capacity and minimum elution volume.
For even greater flexibility, the individual VersaPlate tubes are designed to fit our standard Vac Elut SPE vacuum manifold. This allows you to perform
manual extractions with the confidence that you can scale up to high-throughput automation with no additional method modification. And when your
method is optimized, you can purchase preassembled plates for maximum convenience.
For technical information on the available chemistries, refer to the Sorbent Selection Guide on pages 5-11.

A wide variety of disposable syringe-tip filters are available for applications requiring the highest
quality membrane-based devices. Use the following selection guide for selecting the appropriate
syringe filter materials:
Hydrophilic
Nylon — naturally hydrophilic, high protein binding, high mechanical stability, and high dirt loading capacity.
Often used for samples directly injected into HPLC sample loops.
Polypropylene (PP) — hydrophilic, low protein binding, and designed for aqueous and organic solvent based samples.
This filter has low extractables and provides exceptionally low detection levels.
Regenerated Cellulose (RC) — hydrophilic, solvent-resistant membrane. It is a very low protein binder and is ideal
for filtration of proteins, peptides and other biomolecules.
PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) — hydrophilic membrane suitable for most general-purpose filtration applications.
It is a low protein binder and has a broad chemical compatibility.
Hydrophobic
PTFE (Teflon®) — hydrophobic, low protein binding, recommended for HPLC solvent or gas chromatography filtration,
aggressive solutions, and small venting applications. Requires prewetting for aqueous samples
Glass fiber prefilters are recommended when samples have high particulate matter to reduce filter bed clogging.

SPME fiber assemblies can be reused for up to 100 analyses or more, depending on the application and the care they are given. For reuse, simply condition
with solvent or heat before and after every analysis. Each assembly has a color-coded or notched hub indicating the type of coating on the fiber. Choose
the assembly that is appropriate for the holder: manual, or Varian AutoSampler (also used for HPLC applications). First time SPME users must order both
a holder and a fiber assembly.
Recommendations:
For gases and low molecular weight compounds (MW from 30 to 225):
- Carboxen/PDMS fibers
For volatiles (MW from 60 to 275):
- 60 µm PDMS fibers
For semivolatiles (MW from 80 to 300):
- polyacrylate fibers
For nonpolar high molecular weight compounds (MW from 125 to 600):
- 7µ PDMS fibers
For nonpolar semivolatiles (MW from 80 to 500):
- 30 µm PDMS fibers
For alcohols and polar compounds (MW from 40 to 275):
- Carbowax/DVB fibers
For flavors (MW from 40 to 275):
- Carboxen/DVB/PDMS on a StableFlex fiber
For trace levels (MW from 40 to 275):
- Carboxen/DVB/PDMS on a 2 cm StableFlex fiber
SPME Kits offer a convenient assortment of fibers for method development and first-time sample analysis.
