Weather Lesson Plan:

Cue set:
As we start our weather unit, I will ask the students to fill out the K and W part of the KWL chart
with what they already know about weather and what they want to know about weather. I will ask the
students if weather and climate are the same thing? And if not, what makes them different? The
students will then talk to their neighbors before watching a 3-minute video on the differences between
weather and climate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz_CRzcIT-Q- during the video the students
will be asked to take notes and then a class discussion will begin on climate vs weather. The students
will also be aware that during this lesson they will learn how air temperature, moisture, wind speed and
direction, and precipitation make up the weather in a place and time

Best shot and guided practices:

Vocabulary words:

Before our lecture we will be exploring a list of vocabulary words related to weather, these are
key words that will help you through our lesson. Use this website on the projector as a class to learn
about the weather vocabulary words.

Weather tools:

The next topic to discuss will be instruments for gauging weather: I will go to this website and discuss
what the tools are and how they are used.

Exercise:
the students will then be broken up into groups and each group will get a
thermometer, I will explain how to read a thermometer and then each student
will get a weather watcher worksheet to fill out. We will fill the first day out
together and for the rest of the week the student is responsible for filling out
the remaining days when they get into their groups.

Wind speed and direction:

The next topic to explore will be wind speed and direction and how it effects the weather. I will use this
site to demonstrate wind direction, and ask questions as we explore directions.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/whatisweather/aboutweather/winddir.shtml

Then the students will then divide into 5 groups. Each group with a different type of wind force, calm,
gentle, moderate, strong and gale. Students will receive a hand out to fill out before testing their type of
wind. The groups should discuss what they think will happen during the simulation, and then give a
short presentation of what happened after they have explored the site.

Precipitation and water cycles:

The next topic to discuss is precipitation and the water cycles, Watch this video to learn about
precipitation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIiAeL5evN0

Answer any questions the students may have and then move onto this site to further discuss the stages
of the water cycle.

Clouds:

Moving onto clouds we will go to this site http://extension.illinois.edu/kalani/16.cfm as a classroom to

learn about the different types of clouds and how they relate to weather. Then the students will go off
on their own to play a cloud matching game https://scied.ucar.edu/webweather/clouds/cloud-
matching-game.
Severe weather:

Students will learn about types of severe weather including thunderstorms, tornados, lighting, hail,
hurricanes and how to protect themselves and be prepared during severe weather.

As a classroom watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVZExLO0MWA to learn about

how severe weather is different from regular weather. Explain the importance of preparing for severe
weather and how to keep yourself prepared. Have students get into groups to play the interactive
games on this site: Levels 2,3,5,6 and 7. https://www.ready.gov/kids/games/data/dm-
english/index.html

Reporting the weather:

For the last project the children with be partnered up with another student to give a weather report.
Each group will be given a date and location, then they will go to this site

http://www.almanac4kids.com/weather/index.php to research what the weather was like for that day.
They will then give a weather report to the classroom along with visual aids. The students will be shown
this video as an example of the expectations for this assignment

Closure:

At this point the students will be asked to revisit, their KWL charts to review the topics that have been
discussed over the course of the lesson. This is when the students will fill out the L column with what
they have learned from the lesson and answer any final questions that may have not been covered in
the lesson. I would also include a quick talk as to why weather is so important to us and our future
generations, touching on global awareness and climate change.
