Electronic Diagnostics Tools
Electronic Service Tool (EST), a computer based diagnostic service tool.
Has many functions - reading of temperatures, speed, pressures, switch

positions etc.
For Installation work and full diagnostics.
Genuine Perkins Network only (Including some OEM’s and Dealers)
Configuration settings, Histograms, Graphing, Data log, etc
Reprogramming the ECM,(Re-Flashing)
Throttle Configuration, Analogue, PWM, MPTS, Variable Set Speed

Launching & Using EST
When the EST program is started

it will automatically generate a
‘What’s New’ dialog box to give an
introduction to new EST
functionalities. It will then try and
connect to the ECM, if the
connection fails because the
hardware is not connected e.g.
Comms adaptor and ECM
(Powered), then a communications
error will be displayed.
ECM Summary Screen
Contains a
summary of all
information
relating to the
selected ECM,
including the
engine serial
number and
software
information.
Status Screen
The Status function

allows you to monitor
ECM data as it occurs.
E.g. Engine running
speed and Fuel
temperatures.
EST will identify the following fault codes…
Active Diagnostic Codes.

Any Electrical fault that is currently found on the engine
Logged Diagnostic Codes.

Electrical faults that have occurred, and have been repaired on the engine
Logged Event Codes.

Mechanical problems that could cause permanent damage to the engine

ECM Configuration
ECM Configuration allows

you to select a configuration
setting and change its value.
You can select an engine
setting and use the ‘Change’
function to configure the
ECM.
Re-Programming the ECM
Re-Programming (Re Flashing) the ECM
Re-programming the ECM may be needed where an ECM has been replaced or
the Flash File needs to be updated
Re- programming can include…

Flash File - contains fueling/timing maps, cold start/governor strategies, set
speed/mode switching, default values, etc
Configuration File - contains customer specified values for configurable

parameters, idle speed, droop, etc
Flash Files are available from PTMI
1. You need to be ‘online’
2. Click on the PTMI icon
3. Then wait for it to connect
4. Click on ‘New Search’ icon
If you don’t have the flash file number
1. You can search with the Engine
Identification Number
2. Click on the engine displayed
3. Select the Flash File Details link
4. Select the Download option

Reprogramming (Flashing) an ECM PC for a flash file to transfer to
the ECM.

ECM with a configuration file
Load from File – Load an existing
configuration file.
Save to file – Save configuration
Compare – Compare two
configuration files
Download the ECM Configuration File from PTMI
You can download the Latest ECM

configuration file from PTMI in the
same way you download the flash
file.
Select the ECM Config Details link

and you will be taken to the latest
information for your engine. You
can download the file, and using
EST you can transfer it onto the
engine ECM.
Factory Passwords
Factory Passwords
Factory Passwords are
required by EST if the user is
trying to change any
configuration settings that are
restricted by Perkins
Engines. If a password is
required, this screen will
appear and ask the user to
contact Perkins Engines
directly to authorise any
changes in configuration.
