I am writing to express my grave concerns about Mr. Donald Smith who was attending my
psychosexual treatrnent progr:rm. As you kmow, I conducted a comprehensive psychosexual evaluation of
Mr. Smith on April 18 and 25,2002. He subsequently started group psychosexual therapy and attended
three group sessions. In his second and third group session, Mr. Smith did not cooperate with doing his
homework assignments, and in his third session, when his lack of cooperation was addressed, Mr. Smith
informed the group and his therapist that he would no longer be attending therapy at the Arlington
Psychological Center. He further stated that he was "interyiewing" with other psychosexual treatment
programs in Duval County and in south Florida and that he would "decide" what program he wanted to
attend in the future.
IVIr. Smith discussed in detail three reasons that he was seeking another treatment program:
1. Dr. Vallely would not recommend that he not take Medical Recs in
2. Dr. Vallely would not immediately sanction visitations between Mr. Smith and his natural
child;ren.
3. Dr. Vallely's program was too long and Mr. Smith wants out of his Plan of Compliance as
soon as possible so that if he commits another crime in the future. he wilI not be threatened
with civil commitment.
Mr. Smith directly and clearly stated that he is in the process of "shopping" for a therapist and therapy
program that will meet his demands as he outlined them. He was unreceptive to my statements that
his ceasing Medical Recs in Ge (which he has not even started) would not be recommended until he
demonstrated sufficient therapeutic progress in developing self-control. He was also unwilling to
accept the need to only allow contact between he and his children when this was clinically appropriate
HE
to meet his children's needs. Finally, the client claimed
that he could successfully complete other
treatrnent progftIms much faster, citing one progr:tm
that will graduate him ..in 1g months whether
have the skills or not," and that this would allow I
him to avoid threat of civil commihnent if he
commits another crime' He clearly and directly
stated that he wanted to circumvent possible legai
consequences to his continued criminal behavior
in the fufure by graduating as fast as possible from a
psychosexual treaftnent program. k
