Materials for earthing – mechanical and electrical characteristics

Note - Foundation earth electrodes installed under foundation

• Shall be mechanically strong enough to handle harsh situations (eg construction trucks running
over it)

• Exothermic welding with corrosion protection bandage will provide maximum mechanical
protection against abuse, protection against corrosion and the least impedance path for a high
frequency current flow.

E.5.4.3.2 - It should also be remembered that reinforcing steel rods in concrete generate the same
magnitude of galvanic potential as copper conductors in soil. A further problem arises from
electrochemical corrosion due to galvanic currents. Therefore, when steel in concrete is connected
to steel in soil, a driving galvanic voltage of approximately 1 V causes a corrosion current to flow
through the soil and the wet concrete dissolve steel in soil. Earth electrodes in soil should use
copper, copper coated steel or stainless steel conductors where these are connected to
steel in concrete

Conclusion – GI conductor/strip inside concrete – ZINC destroy concrete in most environments

GI conductor/strip in soil will corrode faster in contact with reinforcement steel

Galvanisation and copper coating – Zinc coating in MS act as a sacrificial agent and protect MS by
“scarifying” the coating. Copper coating do not scarifies and is more or less “permanent”.
Galvanisation is simple and cheap, where as copper electroplating is a complicated and difficult
process.

CAPE copper bonded electrodes are high tensile strength MS material above which thin layer of
nickel is plated and then a thick layer of copper (250 microns for vertical electrodes and 70 microns
for horizontal electrodes)
